The top half is half empty, the backs of the shelves have nothing. It's so strange after years in an RV kitchen LOL</p> <p>Efbgen, I could not have asked for a better craftsman than the guy who built my cabinets. He sat with me &amp; listened to my needs and made suggestions I hadn't thought of, like the drawer under the microwave for baking pans. I was ok with fixed shelves and he made them all movable, he added in some hidden features that I didn't show (there's a hidden drop-down compartment under one of the shelves!), there are a couple of slideout wire baskets for things like Tupperware (and I found an ironing board that folds up and fits in there!), and he left space to run rope lights in the pantry without drilling through each shelf! </p> <p>JAileen &amp; Suntiger, I love that tile so much that it was in the water closet of the RV, from the floor up to about a foot above the sink, all the way around. DH hated installing it (mosaics are extra work) but i loved the tile so much (and we had enough and it was free) that he installed it (probably to keep me from picking something outrageous if he didn't use this tile LOL)</p> <p>Deb, Suz &amp; Eliza, thank you. It was not fun waiting on the kitchen to be finished. Too many microwave meals &amp; take out nights LOL</p> <p>Elle &amp; Jane, I was presented with a few options for countertops and I loved this one so much that I went over budget on the fly without consulting DH. When it was installed, he quickly got over the budget issue because he loved it too :-D</p> <p>Kkards, those pulls were custom made by a craftsman I found on etsy. 3TwentyLeatherworks in California, John was great to work with and the prices were very reasonable. I love that DH let me have exactly what I wanted for the kitchen (I'll have to reciprocate by keeping my nose out of his plans for the art &amp; craft studio addition ;-)</p> <p>Runcarla, you're welcome to come cook in my kitchen or just be a guest anytime! We gave it some "repairs" in a darker color to make it look really old. And that's giraffes in the print hanging on the wall :-)</p> <p>Diana, that claustrophobic feeling is exactly why there are no upper cabinets other than the one holding the range vent hood. I would not even entertain the idea of upper cabinets (we don't need that much storage, after all) because they feel like they're in my way when I'm trying to work on a countertop. I've had u-shaped and classic triangle kitchens and no no no no no not for what we're trying to do out here. Canning takes up a lot of space. Butchering wild game takes lots of space. Making sausage or jerky takes lots of space. Sunshine questioned my house plan when he saw how much was devoted to kitchen. He changed his tune real quick when I told him how easy it would be for us to make venison jerky in that size kitchen LOL. Funny thing is, I've also been using that huge stretch of countertop for some of my physical therapy exercises that require a raised surface that I can lie on face-down.
