I, too, bookmarked this thread so that I could come back and read it with the attention it deserves.

First, Claire, thank you for posting this! I just love love LOVE the idea that a wardrobe as a collective entity can be "good enough" even if the individual items are not -- and that that's ok! I have been enjoying my taupe (p)leather moto immensely (*cough* I copied yours *cough*), and the imperfection doesn't bother me a bit, because it's perfect enough for me. At the time, I was experimenting (not investing) in a moto and -- like you -- it's entirely possible I'll be tired of the look by the time it wears out. So it turns out pleather is "perfect (enough)"; in fact, I think of having non-investment items as the way we minimalist modern classicists can maintain a reasonable rate of wardrobe updates as the years go by.

Second, thanks for posting your wardrobe contents! I remember a lot of angst from last winter's discussions of wardrobe size, and the memory has held me back from asking -- so thanks for breaking the ice; I've been curious if I'm a true wardrobe minimalist or just a faker (answer: probably the real deal; mine's probably 25% bigger than yours, but I have items that await purging and an interminable autumn/winter/spring).

Lastly, I've loved your style for a while now, but I'm starting to fall in love with your writing too! Stuck in a corset? Hopping up and down? The visuals leave me in stitches

Hope this (thread) is still in, Claire!:-)
I had not have the time to comment on it when reading it in a lurking mode:-), but bookmarked as a fave to return when got the time I needed comment a bit.

I was LOL (and still do when remember the scene) of your die hard fighting with the pleather corset in the fitting room at Savers. OMG what a hillarious scene, thanx for sharing!!!:-)!!!! AND, I have to tell you it did happen to me also:-), so I could totally relate to your dreading fears having to be hacked out from an ill fitting piece of a clothing with a fire ax!!!! OMG!!!! :-))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

The other hillarious moment I have had when reading about constantly rummaging in your beloved Monty....Is there ever a better caricature of a fashionista than that??? It's my very very deep problem, too:-)). Even now, that I've bought the MaryK recommendet bag organiser...I still constantly rummaging in my bag...Sometimes LOL, I'm fairly afraid that's perhaps closely connected to aging, and sort of beginning of Alzheimers:-). Anyway, nothing helps:-)))).

Now, about the thread itself.

I see you have now a minimalist but well functioning, pleasing and happy wordrobe. Not that it's no place there for more happiness, of course. But that's working well with you, so you have done so well! I'm glad about it.

It's the same case here, by me, too. I finally reached a very pleasing state that I'm feeling no urgent need of any new clothes- as all what I have makes me happy.
I allways was a neutral girl, but now I have some happy colours, too-and that's good!

But it really annoys and buggs me having much more clothes than you, or other minimalists on the forum...still I probably cannot compare 100%, as I have 4 different seasons, and am a full time working girl, so need to have some variety.

I learned a lot here-- say the most about awareness in creating a functional pleasing wardrobe- and so I did quite a lot of shopping last few years on the YLF for achieving that and even if still make mistakes, I hope my decisions are each time better and better.

I am so sad, we do not have thrift shops here, where I live now! When been in college (in a big city) it was my favourte source for dressing unique and happy. So shopping now means more money, but hope that was well worth for my everyday confidence and happiness-it means a lot.

And now I will blend my comment on your thread with Suz's musings about her not willing to wear some of her last year's favourite outfits.(I haven't had the chance to comment there, either:-(( but had keep me thinking).

It's SO TRUE AND MHO- too-that our wardobes will never be finished. Life and fashion continuosly changes, so do our prefferences and needs.
BUT, as all of us know-it's so valuable, to have a good core of basics to start and continue with...

I also have had experiences like Suz(would be glad if She reads here, too:-)) as I also wear my favourites many times a season, then get borred with them.
For ex: in 2010 definitelly had a fall/winter season full of skirts, now I love dresses so much more and my skirt are getting a bit neglected....but that's it.
Una posted a clever quote seen in the window of a thrift store...so true.!
As my favourite and most flaterring cut is the pencil, I hope they will not go out of fashion soon, and will get them out next year moreesse then botherred a bit of my dresses.

As about the ALGO or a more minimalist conception. I was never ever an ALGO person, I think, in fact have been so surpised when came here and seen Angie wearring her multi strand pearls for day(which I liked, but never fit my life or environment). But also funny- I now tend to go more minimal if it's possible, at least for my jewelerry- no more long or Y necklaces for me (have lot of these), only a silver chocker with a pendant. I never was bangle or a statement earing person, but now I only wear some small silver studs-same everyday-not even change for pearlstuds anymore, which I also have worn a lot-...and a white watch. That's all-and am perfectly pleased with that, too.

And, generally-comfort it's now a leading requirement for my wardrobe, too.
I wonder if this has to do with aging?:-)

Oh, sorry-it's been a long post, my own musings, if you like:-)

Thanks, Claire. So that's just 9 more things on your list, really. Still not very long, I think.

As for me, you're too kind---I only really have myself to blame for the overflowing laundry basket :-/ Where I am now, it's not too humid for things to dry on the line overnight; and the few ironed things that do go out (several don't because of being delicate or having some stretch fibre in them) are back the same day. Only the dry-cleaning takes time. Certainly, no woollies go out to get pressed! I'm outta excuses... :-|

Thanks for all of the responses. What fun to read them all at the end of my day.

Rita(Modgirl) I doubt your winter wardrobe is out of balance for your location. If I made a tutorial, you'd see how "not perfect" everything really is. I have a sneaking suspicion that only *theoretical* wardrobe capsules really ALL work perfectly together. And airline uniforms, of course!

MaryK, well I heart you too!

DonnaF, too funny! Navy and jeans aren't cutting it for you? Don't worry, Spring comes around in Feb or March and I'll get my bright blues out again. Promise! I have a hard time wrapping me head around our short winters either. I keep buying coats and have to give them away! Glad I've found a skeptical upgrade twin, lol. :)

Hi Moni (ManidipaM), good to hear from you. Hope you are doing well. I love to read your comments; thank you so much for writing! I hope you didn't hurt yourself trying on those maternity jeggings! Please don't be so hard on yourself for having more clothes than I do. I know you send out your washing (or ironing) and then have to wait for it to come back so that necessitates a few more things. You are right about my imperfect items being "perfect enough" for my life, climate and certainly my budget. For layering Ts and tanks I own 2 white tanks, 1 white cami, 3 black tanks, 1 black cami, one nice black Tshirt and a black woven rayon tank. I just put into hidden storage some inferior (short) T's that have higher necklines than I like (2 black, 2 charcoal and 2 mid-grey). I wore those almost exclusively last winter and I wanted to do better this year.

Suz, it's funny, but I don't *want* any color right now. The neutrals are a rest for my eyes after a very long, hot and bright summer! And yes, I'm sure one could wear these items for months on end. I'm not sure how long it would take me to get bored, but I still feel excited about last winter's purchases, which hardly got worn before it got hot.

Amiable and Freckles, thank you. I'll have to count my things now that I've added the "underwear".

Jen, hey there! Monty has so many good qualities that I overlook his bad ones. I like the way a more structured bad *behaves* but I can look really uptight/boring/mumsy when I carry one. Since I can't stand discomfort with things like my shoes, I can take a bit of inconvenience with my bag. Thanks for caring so much that you started a post for me! I'll head over to check that next. :)

Caro, thank you. I feel content at the moment, but I'd like to find some accessories with more texture and interest to add into the mix. I need to be able to put some work looks together that aren't boring for the one day a week I volunteer.

Rae *quietly stalking*--I love that! I'm so sorry they had to cut that top off you. Here's to some long top love. :)

Lisa, hey I've checked out your blog. Do you feel like you have too many clothes (are you running out of space) or do you just want to start investing in fewer, better items out of principle? I've certainly bought many things that are no longer with me, but lets just call that our fashion education *tuition* shall we? It's learning process for sure. I'm going back to see what you've written on your blog. Thanks for the link.

Shevia, how nice! I'm just plugging (and thrifting) along. I'm trying not to just amass lots of cheap stuff, but go in with a list. I'm also less likely to take a fashion risk just to get a reaction to the cheap and cheerful. I'm in this for the long haul, and eventually I'd like to retain more and cull less at the end of a season.

Sarah, you must think highly of my skills, lol! Thank you though. I'm not worthy!

Ah, Claire - you are a delight. I think your wardrobe is (1) not very large at all, and (2) so thoughtfully constructed. I also think that you have really honed your style, now, so if you decide you want to invest in some higher quality pieces to achieve perfection, I'm sure you would not make any mistakes, and your wear per cost would be quite high.

Claire you are an utter delight as ever. Your list certainly isn't long, but the proof is in the pudding. You manage to put together truly fabulous outfits with it on a regular basis. And I think it is perfectly fine to have imperfect items, that you didn't invest tons of money in, and then move on to another imperfect item when you feel like it. Your basis is strong and you don't need to make the big commitment in money or devotion now or ever really. I just humbly request you continue writing about it!

You have the minimal wardrobe that I aspire to own. I've been working on having one for so long, I finally started to blog about it. I am determined to own a small wardrobe where everything works hard for it's money, despite living in a 4 season climate.

As far as imperfect items go, the great thing about imperfect items is they help you to hone in on what your perfect items are. Take Monty for example, you know you like the print now and that he works for your wardrobe, but it sounds like the style is off. Now you know what to look for in a replacement bag. I learned this lesson the hard way with my handbags and ended up selling quite a collection (over 25 bags) on ebay at one point because they were too small, or the strap was to short etc. I wasted a lot of money.

Going off what Manidipa said in my flea market post, it sounds like you are heading out of the experimenting phase and may be ready to quietly stalk the Perfect versions of your current staples.

Oh! And you are not alone in feeling the long-top love. I am wanting my shirts longer and longer now. More like tunics, even. Especially a silk shirt - yum yum!

Claire, this is wonderful to share your insights! I love a well curated wardrobe so I am mightily impressed by how well this comes together. You are inspiring me to think of silk blouses - I agree with others you ALWAYS look so beautifully put together so your list is further inspiration! I am a bit disheartened to hear of Monty's imperfections... I wonder if this is a challenge for YLFers to think about what types of bags work best...mmmm.... and as for evolving on - its a tough one isnt it but then I think well we must be evolving wonderfully as individuals and continue to be part of the time and place we live in! wonderful and funny reflections! Love to hear more! I am off to start the bag post...

And one question....

With this wardrobe of mostly solid neutrals, is that for about 2 to 3 months' wear, would you say?

And do you (or are you likely) to tire of the solid neutrals?

And if so, how to punch things up? The scarves, to an extent. But you seem to do well with bags, too. What are your other tricks?

You know why I love-love-love your analytical posts, Claire? Two reasons: (1) They always make me smile---well, this one made me giggle hysterically, though I can't imagine why after having had the *same exact experience* with maternity jeggings last fortnight. (2) They always remind me or point me to things I need to be doing in my own closet---in this case, more 'curating' (scalping? scuppering?) and more watching of top lengths to reduce reliance on camisoles.

That said, I have to say what impressed me most about *this* post is the length of your winter wardrobe list---or the lack of it! Yes, I know you said you have a mild, short winter---but I daresay I can claim the same, and I must have AT LEAST thrice the amount, and that's with clearing out the bump-defying bits by armfuls! As RunnerRae said, VERY well curated!

What you said about imperfect pieces... you realize, though, that you're also saying that they're perfect enough for your lifestyle or your style choices, right? So can that be an imperfection? There's nothing wrong with pleather being pleather per se; only if you'd rather have leather! I know I sometimes choose pleather over leather very deliberately for shoes and bags that must battle monsoonal humidity. Yes, the pieces that are nearing the end of their stylish life (pilling etc, unless fixable easily) are a different matter---but that's just about timing an upgrade/exchange rather than imperfection.

Now I want to see this sequinned dress/top/tunic (I tend to call it a tunic if in doubt---dunno why!). And help me follow in your curating footsteps, please, and tell me how many (ballpark?) of those layering Ts and tanks round out your wardrobe? I feel like I'm always short of those, even though I'm dragging in all the summer knits across the seasons... [Related note to self: STOP buying shawls just because it's easier and get on the job of finding sweaters and cardigans that fit body, budget and closet. That's my biggest winter wardrobe bugbear, actually]

You had me laughing out loud at your H&M story. Wonder if anyone thought a fellow would be following you out?

I wanna see more blue on you!!! [End rant.]

I still have a hard time wrapping my mind around how short your winters are, even though my climate is mild year 'round and my hot weather capsule is even smaller than your winter one because I run so cold.

Glad someone else shares my skepticism re upgrades. I, too, fear I would be so over a much worn Something if I were to upgrade to a higher quality. And I can never fully predict which items will become my workhorses.

Suz, when I choose items, I DO ask myself, "If I were going on a trip, would I want to pack this?" so it's funny you should mention that! You had the best travel capsule EVER so I take that comment as an incredible compliment. But I have a ways to go for pack-ability. And I don't think it matters if you stay with or move away from a minimal wardrobe. You have many more and varied occasions to dress for than I do. And HELLO! Winter is your dominant season. Apples or oranges here.

Ack! Real quick, because I'm heading off to volunteer: great thoughts.

Shannon and others, I'm not sure that *perfecting* my moto, snake bag, navy blazer, etc. would make me any happier or solve any problems. If I know me, I'll be over these exact items the minute I find replacements. Reminds me of a favorite $50 sterling silver necklace hubs gave me of large interlocking circles. I wore that necklace with everything for a year or two, until it broke. As soon as I paid a jeweler $30 to repair it, I kind of moved on to other things. I guess I just got tired of it. I'll enjoy my moto (I'm not likely to wear out the pleather anytime soon) and then I'll want something else. Same with the navy blazer. I'm not sure I'll get another one or not, although I do try them on in thrift stores.

Mo, I'm kind of in a place in my head where I've realized I'll never find true perfection, and if I do, it won't be the thing that makes me happy. I can be pretty happy with a little imperfection. I'd be super ticked off if something expensive didn't perform the way I thought it should, but I can cut my pieces some slack, lol! Now for my summer wardrobe, I'll be a bit more spendy and discerning next year since that's my dominant season.

Suz, low-rise pants at least flatter my midsection (by not adding the bulk of button and closure right at my fullest place) so I'll be happy with that. They also help me avoid the "dreaded long butt" syndrome, lol! I'll take a little long torso-ed loveliness in trade.
I worry about what that corset says about my shadow style. I would have worn it under a jacket of course. Thanks for your thoughts and compliments!

Jules, there's a thought.

Thanks TracyLiz. I'm pretty pleased with the pleather moto, despite it's fabrication. It's certainly good enough for our mild temps.

ETA: your entire winter closet is about as big as my one month travel capsule!!

Maybe even smaller and better curated!

And, as you know, I am also a wardrobe minimalist. Or at least I think I am. Or might be. If I ever get my imperfect wardrobe to a place where I can actually SEE it as such!

Your list doesn't sound long at all to me... Like Mo, I have a dozen or more of each category. Since I am losing weight, I have already been faced with editing my closet and I am not looking forward to it at all.

If you have pieces you don't love, like the pleather jacket and you only need it in one color, then I say splurge and make sure the fit is divine. It would make a world of difference to perfect the fit and style of what you do own.

Claire, that Savers story belongs in the YLF hall of fame! You are hilarious. I could just picture you there, struggling with that darn thing....I could picture myself there, too, or someplace similar, trying on a similarly imperfect but notionally fun offering....

Why is it that the wildly impractical items always *sound* like such good ideas in theory when we are trying them on? I think it is our shadow side coming out. IRL even if I bought it, it would probably sit forever in the closet as I would be too embarrassed to wear it.

I LOVE your reflections here. First, your wardrobe is not at ALL long. There is some crossover to your fall and spring seasons, and you are coming to some excellent realizations about your style preferences. I love you in tucked tops. I do understand what you are saying about figure flattering with low rise pants. If pants were still high rise, it would be a no-brainer for the likes of us to tuck, and I still remember those days. It's a bit trickier with lower rise pants, but I do think you can do it and in your recent photos it has been VERY flattering. I agree that the softer top shows more of your shape and hints at femininity that the silhouette otherwise might obscure.

Also, I SO hear you on the length of tops! (As yesterday's post explains!) I'm not even long on top, yet I still need to watch top lengths -- in both directions, actually. (I'm as likely to find ones that are too long as ones that are too short; I can never be sure.)

I think in general proportion is the trickiest thing for me and maybe also for you. Perhaps it is because we do so much thrifting....if you buy all your clothes new each season they will all "go" together proportionately (or are more likely to). We are trying to mix and match and it doesn't always work as well as we might hope.

You always look stunning. Your eye is impeccable. You have tremendous fashion sense. I love your outfits!

I'd say your list is not long at all! Seems in keeping with your mild winter season. I have at least a dozen of everything - skirts, pants, dresses, sweaters. That's long lol.
I am torn these days between purging what seems superfluous and holding on to give one more try at restyling the pieces, since I will be on very restricted shopping next year. Sigh.
I think upgrading the pieces that have issues will make your perfectly imperfect wardrobe that much closer to simply a perfect wardrobe.

I just love reading your posts Claire - they are not only informative and insightful, they are hilarous. I literally could picture you hopping about in the Savers change room banging the walls with your elbows - too funny!

I think your wardrobe sounds pretty darned good. You've done a lot of work figuring out what you enjoy wearing, what works for your weather and your body type and what feels like "you". Also realizing what isn't perfect is useful - the pleather moto, the pilling jacket, etc. These are items that technically work in your wardrobe but the individual piece itself isn't perfect - would this realization prompt you into finding the perfect version of the same piece (i.e. real leather taupe moto, different fabric blazer?)

I am also finding the soft blouses to be working well in my own wardrobe, although only one is silk and the others are a soft blend. But I like how they tuck and untuck equally well and blouse in a non stiff way in the back when tucked. That would be my one issue with my crisp white shirt - I don't like the "pouf" at the back when it's tucked.

I also cannot stand rummaging through a handbag and this is why I stick to a more structure handbag with separate compartments. Would this be something you would consider?
