American Apparel's advertisements, etc really puts me off. But they do basics (eg, tees) extremely well; you can rest easy about shrinkage/pilling/etc.

Thanks for sharing your story. It's one thing to hear it in the abstract, but completely different to see someone living it!

Great story, Malina! I'm like you, I nickel and dime myself with not-quite-perfect items when I'd be better off springing a little more money for just the right thing!

Thanks Anna - I had looked at his stuff in my search. I settled on Alternative Apparel mostly because it is modal, not rayon or viscose, etc. I am terrified of drying and shrinkage, too. And I know I will not dry clean a tee, so fabrication matters.

Not sure where you are looking for your white tee. I would avoid James Perse. Expensive and the quality does not match. The slouchy white tee I'm wearing today is a James Perse. I accidently put it in the dryer and it shrunk considerably in length. I have t-shirts have up better.

Great job! That is a good strategy for the future, too: envisioning a *perfect* item that you can buy later sure helps make it easier to pass on the so-so items. Where I always get stuck is when something is high quality AND a good deal... hard to say no even if I don't need it...

It's good to hear I'm not the only one! I know rationally the idea of quality over quantity, but when I'm out there in the trenches, reason often flies out the window lol! I have to keep relearning this lesson. I hope someday it will stick and I won't have to consciously work through it.

I'm right with you, guilty as charged, Mo. I keep trying to recite "Quality over quantity!" when I shop, and be very strict with myself about not making do with something that I'm not totally happy with. However, it's hard, and I know I still compromise (because absolutely no item of clothing, un-tailored, is going to be a perfect fit on me.)

Great lesson! Thank you for reminding me that I have a red checked sun-dress that I impulse bought the other day (without even trying it on) - and got it home and I was disappointed in the way it looked on me. I hung it in my closet (still with its tags), but I'm going to return it - tomorrow!

Good for you!

When I first spent that sort of amount on a white tee I thought it outrageous but it kept it's shape and lasted for years, through bleaching after getting stained and finally dying it navy blue when it couldn't be dyed any more...

Hope it's all you could wish for!

As many of you saw, I had a strong draw to an item that was 'almost' (the red dress). It would have been perfect except for the cutout shoulders I just couldn't wrap my head around. I also impulse purchased a cute polka dot sundress. It was just half a size too tight - but such a deal! The story of my life.
In the past, I would have 'made do' with both of these. I am happy to report that the polka dots went back yesterday and the red dress will not come home with me either. This, in turn, frees up enough money to spend on a white boyfriend tee that is an actual wardrobe hole and I think will be a workhorse. Light bulb moment here. In my mind, over $30 for a simple white tee is crazy . . . BUT, I was willing to spend more than that for items that weren't quite right. Somehow it was justifiable if it was more stuff. The funniest part is that when my BF complains of my clothing or shopping, it's never how much $$$ I spend but that I have TOO MUCH stuff. Ding ding ding. We have a winner here. Just had to share! (now let's hope this tee is all I dream it will be!)
