I vote pattern mix. If you aren’t up to 2 big & bold patterns, maybe you can start with one of them a subtle pattern, but still interesting.

Or how about this rule? Every new patterned piece has to have a mate, whether that’s something already in your closet or something you buy along with the first thing, and the mates can absolutely be patterned.

Just mix those patterns. Throw a bunch of patterned stuff that you want to wear on the bed and see what falls together that you may like. At least try. The rye may need to adjust. A pattern mixed outfit could be your style signature.
Stripes, checks, dots and animal print can go well with florals, organic or geometric designs. Keep at least some colors consistent but size of prints should vary. You can throw in color blocking and ombré , which may appeal to you more than plains. You might start with black and white prints, or something like that.

I am so inept at prints ( I have exactly 1 print blouse not counting striped Tee) so I wear solids and bring print and patterns with my vast scarf collection. Saves me a whole lot of angst.....
Great when we figure it out and find a happy solution - right LK?

I think I’m not brave enough yet Angie. I don’t have enough confidence to wear two bold patterns like the skirt and blouse you are wearing in your most recent NAS post.

I do like texture in a plain colour and then a pattern.

Barbara Diane - funnily enough I have a load of scarves too and I do pattern mix these, but I only wear them as outdoor pieces.

Cindy & BJ1111- I don’t own anything asymmetrical at the moment so that could be a solution. And items with small interesting details are what I love. A little bit of lace etc.

Krishnidoux - that’s awesome that you figured out a solution. I think I need to be more disciplined!

Good strategy, Fiona. Although why not pattern mix....?

I had the same revelation a while back. Why wasn’t I wearing my scarves? Because they are all wonderful prints. As were almost all my tops. With no coordination between the two. Mostly my tops get worn and only my one almost neutral scarf. I now have a few solid tops to go with my newer printed bottoms (again, no coordination with my scarves). They are navy and black, so occasionally I will go monochromatic with them and a patterned scarf.

It is a big revelation, isn’t it?

It's just not exciting to shop for the plain things, is it? I dont do prints, but I do love me some asymmetry, and I have trouble shopping for symmetrical basics

Londonkiwi, I found myself with the same problem!
On my part, it wasn't so much that I would be Team Pattern necessarily, but it's rather a question of going down a labyrinth of purchase choices that are narrower and narrower given where I live, my size and my style. Eventually, the cutest option respecting my wallet and my priorities often comes down to a printed item. In the store, I always envision wearing it with a specific item, most of the time denim, but I fail to think of the third element in my outfit: scarves are frequently prints, toppers also tend to feature specific details that might fight the print.
Another issue I had not thought about before, but discovered once closet damage was done: my particular complexion/features don't do so well with something too busy near the face. One small print item is ok, but an explosion of psychadelic multicolored flowers is too much.
The solution for me: a few boring but true-and-tested classic basics in neutral solids, more specifically: a couple of good solid scarves in basic colors, black and navy cardis, leather anything (leather does well with prints somehow, maybe because of the juxtaposition of material and design), plain cream or offwhite thin long sleeve tops to which I pay specific attention to the length (too long and it won't work with printed bottoms as it will hide most of it etc.).

I’ll volunteer. Team neutrals all the way.

Have you thought about a color capsule to tie items together. Also patternless need not be plain with structural rather than pattern embellishment. A ruffle, a few pleats or tucks. Eg a tuxedo shirt or a skirt with an asymmetric hem.

Try grouping your orphans by color and match pattern scale.

Am sitting at home scrolling through ASOS as I need some new black or navy trousers and a white/blue/grey or pink blouse or shirt suitable for my NZ business casual work place, and it hasn’t just dawned on me I am so Team Pattern!

I end up with not only orphan skirts but orphan shirts and trousers too.

So my new rule is that if I buy any item of clothing that is patterned I must ensure it as a plain, patternless partner.

Or I employ someone to do the plain items of clothing shopping and I get to look at all the pretty patterns. Any takers?
