Wow, that's a great idea Queen Mum! I've probably had to return half the pairs I've bought online, so I've limited myself to sites with free returns, unless I've tried them on before

That is so irritating.
Here's what I do sometimes. I look to see what length they say that the pictured shoe is, and then I enlarge the picture on my computer (using the ctrl and + key) to the correct size. Then I can pull out my ruler and measure the heel myself. I'ts probably not 100% correct but it's better than nothing.

Im sorry you've dealt with this too....I had ordered a darling pair of boots from Herbergers that said they were 3 inches and were 4 1/4 ! Also my new pair of light tan suede lace-up booties were supposed to be 3 inches and are 3 3/4! I love them SO much Im going to try and keep them...those were just my latest 2...I wrote reviews warning people of the differences...Rae, Great idea! Sure wish they would...is there any way your boot can be nipped in a bit? Worth checking into...A, didnt know that! thanks...

I think as a rule they measure to the mid point. I read that somewhere.

I'm feeling your pain this morning, as I put on my brown boots (pre-YLF) and realized, to my horror, that the calf is HUGE on me. Surfing though some sites, I keep saying to myself, "Wow, that footbed sure is arched a LOT for a 2.5 inch heel." Calf measurements seem just as bad, based on reviews I've read. Someone needs to standardize these measurements, or at least draw up a chart that shows exactly what part of the boot they're measuring!

BM, I am with you on thisone! I have ordered two pairs - one had description of 2" and another of 2 1/2" and IRL they both were 2 3/4"!

I need to mainly shop online for those items and while I expect to do a lot of returns, I get *so* irritated with inaccurate descriptions of heel height! Instead of measuring from the back of the heel at the highest point, most were measured from the side or lowest point of the heel.... Ive needed to return the last 3 pair of boots (and pay shipping costs) that I NEVER wouldve ordered in the first place had the descriptions been correct! AAGGH! OK, rant over!
