Great idea, especially since I can only hang things in my closet one way. I can see it as a way not only to find ways to wear things I like but never seem to wear but also it would be pretty obvious which items should go. I know I have a few items that look fine and should be wearable but for some reason I just don't like them that much anymore.

I just glanced at the Shop Your Closet thread. Hey, I'm all for shopping my closet before I go out and buy for a season. But shopping my closet only! Oh my.

This is so wise!

"I really feel that I"m at the point where my wardrobe is as big as it needs to be... and in some categories I could probably stand to downsize. This is my way of spotting what is just taking up valuable space in my closet without properly earning it's keep."

Lisa- No, I would not get rid of a summer dress in the dead of winter just because it doesn't get worn for a few months. In fact, in a few weeks my strictly summer dresses will get moved to the back of the dress rack and most of them pretty much be ignored until April.

Kate- Once the item got worn I would take all the clips off until the beginning of the next month. I don't need to do "make up" wearing, I just want to see how long it takes me to get around to wearing it.

Julie-
Yes, you're right. I wouldn't necessarily get rid of something just because it doesn't get worn in three months, but it seems that I would need to analyze why. Do I love it but just didn't get the chance to wear it or do I put off wearing it because I'm not crazy about it?

I'm impressed Kim, this seems like an effective and not too fiddly method. I also love how you are replacing clothes shopping with clothes studying.

It may just be me but I'm not concerned if certain items of my wardrobe are seldom worn, if it fits and I still like it I know I will wear it when the time is right. Mind you it maybe helps that I'm a budget shopper and none of the items cost major £'s.

What a brilliant idea! (and possibly easier than trying to keep a list of how often I wear everything, which is what I'm doing now) What about when you wear an item that has multiple clips on it? Do you take off all the clips, or only one? (and reattach the others later)

QM, great idea. I was thinking of trying the hanger reversed myself. First I need to get the ol' closet better organized. Looking forward to hearing about your results.

I like this idea, but what happens to season based clothing (ie a summer dress gets clipped but not worn, do you toss it because it was not layered for cooler weather or keep it because you aren't in the current season to wear the dress)?

Laura- I'm not planning a closet purge, but I'm going to adopt the one-in, one-out rule of Angie's so I need to be able to wisely identify what needs to go, or recognize when I really don't need another blouse because everything is getting regular wear.

MPJ-- I considered the hanger trick, but decided it wouldn't work as well for me as often I pull many things out of my closet trying to put together outfits. I figured it would be easier to reclip the items that I try but don't end up wearing than to remember to turn the hanger around. Plus, it would just drive me batty having hangers hanging backward.

I stopped by the party store yesterday and picked up a few packages of those little tiny clothes pins from the baby shower aisle. I clipped one to the inside label of everything in my closet except for tanks, cami's, jeans, and special occasion wear. When I wear it, the clip will get put into a little jar on a shelf in my closet. I'm going to try to wear something every day that still has it's clip, but I'm not going to be anal about it. At the end of the month I"ll take a look and see what hasn't been worn. I figure this will be a good way to identify those items that don't get worn, and ask myself why. I will then re-clip everything, adding a second clip to the items that didn't get worn in October. Once an item accumulates a few clips, it needs to be considered for the donation pile. (Obviously keeping the current season in mind....)

I just love doing quirky little experiments like this. I figure it will help me through SYC as well by challenging me to truly wear everything in my closet.
