Hi there I had a situation like recently my stylist was out for 2 weeks and I wanted an appt, strangely they didn't offer my someone else the day I wanted to schedule.

I went to Groupon and got a cut the next day

OMG I remember a couple of years ago I had this whole long post about having somebody else in the salon do my hair when my guy was out, and she did a better job and I just about had a heart attack about making the change. Turns out I just told him and it was fine. 30 seconds of awkwardness and a whole lifetime of better haircuts ahead of me.

Honestly, they really do expect this kind of thing and take it in stride. I know my saga was way harder on me than it was on my former hairstylist.

... And MY hairstylist recently broke her arm.

Well, when they are not present, we just have to try some others.

Totally acceptable!
This story does make me appreciate my own stylist, who prebooks his regular clients a year in advance to avoid this very issue. Every November I get a call from his assistant confirming what services, frequency and schedule I'd like, and a few weeks later, I get a text with my appointments for the coming year.
Obviously, appointments have to be rescheduled from time to time, but I avoid the whole oh-my-goodness-my-hair-needs-attention-NOW syndrome! A few times over the years this has led to his booking me with someone else in the salon when our schedules wouldn't mesh. So far, I'm always glad to get back to him!

No, it isn't bad etiquette. You need a hair cut. She isn't available. It's a paid service. You don't 'owe' it to your stylist to wait until it's convenient for her to cut your hair, and she doesn't 'owe' you to rearrange her schedule to your convenience.

Think of it like this - if you needed the oil changed on your car and the tire pressure checked, etc, but the guy you normally go to is on vacation, and you're about to take a long road trip.... you wouldn't wait, right?

If you like the sub stylist better, stick with her. It's a paid service industry.

I can't imagine this will be a problem. In fact, it can be a good thing. When my old stylist suddenly passed away a few years ago, I had confidence switching to another person in the same salon since I had used her before as an emergency sub, and had liked her very much.

Yes, go see another stylist. My stylist is very happy if I book in with one of her colleagues when she is away on holiday because it means that she does not have to try to catch up a whole week's worth of work when she gets back. She once lamented at how guilty some of her clients make her feel because they don't want her to have a break.

This is the strangest thing. I don't see other stylists because I would feel like I am "cheating." It makes no sense whatsoever, but I have had a hard time getting past it.

In your case, most definitely, I would see another stylist. Selecting the same salon was considerate. You were upfront and honest. Good for you.

What Emily said. It happens all the time. Stylists expect this will happen at some point. I wouldn't fret it.

I imagine that both stylists are happy to keep your business in the salon rather than causing you to visit a competitor's shop.

My hairstylist is out of town, I have an event before she returns and chose another stylist in the same salon. Is this bad etiquette? I love my stylist but I have to do this and will return to her for my next cut. I informed the stylist cutting my hair. I will feel really awkward if this girl does a better job
