I must add I am not sure that I will do the same next year. I will probably start from the same point, evaluating items that are not being worn and selecting the ‘replace’ set, but will treat them as individual items that work with my overall wardrobe, and not try to force them into monthly outfits. It is fun to do it, but also a lot of work and sometimes limiting and frustrating when I can’t find something that completes the outfit.

I'm digging through your previous posts now, and I think this is a really cool concept! I really love your outfits. It would be cool to see a cohesive looksbooks post, with all of your outfits and WIWs together, if you ever feel like you want to do that and have the time :)

You made me realize I have not visited The Vivienne Files in awhile. I like to look at her Six Scarves, 12 Months series. I think your wardrobe pieces are much cooler.

What a great idea, and it seems like it’s working well for you! Thanks for sharing the details. I always thought I must have just missed how it started, because the first time I saw the posts, I didn’t quite understand what “March outfit” etc actually meant. I eventually caught on, but I’m glad you fully articulated it for us!

It's great to hear about your thought process behind the monthly outfits - that really helps visualise how the individual pieces contribute towards the overall goal (I'm more of a top-down than bottom-up kind of thinker in general).

If I was ahead of schedule like you are, I'd be tempted to throw in some 'wildcards' for the remaining months (still cohesive with the rest of the capsule wardrobe, but pieces that wouldn't be replacing existing items, if that makes sense). Good on you for being more disciplined than that

Love this! The Vivienne Files does this by choosing scarves, and then each month making an outfit around the scarves. I like your version more though! It's definitely more cost effective than buying for the season all in one month. Plus it factors in the monthly weather.

Such fab pieces that make a great capsule even on their own. You are really honing your styling, and it looks creative and interesting. Thanks for sharing your process. I am tracking wears for the first time this year and already it is quite an eye opener. I thought I was this person who loves prints and colours so much, well so far turns out I do love them, just don't wear them much. I seem to be gravitating more to solids and neutrals. I will see if summer will be any different.

Clever idea on so many levels. The outfit a month also provides a focus for shopping for those who enjoy the shopping process or the ‘hunt’ - so overall goal oriented, and probably fiscally more responsible too.

The genius of your system really shines through once the capsule is compiled. Individual outfits aren’t so hard, but the pieces in yours work so well with each other and with what you already have that it’s really great. I’m curious if it feels like a lot of shopping/like you’re always buying stuff or if it feels restrained/if you want to go rogue and buy other things.

Knowing your process is very helpful. Right now am am trying for one in two out to reduce the size of my wardrobe. Since I have identified many pieces that no longer work for my needs, this has been pretty easy. The idea of buying an outfit a month is a great idea if thought and planning are put into it. My biggest problem is that I like what I have better than most stuff I have seen. We will see what fall offerings are like. I hope there are better colors and quality.. I am used to a very long hot summer, so have plenty of that. I am used to a mild winter so will need more wools and things that are warm enough later in the year.

I think I never explained how I come up with my monthly outfits strategy. At the end of last year I started planning my 2021 purchases. I do strict one in and one out policy - I like the size of my wardrobe, numbers of items that I have in each category work for my life and my storage - so I want to keep it the same size. Because I am diligent tracker, I started the process by evaluating the items that I haven’t worn at all in previous year. Some I didn’t wear because I didn’t have the occasion or opportunity, so I ignored those. I concentrated on items that I didn’t wear because of some issue - wrong size, uncomfortable, worn out, lint magnet, what I was thinking color, clear mistake…
At the end, I selected 38 items that I wanted to replace and upgrade this year (2 shirts, 7 sweaters, 6 pants, 2 jeans, 2 skirts, 2 dresses, 3 blazers, 3 outerwear, 7 shoes, 2 handbags, 1 belt, 1 scarf ). This was about 3 items per month. And then I realized that I have enough variety in categories that I can sort of have a full outfit each month. And that the whole yearly set can be treated as one cohesive capsule. My main goal was not to have great stand alone outfits, but to have each item playing well with the rest. Because of that some of the outfits were basic and boring, but I was able to combine them in multiple ways. I was also more concentrated on solids and neutrals because my wardrobe was oversaturated with fun patterns and colors and was becoming dysfunctional. And because of shift to a work from home model, I realized that my casual wardrobe is lacking so I focused more on that. So even though shopping by outfits seems very simple, there were lot of planning, thinking and analyzing involved. And this really helped keeping me focused, on track and on budget. There were also frustrations - for example, for the life of me, I could not find shirts that would work with the outfit and with my wardrobe, and I kept switching arround and moving them to the next month’s outfit. So far I only found one even though I planned for two, and it doesn’t look good for the second. I am also way ahead- it is only June and I have only 10 items left to replace, so I am having a break until September, when I will start with fall shopping.
Here is my collection so far.
