Oh so happy to read the happy ending, I have read about putting vapor rub under a dogs nose to mask a bitches scent, I wonder if it could work for other common smells?

Yes, we were lucky. It probably wasn't toxic anyway but I would have been sick of something had happened to her. Now I need to figure out how to stop her from grabbing every little thing that is potentially edible off the ground!

So glad she's OK. Naughty, girl! I was walking a dog for a friend and being ever so attentive but she STILL managed to sniff out a leftover dead rabbit and started gobbling it down. I found myself pulling rabbit fur and whatever other bits were attached out of her mouth...with ZoZo looking miffed that I was taking away her "treat". Sheesh... It happened so fast I was literally watching everything she was doing. And still she managed!

What a naughty cutie-pie! Ah I know the fear well. Glad everything is ok. It's amazing the things these pups can sniff out and grab on their walks. I have swiped rib bones, mini bird carcasses and all sorts of unpleasantries from my yorkie's wee inquisitive jaws.....

You were right to be cautious. I was admiring a wheaten terrier at the vet one time, because my first dog was a wheatie, and then the owner told me this was her second wheatie and the first died as a puppy due to eating a death cap mushroom.

I now have a manic little PBGV hound (a French version of basset with many loud qualities) and he is all kinds of trouble, but we love him anyway,

Oh boy, those are scary. Yes, we have to be vigilant for anything edible that we don't want her to grab. Chicken bones that people toss into bushes on the way back from the convenience store are the most common hazard.

She also finds non-edibles too; she has eaten a paper clip (with no ill effects, it wasn't bent and she gulped it whole) and has found bobby pins and thumb tacks in corners at the office. Finding her chewing sharp things scared me more than the mushroom incident; at least I knew a vet would either advise me to induce vomiting or not, it was just a matter of finding a nearby vet open late since we were downtown without a car.

I am so glad Lucy was OK throughout the whole thing; hopefully it wasn't toxic to begin with; but I told her that she's had a very expensive week, and if this keeps up I'll start renting her out as a truffle pig to earn her keep.

What a sweet, sweet naughty girl. I have two dogs and I was worried about the various fungi that pop up in our yard from time to time. Thankfully, our vet said none of them are poisonous to dogs.

This year we had to remove a huge grapevine from our backyard because, according to the vet, grapes are poisonous to dogs. I'm sure they were disappointed, because they loved eating the grapes. Luckily neither one was harmed by them.

Oh my god, Kari...what a cutie she is! So glad Lucy is fine....these things are so tricky. I remember my German Shepard as a puppy....she loved to put things in her mouth....and if it moved, even better!!! We had a tough time coz we used to live by the woods and there were so many insects, frogs and flying things shed chase around! And yes, put in her mouth before you could stop her. I remember she once had terrible food poisoning and it was horrid for all of us...she was pretty small and was so sick. Thankfully she outgrew this behavior soon!

So, I apologize for dropping the thread of my previous Off Topic conversation. Believe me, I deeply appreciate all the wise and thoughtful advice on trying to remedy my social problems. It's been a pretty stressful time at work, so that has exacerbated the situation a bit - with personal and work stresses, I know I'm feeling the loneliness more intensely.

Anyway, in the middle of this busy week, my naughty hound dog snatched something off the ground while we were walking from work to our bus stop before I even knew there was something edible to grab. She knows "leave it", but if I don't spot something until after she finds it, it's all over - she'll snatch it and gobble it up as quickly as possible. I swiped her mouth and found that it was a partly chewed up mushroom. I got as much of it from her throat as I could, and called our vet (of course, their office was closed, but they have an on-call person) and animal poison control. Both strongly advised taking Lucy to a vet within an hour or so, and inducing vomiting, since toxic mushrooms (especially chewed up ones, since I couldn't find any others) are very hard to quickly weed out from the "safe" ones. For all I knew, it could have been garbage/from someone's discarded lunch; I never realized how much food waste people just chuck into the bushes before I got a totally food-and-scent obsessed beagle/basset.

After a rather expensive week (since she'd already had her annual exam/shots at the vet, and the poison hotline costs money as well), Lucy was fine. The mushroom probably was safe to begin with, and the vet thinks I got most of it with my hands before she could swallow, but it's just better to be on the safe side with a potential toxin.

We've had her for just over one year. Hooray! As much of a stinker as she can be, she is really a sweetheart. So cuddly and loving, and so willing to work hard for food. We have a lot to work on still, but our whole family has come so far in a year with all of the training we've been through.
