I was able to successfully talk budget concerns with my fitter at Intimacy in Boston, but I mentioned it in my initial spiel about what I was looking for, which may have made a difference.

I'm tickled Carissa! I'm glad I have a cheerleader

One thing I should mention is that the ladies at Intimacy are VERY persuasive. I'm sure the job is partly or fully commission-based. There are no "what is your budget like" questions or "how many bras are you looking for" questions. I don't think my fitter was happy when I only walked away with 2 (and neither were the $207 bra), but oh well. That was all I could afford.

Maya, I'm glad to hear that you had such a great experience. I am definitely going to look into coming into NYC and getting into Intimacy once my finances allow for it. I went to one of the Intimacy network stores here in CT earlier in the fall and had an awful experience - my bra fitter didn't seem to know what she was doing and they had a very limited selection and nothing fit quite right (probably because she had me in the wrong size to begin with!). I walked out with nothing to show for an hour drive out of my way.

Thanks for the info!

I don't know if all strap slippage is caused by too big a back band. They told me they do the band alteration first, and if the straps still slip, only then will they go in with a strap alteration. But if they do both at once, the straps might be TOO inset.

My sense is that I will still need the straps altered, since I have a bra that has inset straps and they still fall off even on the smallest hook (which is pretty close to being a size 30). But we'll see.

I hope I have done you proud, Carissa.

Maya, that sounds like a really good experience. I'm happy for you.

So if my shoulder straps are sliding off, does that definitely mean my band size is too big? I noticed recently that my shoulder straps are slipping off my shoulders ALL THE TIME, when they didn't used to do that. I was thinking of posting to ask about this.

Good for you Maya.

Rib cages come in all size, even relative to body size. I have fit a woman in a size 30 back band, and she had hips & shoulders that were close to a size 10. Her cups were HH.

I'm a 34 band now, I was a 34 band 30 lbs. lighter.

I'm glad you had a good experience and tried on some lusciouis under pinnings. Always a good investment.

Yes our Nordie's did the tape measure too. And yes Maya you are SO right. And believe it or not, there's a chance I'll be there. I'm scheduled to be in White Plains NY last week of April. I am sorely tempted afterwards to get to the city from there (I hear it's not too far and I'm hoping there are trains) to spend the weekend.

Actually Kari + Sihaya, you should be coming to New York primarily to see me, followed by bra fittings :p Get your priorities straight!

This might not be true of the flagship Nordstrom, but the one here did not have anything below a 32 and they do the old fashioned measuring tape method, which Intimacy is very critical of (by measurements alone, I should be a 32D).

So I honestly wasn't too impressed. My Nordstrom seems to be less impressive than most in general though.

OK, Kari and I will have to plan a trip to NYC together and get ourselves to Initimacy I have had several fittings at Nordstrom but my straps keep falling off. So maybe I need to ask them to have me try a narrower band. Maya - I'm like you, narrow band, bigger cup size relative to each other. Thanks for sharing this info. Very valuable.

New bras are top of my shopping list at the moment too. I bought two new sets yesterday and are now on the hunt for some as my husband says "boring stuff" - plain black, white and nude.

If you want to read up on bra fitting, I recommend the figleaves site - http://www.figleaves.com/uk/fi.....sp?cat=234

Also, I remember reading that cup size is dependent on band size, so a 36B will have greater capacity than a 30B, so if you go down a band size it does make sense that you go up a cup size. In NZ bra bands are sized in 8, 10, 12, 14 etc which roughly matches up to clothing size.

Maya - I am pretty sure that Bravissimo do international shipping and I think that they would give you good fitting advice via email or over the phone.

Maya, the same thing happened to me at Nordstrom last year - they took me down a band size and up a cup size. I wonder if this is a common bra fitting adjustment. It worked for me pretty well, since I too have strap-falling issues, although I have to say that the strategy worked better for a Natori bra that was a little more stretchy than another t-shirt bra that had pretty stiff construction.

Very interesting, Maya! I'm so glad you got some nice new bras and found a good source for them.

I'm also not surprised that you're really a 29 back- I never really believed that your "real" size was a 32. I think we've got a similar frame (in terms of ribcage, at least) and I'm a 28 or 30, depending on the style/brand.

You should consider ordering bras from Bravissimo in the future- they'll definitely have the sizes you need in stock. I'm not sure how much international shipping would be, but they do have good sales several times a year, and some very reasonably-priced brands. In fact, I'm heading there in a few minutes to spend some of my xmas money!

Maya, I'm *so* glad that you visited Intimacy and had a positive experience - and extremely envious that you live so nearby to one! If I'm ever in NYC that's a high priority on my list.
(I still kick myself for not making an appointment at Bravissimo the last time that I was in London!)

I am not surprised to learn that you were advised to wear a smaller band size - you have a much smaller frame than I do, and I usually wear a 32 band size, and a 30 in some brands. I assumed that I'd feel suffocated in such a small band size, but really after the first week of wearing the bra, the band "gives" a little but still provides great support for a long time. If I buy a bra with a 34 band size, for example, the band stretches out too far to be supportive within a few months.

I've never heard of Passionata, but I'll have to keep an eye out! (Is there a style in that brand that worked out best for you?)

Marianna, you just described the opposite body type from me I have really huge breasts for my size, so trust me, I know a thing or two about being abnormal. Virtually no one makes a 30 band size, let alone a 30G. But these ladies have truly seen the full gamut of sizes. There is really nothing that is going to shock them. Unfortunately most mainstream retailers seem to make a connection between band size and cup size, which makes absolutely no sense. At a 32, the biggest option I was generally offered was a B (assuming the store even carries a 32, which is quite the assumption). At a 30, I think I'm supposed to be like an AAAAA :p

They stock brands that I have never even heard of, all of which are European, so the quality and construction is better (American bras suck...sorry to be blunt, but they do). Their sizes go up to a 52 band and range from from an AA-J cup. They will get you sorted. Even if you find out you are the same size you think you are, they'll find options that will flatter you and the quality will be amazing.

Since you are in the process of losing weight, you should probably get fitted whenever you drop a size.

Marianna, seriously, do it!! I cannot tell you how valuable it is to go through this process, terrifying as it may sound. But getting a bra fitting is good for not just your style quotient, but your body as well. Having the right support level is so crucial, no matter how much or how little you have under your shirt!! And trust me, these ladies will have seen it all, body wise, so you have nothing to worry about! My mom made me start getting professional bra fittings at high-end bra stores since I was big enough to need an undergarment, and I thank her every day for her foresight. It's saved me no end of hastles and much backpain!

Maya, so glad you had such a great experience.

There is an Intamacy in Chicago so I should probably take advantage of that one of these days. I'm sort of scared that they'll tell me I have some absolutely abnormal size that doesn't exist because I have really small breasts for my weight. I'm currently wearing a 38B but the cups are always too big. 38A hardly exists, and 40A probably doesn't exist at all! Also, standing topless in front of a stranger is VERY scary for me... I'm not sure I could do it! You give me courage, though.

The fitting is free, Marianna. I firmly believe all women should get a proper fitting done. At the very worst, your size will be confirmed. But in all likelihood, you'll probably be surprised. There is no way in the world I would have ever guessed I'm a 30, let alone a 29. I asked my fitter how many of her clients are wrong about their size, and she said upwards of 80%!

It's not just about getting the right size either. Plenty of the bras I tried fit well, but they were not flattering on me at all. They will help find styles that enhance whatever you have, whether you have a lot or not.

You can make an appointment on their website. The gals who fitted me and my mom were great. Very helpful and encouraging. I was a little intimidated (who wouldn't be intimidated by standing there topless in front of a total stranger...), but they put me at ease.

Very interesting. Thanks for sharing, Maya. I've never been fitted nor really considered being fitted because I have barely anything to fit, but one day it would probably be smart to get a bra fitting. The fitting itself is free, right? You just pay for the bras?

Today was the much anticipated mother-daughter day out, inclusive of tea and bra fittings at Intimacy. I am SO impressed and will be going there from now on for all my bra needs.

Despite being professionally fitted, both mom and I were in the wrong size. Mom was wearing a 36 and needed a 34. I thought I was a 32 and actually ended up being a 30. In fact they thought I might need to go even smaller, to a 29, but 32 is the smallest size they had on hand so I'm having them altered (for free!) to a 30 first. If they are still too big, they'll take them down to a 29. So my "true" size is actually a 30G rather than a 32F. They said 30G's do exist but they only opened 2 weeks ago so they don't have the full range of sizes and stock available yet. They also told me that the reason my straps kept falling off was because the band was too big. When they take in the band, the straps will come closer together.

They brought me back at least 20 different bras to try and made a "good" and "bad" pile. I almost fainted when I saw some of the prices (upwards of $150), but I didn't want to leave anything off the table--after all, I can always look them up online and keep them in mind for when I *do* have the $$$ one day. The fit and quality of these super high end bras were utterly amazing. I used to think Chantelle was at the higher end of the spectrum (at $70-$100), but it was one of their less expensive brands. Lucky for me one of my best fitting bras was only $58. The brand is Passionata and is produced by Chantelle, in case anyone is wondering.

In the end I only bought 2 bras because I might drop a few pounds now that I'm more active again, and I also went off the pill so there is a good chance I'll be going down a cup size.

The alterations were all free, and they offer free alterations for the life of the bra. So if the cups still fit after a year but the band is loose on the smallest hook, or the straps are loose, they can later them back down. According to them, the bras they carry should last three years when laundered properly (using a gentle/organic detergent and a handwash setting), so the cost-to-wear ratio is virtually nothing. If I had $200, I would have bought an amazing Lise Charmel bra, which was hands-down the best fit on me. It would be money well spent. But, it is what it is. I'm happy with the styles I got. Unfortunately the seamstress is on vacation until January, so I probably will have to wear my ill-fitting bras for a couple of weeks more...but this is the first time I ever felt excited about getting bras. Go figure.

Anyway, I just wanted to write this up in case the information might help anyone here. They're opening new stores all the time so if there isn't one in your city now, it's worth checking periodically.
