I really love the versatility of this dress and can see it being very comfortable for travel. I love how you've styled it and how it looks on you in every picture -- it's clearly a blank canvas!

This could be a workhorse for me too. Thanks for sharing it and for the insight into the sizing. I avoid JJill but this seems quite viable.

*Em, are you thinking of Aussie Deborah? Or maybe Texas Debbie? I think
Debra is also blonde, as is Deb. There are a lot of us Debs on the
forum. I'm brunette with some dark reddish/blonde highlights (although the highlights are really just covered up gray, lol!)
*

Being new, I might be confused... I was thinking of a blond lady wearing a lot of black and red lipstick... But since you have blond highlights, same goes for you.

I've been noticing a coworker who's 9 years older than I am who wears a lot of black and recently even had her hair dyed black. It aged her enormously... I'm a brunette and I used to color my hair black in my 20's, but these days I go for lighter shades. Might have to rethink black around my face... My rear end needs it more anyway.;-)

LOL Same here, Debora, but you're blond and the contrast certainly looks striking on you. I kind of started having doubts about black - some days I get the feeling I look like death warmed over... ;-) I might need to lighten up.

The quality... yeah, blessed are those who don't notice and/or care...

Em, thanks for chiming in again. The older I get, the less likely I am to settle for subpar quality. We've had so many discussions about this on the forum and it always resonates. Thanks again!

*Hems are another pet peeve when it comes to cutting corners - never enough fabric anymore to let a hem down.*

Just about everything annoys me... One of the reasons I started reading this blog and forum was hope to find alternative sources of decent clothes and shoes.

I have some good news, though, Debora. For years, I've been noticing that clothes made in Vietnam are of decent quality and fit, and pretty well constructed. Based on my own empirical data, it seems to be true lately that some manufacturing is getting out of good ol' China and moving to even cheaper countries. Evidently, and much to my delight, Vietnam is cheaper and I started seeing more clothes made there.

When I first noticed that, I googled it out of curiosity - just to see if other people are of the same opinion. It turned out that many who go there have custom clothing made at very reasonable prices. That means that even though the cost in Vietnam may be lower than in China (at least for now), they do have an established garment industry and skilled workers, unlike China. As hard as it is (close to impossible), I'm trying to stay as far away from the label "made in China" as possible. At this point I've developed a gag reflex to it... Not that I shop there, but once I walked into St. John as they had some incredible sale and I figured I may find classic item worth the money. Even half of their clothes were made in China! It's true the quality is better than the mainstream junk, but not $1,000 better! Heck, you can't even trust the "made in Italy" label anymore because the Chinese factories and workers invaded even Italy and get to legally place Italian labels on their junk!

Thank you, Angie! xo

Em and Diane, thank you so much for the birthday wishes. One more year for me until the big 6-0!

Em, the new screen name is great and welcome to the forum. I hope we hear more from you. I'm enjoying your comments. :)

Golden, Sarah, Shannon, and Torontogirl - thank you!

Gryffin, you are so right! I don't know why it has to be so hard to find a dress with sleeves these days.

Lyn, the sandals in photo # 1 are the Alfani sandals that Angie posted several years ago. Macy's brings them back every year in different colors, and I always duplicate since they are summer workhorses for me. I found the reptile print ones at the end of last season and snapped them up!

Great find! I love easy knit dresses for summers and travel. This is the perfect balance between flowing (not clinging) and flattering. The slight a line is very slight but just enough to give a carefree chic look.... Love all your stylings!

Thanks, Debora. Well, let's call me Em because that handle was too weird and I didn't expect anybody to use the whole thing.;-)

I changed the original one deliberately because I wasn't planning on posting much, if at all, as I recover from forum addictions... We'll see how that goes... This is the type of forum I'd rather just read for the most part, but you never know what a former addict might do...;-)

Beth Ann, I agree about wearing black in summer! I think both white and black can come off as crisp and cool.

Shevia, I really am probably too old to be climbing up on the tub. One of these days I'll probably have to give it up. Maybe next year...

Marmee and Day Vries, I'm so glad you liked #4. I felt good in it when I wore it for date night last Saturday. Thank you.

M_youlookfabforum, so true about sizing from days gone by. My daughter loves to shop vintage stores and she has found that to be the case. As for the Jill dress, hope you find it on sale and it works for you.

Rabbit, thank you!

Thank you very much for answering my questions, Debora. I appreciate it.

I had the feeling this dress may be XS. J.Jill's site does state that their size S corresponds to 6-8, not 4-6, which is the case with most other stores. I'm also glad to hear A-line doesn't generally work for you, either. I don't really need such a dress right now, but I may consider it, should it go on sale... I recently bought a tunic (S) from J.Jill and it's veeery loose, while I have hard time getting into many other S's these days...

Speaking of sizes (a little off-topic), a few days ago I finally saw what size 12 meant in the 50's! I came across a beautiful dress with a blazer in a vintage shop and I looked at the original tag. The dress was amazing... people used to wear clothes in those days, not junk like today, but that's another off-topic... I love seeing those "handcrafted in the U.S.A" labels. It's like being able to touch the long-gone past and it serves as an anti-shopping vaccine for a few days. The comparison makes me sad.

Anyway, this dress would definitely be a size 4 in most mainstream stores today. It'd be about perfect for you, I think. I've seen people argue that Marilyn Monroe was "fat" because she was wearing 12. Well, that 12 equals 4 now! I'm past size 6 now, almost an 8, and I wouldn't have a prayer getting into this dress!

This dress is simply effortless. I love #4 the most probably b/c it has the most depth. All the looks are strong and the dress is quite versatile. I adore the 3/4 sleeve too because it looks great with or without a jacket. I hope you enjoy this dress to the hilt. What a great find.
