My favorite outfit is picture 3, the last skirt outfit and I want to copy it! Anyway, you look great throughout and your thoughtful approach and conclusions make a lot of sense. Frankly, almost none of us *need* any new clothes, certainly not me. But it is not about needs for me, it is about creativity and fun. We do need that!

Thank you Joy. The highlight has been working out three new looks with the red leather jacket. Once I worked out that I don’t like it with jeans and boots (all together) I found some combos that I will rewear. As it was a very kind gift that makes me very happy.

Jenni - it has been fun! The jacket is a soft grey. I will do an outfit lab with it. I am a bit annoyed as I spent $200 on it (Verge) thinking it would go with everything. And have barely worn it.

TorontoGirl - thank you. I am going to reduce the black in my closet. I do like some but I can do better with other colours. I am planning to put my budget into a bag, two pairs of shoes and a new work blouse and pants combo as a refresh.

Thanks Angie!! White sneakers indeed:)

Astrid thanks! I agree - it felt bland. And a bit cool in tone for me. I am into sparkly socks this year- I have four pairs now.

Bijou- yes my gear is the best value for money. I do like to have some winter pieces - coats, scarves, boots- but those mid weight pieces are the most useful for me. I can also overbuy for high summer because I love it:)

Thx NemosMum- I did achieve what I wanted. And I also have a bank of about five new combinations that I really liked. It is good to have a couple more go to looks for the rest of winter.

You are soooo thoughtful and logical, Sal. And look fab too. There is nothing like a month's challenge to make you appreciate your wardrobe. Nicely done.

I like the batch of outfits in #2 best - a successful experiment!

White sneakers FTW

You look great. I love the last outfit especially, the sparkly socks are fun! I think the jacket in #4 isn’t bad, it just doesn’t work with the outfit. Maybe over a dress instead? The whole outfit looks a bit bland, compared to the others. It’s because of the colors I think.

I love how analytical you are in your approach to wardrobe management. Your outfits all look great and so very you.

Thanks for this post as I find it very useful. You have definitely given me food for thought. Keeping my wardrobe to predominantly year round clothing makes a lot of sense given the mild Australian / New Zealand climate. In fact, I could probably get away with even less 'cold weather' clothing than you and by buying clothing that can be used year round, there is more variety within seasons. Bags and shoes tend to be the best $ per wear items in my wardrobe other than my exercise gear.

My favorite is your experimental outfit in photo 2 (and of course your sparkly socks!!). I can't pinpoint what it is about the experimental outfit that I like, maybe the pattern mix? The colors are really beautiful on you, too.

Thank you for such a great challenge, Sal! I learned so much from challenging myself, AND from others who played along. It sounds like you accomplished what you set out to do, and learned enough to set your course. I was nodding along with your not NEEDING more variety, yet WANTING to keep things fresh. Good on you for discovering the areas where you need to focus (bags and shoes).

Sal, great challenge and great insights. Your style is so good - "regal relaxed" I'd call it (perfect for your Diana/Sophie connection!). Love these outfits, live how you combine classic and creative. Sounds like you have great direction going forward. I love your distinction between needing to fill holes vs wanting to freshen things up ... That will help you make even wiser decisions going forward. Re the black top and jeans ... I don't think I would associate that with your style tbh ... It's a bit dark and predictable whereas you always have more energy in your looks. What is you replaced the black with one of your lighter neutrals, like camel? It would still give you that easy fallback, without being so heavy?
I dropped the ball completely on joining in but have enjoyed following everyone's journey, so thanks for starting this!

Sal this has just been the best challenge. You’ve inspired heaps of us! You don’t really have a very big wardrobe, mine is quite a lot larger still but at least going down in numbers slightly over time!- and you have helped me there.
I don’t think the black is boring but I suppose it is predictable which may be what bores you. I like the rugby outfit, so Kiwi! And I like the cream jacket including the fit.

I thought outfits 1and8 looked fine, but, I love scarves and blue denim with a blacktop is a cool look and classic, but may not be exciting. You look fab in those jeans in #1. As a member of the sparkly socks club, I totally approve.
The pattern mixing in #6 tickles my toes, but my favorite outfit is #7 (photo 3) of #11 (photo 5) You look amazing in the red jacket.

Here are the last week of outfits.

Photo One - work/work/rugby (outfit 2 is better than it looked)

Photo Two - casual weekend x 2, work (outfit 2 was an experiment)

Photo Three - work, including sparkly socks

Photo Four - work - not sure about this jacket, either fit or colour? It is too drab?

Photo Five - work, more sparkly socks.

I like them all bar outfit one, and outfit 8 (on photo 4).

Let me know your thoughts.

Hi All

This has got very long. Feel free to only read part of it or skip to the first comment for the pics!!

My challenge was to wear all my winter clothes in July.
I started one day early on 30/6 and had two days I just did not count as
I lived in gear and did gardening. Excluded were
occasionwear and summer clothes.

Background

I divide my closet into five sections and have about 126
items across footwear, clothes, gear and bags,

All year clothes (about 42 pieces) eg jeans, tee shirts,
sneakers, blouses, jackets

True Winter (about 8) eg boots and wool coats

True Summer (30) eg sundresses and shorts and very
light jackets

Occasionwear (8)

Bags (8)

Gear (29)

This is everything outside a few random gardening and
painting items and things like leggings and camis that are not worn alone. Our climate is mild so lots of clothes can be
worn all year and the divisions are pretty arbitrary.

Did I do it:

Between 30/6-31/7 I have worn 54
items of clothing and shoes, so I stretched a bit further into the transitional
wardrobe than I predicted. I did not
wear two of my short sleeve tops but aside from that I wore all my winter items and all year basics. Obviously some of the transitional stuff is
more winter oriented (boots) and some is more summer but can be worn in winter
(tee shirt). July is mid winter but this
year has been relatively mild. I have
not dipped into my occasion wear capsule because I have not had any need to do
so.

Most worn - were my white sneakers (9 wears), navy boots (6 wears),

I have edited out four pieces as well. Two pairs of shoes and two boring black tops (see finds for shoes). My three day bags were worn 6-7 times each. My most worn clothes were only 4-5 times in the month (two pairs of pants and my coats and puffer).

I did include the tangerine dress (see find) in my original list (and am wearing it tonight) but have since decided it does fit in the occasionwear capsule. I have a couple of nights out approaching so will share some wiw.

Learnings

Focus
on the bags and shoes – these get worn the most.

I
like black but in winter when worn with blue denim I find it drab on me. So I am looking at ways to keep a lean mean
closet without relying as heavily on black.

I do
not NEED any more clothes. Lets not kid
myself and say I have holes or gaps. I
have lots of options and when three times a month is “heavy wear” then I do not
need more variety. Of course I WANT to
update and refresh and add new fun things to my closet.

I will load pics from the week onto a new comment/post as this has got too long!!

Thanks for reading.
