Your top is lovely and I'm glad they finally had it in your size. I love your question about what items we have that we would want to use as models for our style? I have been using some pictures I pinned from Pinterest as inspiration. My problem is there are multiple pictures so i took my Style Statement, which is "Genuine Composed" and and my style adjectives, and I pinned an assortment of looks that I felt embodied my ideals of the concept. Below are a dress and a blouse that I feel are very representative with the one exception that there is a lack of color, and I definitely enjoy color.

I own both of these items and love them. I need to say that the knee length sheath dress is definitely one of my favorite and probably best looks and I haven't yet shown a pic of it.. The zipper on this one adds a fun and playful touch which I like in my clothes because I think it takes away some seriousness and creates a more approachable look. if I had to pick only one item, it would be the knee length sheath dress. I am constantly trying to imitate this type of look using all variations of pencil skirt, but I like the dress best.

That boat neckline is so nice on you -- I can see why you sought out this top, and I'm glad you were successful in finding it!

As for that white BR top, couldn't you have the sleeves altered a bit to rein in the excessive volume?

The concept of using particular items as models or guideposts for personal style is an interesting one. There are a couple of pieces I have that do a particularly good job of representing my style, but I've never made a conscious decision to choose other pieces in the same style vein as those. I think it just happens because I've always got an eye out for certain styles, colors and vibes. Interestingly though, the two pieces that came to mind first are both jackets (blue IRO leather moto and black BCBG long jacket), and both were purchased in Boston!

Thanks for replies and some of your own style stories.
Angie, I used French in a loosely connected way, re: simple, neutral and versatile- also something about the more precise fit and maybe slightly ladylike vibe--a way to imagine or visualize certain items. Maybe more than 6 degrees of separation in the
concepts, though! I like your sweater and wish it came in more colors!

I'm not sure I see this top as French, but I love it on you, and am glad that you got it. It's similar to a top I just bought at AT which has a '70s vibe (zoom in close at the border on the boat neck):

so glad that you find your "it" item. sometimes it pays to stalk...
for years i thought that the perfect white shirt was the item that would define my style....so i bought them, but never seemed to find the one that i actually wanted to wear...then this year, i've actually found 3 that i actually wear. the secret sauce was that they are oversized and longer, masculine yet not boxy.

Yes, what ever happened to darts and shaping seams?
Your question had me wondering. I suppose my style model is a neutral sheath dress. I have an old Calvin Klein sleeveless in black. It may even have darts. The slim fit makes styling it different ways easy. I especially like to use different jackets, but also have a black lace pullover top which works well for dressing it up. The only downside is that this piece is polyester ( although matte, not shiny). I wish that it were silk. Even then, I always feel good wearing this dress.

This is stunning on you! I can see why you would say French. French people are known for their simple, impeccable taste. This actually has the feel of Audrey Hepburn to me, with the tailored neckline and clean front.

I am a vintage and thrift shopper, but I recently found a beautiful light brown and white polkadot dress. It is so perfect for me and embodies the forties style I love to emulate.

Have you heard of Saint James?
They have very nice (v. High quality!!) wool sweaters with nicely cut shoulder.

Funny, I have a similar holy grail item: pullover woven top, 3/4 length sleeves, but mine is much less fitted--loose, short, & slightly swingy, like a child's smock. I realized that a certain top I bought years ago in a thrift shop--raspberry linen, with little gathered pockets in the front--has always fit, always flattered, always made me happy and comfortable. So lately I've been looking for more tops with that easy, simple shape, and thinking I might just lay the piece down on paper and trace a pattern to sew in different fabrics. Honestly, I could probably live most of the time in a pair of slim, comfortable pants and a top like that. There are more available than there used to be, since Madmen made the sixties-retro look so popular (I bought one gorgeous teal Missoni chevron knit with fat covered buttons down the back) but the new version often narrows slightly at the hipbone, just where I need it to flare a bit. I love my linen top for warm weather, but I think it could also be great in heavy silk or jacquard, even wool. Guess I need to get busy and start sewing!

I was tempted by the BR top in the finds below because of similar concept of "structured woven"--it's boxy but crisp and with darts--but I think it is not JFE, the sleeves are so wide on me as to overwhelm a bit, it's quite boxy but I can't size down, it's short which makes it mostly for skirts (due pear issues) and it's white, which is part of its appeal but is actually is not that versatile for me. I could use a slightly scaled down version (would be tempted then even by white) which would be more of a tailored or easy-tailored work top, and have tried on similar styles over the years but hard get the right fit in the right places.
I can tell it "speaks" to me, though, because I've dithered over it in the fitting room and keep thinking, if only it were this or that.

I can see the 'French ' concept on this top, and it does seem to fit you beautifully.
I don't know if I have items that I use as a model or inspiration for my style, I think for me is a more abstract concept.I gravitate to a couple of colors( both neutrals and non neutrals) and try to create figure flattering outfits as much as I can.

Here is a Theory woven top in rayon-wool with bust darts, boatneck/slash neck, and 3/4 sleeves. Just have put it on with trousers, but since it is high-hip it is good for skirts and especially flared or pleated, or pants or maybe culottes where you have a bit of slightly-fitted-over-full look. I hope, that is--still need to put it through the closet wringer. I'm sorry the photo lighting isn't that good.

The backstory is that I had seen it on sale but only in one size which was too snug, and there was not another size to be found in the store. I did not go to the effort of going online or trying to get the store to hunt it down nationally, but it became for me a kind of target piece that evoked a sort of "French" (my apologies to an entire country of people!) tailored simplicity that I like, that feels like "me" even though I also have been enjoying the big sweaters and things. And so hard to get slightly structured woven items, because it requires darts or seaming and cut. A knit close cousin is a WHBM ponte peplum top I have.

I gravitated back to the same sale rack several times when at this department store, and always just the same too-small size.

Then just this week, what? The next size up had appeared.
So here I am trying it and it puts me in mind of karymk's post on the outfit that personifies, but this is more a single-item concept. Or at least one I want to explore and be one aspect, one type of silhouette.

How about you? What items do you have that you want to use as models for your style?
