I am so, so, SO relieved that I have never had a good fit in Paul Green and that my size is out of stock because it is out of my price range or at least should be. I somehow missed the whole grunge era. Law school time? But I would have loved Doc Martens.

I swear, I have to remind myself multiple times per day that those plaid boots are undoubtedly too narrow for my bunioned fussy feet and that it would be the height of stupidity to consider boots outside my budget that would end up being very uncomfortable. But I still swoon.

Deep breath. I will enjoy vicariously.

This whole conversation is helpful and makes me smile. It's great to hear different views on fashion and style! Thank you Angie, Lisa, and Suz.

I went ahead and ordered the Pikolinos, the red sling backs, and the EF jeans. I'm still on the fence about the red boots but I worry they'd sit in the closet and I really can't make those kinds of choices anymore.

I'm going to stalk the VB pants because I really want them and can only afford them at the NAS price ... but otherwise, I'm done now. I'll be back when the box arrives.

I hear you, Lisa. It's a "style gene" thing. Certain eras/ items just feel inauthentic or wrong on us no matter what. I'm the opposite when it comes to plaid and this type of boot -- as long as the boot is not too clunky it's a slam dunk for me. Like a Chelsea boot (of any description from the most refined to the more substantial.) Whereas a stiletto heel just feels wrong on me, no matter what.

It’s the Doc Marten vibe , and the red , which remove me from the equation . It’s not a look I can wear with any degree of authenticity , and I’m not attracted to it , period . That era in fashion passed me by I had to laugh thinking about this earlier today : I was wearing Donna Karan suede pumps that I practically sold my soul for in grad school while my friends were wearing Docs and Chucks . I was a little old before my time

Suz, the PG plaid boots looked soooo you when you tried them on. You were giddy with them on your feet - good sign! I didn't think you would battle styling them, so good to know you'll just wear them. I do think of red as a neutral because it magically works with every colour! (I'm biased when it comes to red, so there is that....)

Lisa P, can you order two sizes? That would be ideal so that you can assess which fit you prefer.

Lisa, yes -- and I hear others agree with your remarks -- so that's my point -- each of us has our areas of intuitive styling and real confusion! Like I'm often confused about how to wear jewellery as well as you do. I know for you it is so simple you can't even start to explain it! And you look so great! But when I try, it feels unnatural. That must be what you're saying about the boots. And red.

But I figured maybe photos might help a few people here.

You do wear plaid well, though -- remember that brilliant CM coat you owned (maybe still own?) Though I know it is a light coloured neutral for its background, which maybe makes it calmer.

Suz , that was me saying those things , as you know . And I tried to be clear that the boots are so far out of my wheelhouse that those were just my thoughts on how to work with something so statement-like . Clearly , I couldn’t style something like that so organically or intuitively , but Vivian knows that . I’m sorry if I sounded judgy or critical of them - poor attempt at being funny . I apologize .

Angie, I haven't had time to do a full try-on session with the boots yet -- we are back to house-hunting!! -- but I am 100% sure those boots will look brilliant with the wide crops and pretty much anything else, TBH.

I'm curious about the comments here re: You need the right coat, the right this the right that to work with those statement boots. Coats and toppers don't seem like any kind of problem to me with these.

Horses for courses, I guess! Obviously, I am hoping that the red mid coat will come into stock, because that will be beyond fantastic (first Find), but even if it doesn't -- just off the top of my head, here are my own toppers and coats I intend to wear with the plaid boots.

NOT that I am telling anyone else how to feel or what to do. I do understand we're all different and have different styling preferences/ needs.

Lisa P, the EF jeans are a tailored BF style. Fresh to my eye. Suz explained them perfectly - from fab road testing experience!

I haven't seen the SE plaid coat in person, but I like it. SE makes great outerwear. Sometime a size big, but excellent for layering. Value quality at the price. Good.

Suz, what you said about cropped flare makes sense - ESPECIALLY since you wear wide crops sooooooo well. It's become signature. Why bother with cropped flares when you LOVE wide crops! Do the PG boots work well with the wide crops you just got? I think they just might :)

Viv, you are not a big pattern or colour person (although you wear it well!) You like bold shine - but it is SOLID. Hence the silver footwear. You like patterns - but they are NEUTRAL. Pikolinos all the way.

My thoughts, FWIW.

I LOVED the Aquatalia boots. But I don't need them. I have a pair of taupe weather proof booties already that fit that slot. If I didn't, I'd have been seriously tempted. My feet are regular volume with narrow heel and wider forefoot. These were not too snug for me, but Angie noted that some clients found they pinched. YMMV.

The Pilkolinos are fantastic. I was very tempted by them. But I only have so much money to spend and I really wanted the Paul Greens. I have solid coloured boots already and wanted the hit of pattern.

The PG's are NOT weatherproof. I think they will be easy to spray with weatherproofing and the high platform means they will not be subject to easy soaking anyway. But they are not waterproof leather.

The plaid coat? Pass.

The EF boyfriend jeans ARE a BF style in that: they are wider at the hip/ thigh and tapered slightly toward the ankle, and made to be worn cuffed (although I suppose you could also wear them uncuffed -- I haven't tried.)

However, they are a higher-waisted (not slouchy, low crotched) BF jean. I have a high rise and they come up to my navel. Which is not my true waist, but almost. I bought one size lower than my current size. Although, TBH, I'm sort of "between" sizes in that I sometimes do fit my old size (the one I bought in EF) -- just depends on the company and the style.

Anyway, these jeans are NOT snug on my waist at all, and not snug anywhere-- not on my calf, not on my thigh, not on my bum. That's part of why I love them. I am so sick of my skinnies!! And even my slim straights in a size up are a bit snug these days. So this is a huge relief.

I have muscular thighs and a bum. (I think my thighs are about one and a half times as wide as Angie's -- not a joke!!) I have worn the jeans 3 times already. They stretched out a bit, but not to the point of ridiculous bagginess. They are comfy but (to me) streamlined.

I'm convinced this is deeply personal, though. I strongly dislike myself in cropped flares (which look fantastic on LisaP, Angie, you, Viv, and many others.) ADORE the style but strongly dislike on myself. It has to do with my leg shape. I feel that slightly tapered but skimming styles suit me best -- a cigarette or slim BF style is ideal for me. Or a wide crop also works. Anything that skims instead of clings to my thighs.

That's why I was so thrilled with the Transcend boot cuts -- they are the rare exception of a thigh clinging, slightly wider at the bottom jean that actually feels good and flatters.

I wonder if the term “boyfriend “ is a little erroneous here . BF jeans should be loose and hang more from the hip , no? Or at the very least not be fitted at the waist . I was going to order a 6 but maybe I should order an 8?

That SE plaid coat looks interesting ! What does Angie think of it ?

Those red plaid boots are so cool. I saw them IRL, and they are pretty much as pictured, surprisingly subtle for red plaid, and very nice looking. Even though they aren't water-resistant, I imagine they would be just as serviceable as the Pikolinos if you sprayed them. I think the plaid will be forgiving in that regard. I would consider them (more strongly than I already have, LOL) for myself, if I wore red!! Wine, burgundy, eggplant, yes. But true red is not really in my palette. I get it that they might not be "you" enough. They are a big investment for a once-in-a-blue-moon wear. We can admire them on Suz!!

The Pikolinos are fun, too, with the red stripe at the gussett and the subtle little studs. Of course you know I like this style, since I bought it. (And I'm considering keeping the black ones, even though I don't wear true red! Pretty funny, huh?)

And oops! I hadn't even noticed the olive Aquatalias--thank you very much! (Actually I'm not too tempted, because the brand generally doesn't fit me.) Those are really nice looking, though. Very modern classic. You could wear them to work with nice pants or a dress, with jeans on a weekend, just about anywhere. And waterproof.

Did you consider the Sam Edelman plaid coat? I recommended it to Christina on another thread, but I'll warn again here, I haven't seen it in person.

Thanks all.

I'm really wondering if the EF jeans will work, but I think i like them enough to try. The waist issue Janet mentioned does not bode well, and I had the same "round" impression that Lisap mentioned.

I think I'm off the red plaid boots. While I do like some flash, I like it more in a 70s way ... These aren't really naturally me, so I think I would feel too obvious wearing them and probably would let them sit in the closet. I am planning to try the Pikolinos for sure. And also the red slingbacks (they'd look great on you, Sal!). Fingers crossed all my sizes are there in the morning.

I bought the Aquatalias in black and they fit my low volume/narrowish foot perfectly in my typical 8.
LisaP- I can’t even with the Doc Marten type boots either! So out of my wheelhouse at this age. Thirty years ago was a different story...

I do have to say those EF jeans are more fitted in the waist than I expected. The waist is not terribly high, but with the lack of stretch, I wonder how the fit will be for those with a less defined waist. I only tried on a 6 and it fit, but the waist FIT and was not the least bit loose.

Love the look of the sling backs. I want them!!!!!

I like the plaid boots a lot - yes you need the right coat for them. I also like the plaid pants.

Hope some work out.

Hmm. I plan on ordering the EF jeans when I get access tomorrow, but will reserve my enthusiasm for when I try them on. The stock photo is giving them a bit of a "round" vibe, which is worrying me. I love that plaid coat - but forget it if it's scratchy. I can't even with the PG plaid boots - lol - because they are SO far out of my style zone, I wouldn't be caught dead in them. Which makes me laugh because every one on the forum loves them. I don't have the chunky plaid gene in my DNA makeup and I guess it's a good thing I don't live in the NE. I think they are a very specific boot look, and you'd have to make sure you have the right coat, the right scarf, the right jeans, the right bag , the right sweater etc etc etc.

I love the slingbacks, and will check those out for myself too, once I can see the price (having to wait to figure out my own costs is making me nuts!) . The VB pants are no-brainer for you . They will suit you perfectly. The Aquatalia's are a little conserative for my tastes, but if you need a premium quality waterproof boot.....
I'll also be ordering the Pikolinos. Quite like those.

I'm leaning that way, smittie. I like a bit of flash and find it easy to do at the feet (I realized recently that I have 4 pairs of silver shoes).

Very tough decision on the PGs vs Pikolinos.
I think a little bit of flash suits you, so I vote PGs. You like plaid, and the scale is small enough that they wouldn’t feel too conspicuous.

Thanks Angie .... and you make me laugh about the bright coats. You are right of course! I probably need to find a tonal gray plaid....

Trying to decide between chunky boots at this point: the red PGs or the Pikolinos?

Missvee, thanks for steering me back to Suz and Angie's discussion of those Aquatalia boots. It also made me see the red Paul Green's, which I really think I need to try. Although if I go with them I think I will need a coat that works with red...

Christy, thanks for chiming in about those booties. I think I'm going to try them. I'd wear them for work when traveling, and there is a lot of sitting that happens while I'm interviewing people - so they are at least worth a try. I really appreciate your thoughts here.

Laura J, please post which size jeans you keep! I'm ordering a size down (to start).

Janet: I will be happy to wear ANYTHING when it's not 100 degrees! Spending a lot of time just sweating this summer.

Lilac coat is a little scratchy! And BOLD. Warning you. It is not a top pick, and you don't enjoy wearing bold coats, Viv!

Aquatalias are a top pick for a low and regular volume foot. Thumbs down FOR ME - not you.

Rest are top picks.

I wear heels regularly, so keep that in mind, but I’ve found the sling backs to be really comfortable for the heel height. The block heel makes them very easy to walk in. I’ve worn them twice now. Yesterday was a crazy long day - I had them on from 7:30 am until 9:30 pm and while I was ready to take them off, I wasn’t uncomfortable either. Caveat: I drive a desk all day so I’m not exactly on my feet a lot.
