I remember when our Macy’s (or maybe it was Hudson’s then) had a little ice cream/dessert place with a few tables and chairs. It was nice, especially when shopping with a friend, to take a time out and get a snack. I don’t know about Starbucks, but it seems some type of eatery would encourage people to spend more time in the store.

Sorry I posted and ran. Life really happened. No time for personalized responses -sorry-and I need to go to sleep.
A few thoughts-I realize that my dislike of Starbucks was coloring my view. I enjoy the cafe at Nordstrom, it has lovely outdoor seating. And I also like the restaurant. And I hadn’t thought about the advantage of having family hang out there while I shopped.
I might not have thought that way if I hadn’t seen junky stuff next to the nicer departments. Somehow it made me sad to see the junk in the “good” store. I used to find good stuff in the one that really went downhill.Made me just feel like they are so desperate they don’t care how they make money.
That Best of Show clip :).

I don’t hate Macy’s. I make it work for me. Here’s how I do it:
I shop solely online. I wait until they have one of their sales (basically, just wait until the weekend). Then for things that don’t work, I return to their new online orders pickup/returns, where they have dedicated SAs. The unpleasantness is minimized this way.

Putting a Starbucks in Macy's won't solve its many problems. They have have run of the mill merchandise that can be found more easily elsewhere for a cheaper price. There's nothing that sets them apart from other retailers. Macy's is crowded, disorganized, and has substandard customer service. Furthermore, most Macy's are tied to shopping malls, which have been on life support for a while.

Don't all Targets already have Starbucks? They seem to in South Florida. Not sure that is the image direction Macy's needs. Random Starbucks facts - I was in Seattle in the 90s when Starbucks was just starting and it was very exciting to go there. Another random Starbucks fact - the chain opened in Israel and closed a few years later. Israelis are used to an Italian standard for their coffee.

Janet, PREACH, SISTER! I live near enough to Dallas that I could access a good department store if I wanted to, but then I would have to buy diesel for my car for the round trip, plus some lunch. If I'm going to invest that kind of money in a shopping trip, I'm going to freaking SHOP. Which means that I'm going to buy things that I'll never actually wear, and I'm not making that return trip just to return some things, because then I'm going to have to buy diesel for my car for the round trip, plus lunch, and if I'm going to invest that kind of money into a shopping trip then I am going to SHOP. It's a neverending, vicious cycle. So I shop at the good store, or online, and then contribute to the local store's negative cash flow with my returns because it is not MY fault that they only carry a bunch of overpriced mediocre polyester clothes IN TEXAS WHERE POLYESTER IS NOTHING MORE THAN A TORTURE DEVICE FOR ELEVEN MONTHS OUT OF THE YEAR!

And then millenials get the blame for it all. Which works for me as a recovering alcoholic who knows absolutely that nothing is ever my fault (just kidding with some 12-step humor LOL)

I am no big fan of Macy's but if they go under, that leaves our state with next to NOTHING as far as department stores. There is one Nordstrom now that is 1-1/2 hours away from me, but it is so small as to make shopping there not worth the trouble anyway. Aside from that, there is JC Penny, which I haven't been into in years. Boston Store was our state's main department store, and without them, the shopping situation is pretty bleak.

But this whole idea just reminds me how everything goes in cycles. When I was young, EVERY good department store had a restaurant or cafe inside. We always went to the restaurant in Marshall Field's when we went to Chicago; Boston Store in the mall had a restaurant with a balcony that overlooked the mall. Then all the department stores removed all the restaurants and cafes, as did most malls. And now the Nordstrom that was just built has a cafe AND a restaurant (but not enough space to carry much merchandise), and Macy's wants to put in a cafe. Everything old is new again.

Not a Starbucks fan either - but I am a coffee fan!

I do think retail is evolving and some of the traditional stores won’t be able to keep up. The cheaper stores here have lifted their game which is impacting on the middle tier of large format retailers.

And it is a circle - local places don’t offer a good range, so we don’t go there, so they offer less etc. in the past I guess we made do - now people know what else is out there and want more. And in some cases sizes aren’t even available.

The in store cafe here has been a concept for a while with mixed success. People are pretty fussy about their coffee too so it has to be a good machine with a great barista.

I can see a large retailer here is stuggling that I think is like Macy’s. Overtaken by the cheaper places but not exclusive enough.

I snorted a little as I read this because the Macy’s nearest to me is so overcrowded with crap I don’t know where they would put a Starbucks. Ok, in fairness, that’s a little harsh because they have improved a little bit of late, but still, it seems an overstocked, cluttered store with too much uninspiring merchandise.

I get that the concept could work to help retain and attract a few customers, but I agree that it doesn't get to the roots of the retail problems: too much of cheap, uninspiring styles at prices that are not low enough to compete with the discount stores but not substantial enough to indicate true quality or designer exclusivity. Almost a retail no-man’s land. I agree with Cindy.

And meanwhile, down at the other end of the mall, Nordstrom looks more and more bare every time I walk in, and more often than not I’m walking in to make a return of an online order. I feel bad when I do, like I’m contributing to the location’s negative cash flow or something, but it’s not my fault that they don’t carry stuff to my liking in that store.

I think it's a good idea, in theory. So many department stores once had nice little places to grab a nice light lunch. But a Starbucks?

Potentially unpopular opinion here, but I loathe Starbucks. Seriously, I hate Starbucks with a screaming purple passion. Even their milder blends taste bitter and burnt, and it's a bitter burnt taste that even sweetened flavored syrups and whipped cream and caramel sauce and lots of sugar cannot disguise. I would do without coffee before I would drink a Starbucks, and I am a coffee fiend.

I believe that adding a Starbucks, or dedicating space to Amazon order pickup and returns, is ignoring the actual problem. And Rachylou hit the nail on the head: too expensive for mediocre quality.

I'm just waiting on a fresh rash of clickbait posts on how millennials are killing retail. Millennials aren't killing retail, any more than they are killing casual dining establishments like Olive Garden or Red Lobster. Casual dining establishments and retail are committing suicide by sticking their heads in the sand and ignoring the actual problem. The problem is that capitalism is working; the laws of supply and demand are holding constant. People will buy up the supply of things they demand, and they are not picking up what all of these dying businesses are throwing down. Occam's razor: the simplest explanation is usually the correct one. People don't buy things they don't want.

I like the idea too. My Nordstrom store has a small coffee shop/restaurant. I frequently stop by the coffee shop for a coffee/danish. I have also gone to the restaurant a couple of times. I would probably go more frequently to the restaurant but it is expensive.

I do like a department store cafe... but I have to say I don’t see how a Starbucks is gonna do the trick. I guess it might keep me in the store, instead of wandering out to the Starbucks a few doors down, but you know... it doesn’t give Macy’s any cachet. My main problem with all department stores now, besides difficulty in getting out to a mall, is the merchandise is quite expensive for mediocre style and quality. And they’ve all gotten rid of their ‘departments.’ It’s just clothes. TBH, it’s more... entertaining to go to Target for Diet Coke and come away with some dishes and a clever skirt.

Although, to be even more honest... Target is gone downhill too. They’ve just redecorated our Target and it looks like Toys ‘R Us did on IT’S way to ruin. And I’ve never seen such costly pink-unicorns-with-fish-eyes backpacks in my life.

Hmm... I’m not impressed with designer things either anymore. I don’t know. Maybe it’s just me.

I like it. If you get tired and frustrated with shopping, you can rest, have a coffee, and either continue shopping or decide you've had enough. Nice to have choices and a chance to recoup.

Is it because it’s a Starbucks or the idea of having a cafe generally that surprises you (given the small space)?

I think retailers are always looking for ways to make you linger in their store. Our department stores all have cafes (but are still struggling). Even our local hardware store has a cafe, called “the Hardware Cafe” I think it’s worth Department stores giving some retail space over to a cafe to get people to come in and stay in. To entertain the kids. To give hubs something to do when he’s bored.

You’ll find me at the Hardware Cafe when my hubby goes shopping

Interesting. I listen to a fashion business podcast and I know awhile back ago they mentioned Macy’s was trying to come up with various ideas to stay afloat. I believe they mentioned changing up the way the shoe department operates at the time.

I haven’t been inside a Macy’s in forever, but I know a lot of retailers are struggling right now. Barney’s just declared bankruptcy.

A few weeks ago I saw that the nicer of the two Macy's near me (not so nice, it's just that the other is dreadful) is adding a Starbucks. Note, this is not a big store. Sounds kind of desperate to me, although it could bring in some income. Thoughts?
