MaryK, thanks for being honest. I can't do coral though. And the belt on a trench bugs me (on me, not others). I need something that looks good but also works as a real coat.

Gawd, the Burberry... I can't afford that - who would pay that much for my kidney anyway?

LOVE the Burberry!!

Also like the coral Nine West if you are set on an anorak.

I like it but it is pretty casual. Are you looking for something a bit dressier (e.g., to wear over work clothes)?

I've got a BR trench that is lightweight, simple lines, no belt- I love it in spring and fall. I just checked on their site and didn't see any (mine is a few years old) but I know the fitted-and-no-belt coat is out there... just not easy to find. I always like coats w/o belts because they drive me crazy- too much fussing when you're going in and out a lot.

I'm with you, alaskagirl. For me a belt does not create a waist. It does nothing except make me look shorter and highlight my lack of waist. From your various posts, it sounds like you have the same issue. However, a coat that is tailored in at the waist, like your London Fog one, is perfect. I vote yay!

AJ, I find the belt often hits at the wrong place on me, making me look more busty or wide, and the material is always stiff and bunchy. Do you have a specific suggestion? You look fab in yours, but I always look like a street corner perv or an 80s nighmare!

ETA: Yet another issue is that so many trenches have collars that sit high, which give me the no-neck look - I need a collar that lies flat. Could I have more issues?!

Kelly, this would be for casual/dressy casual. What would constitute a dressy but functional spring jacket? (Let me guess - a trench!).

What don't you like about trenches? The belt creates a waist. Just make sure the lapel is on the medium to small size and/or doesn't point up towards the shoulders. A mid thigh length would be a nice dressy casual length.

I love that there is no belt. It looks like a sporty jacket but not in gear kind of way and the shoulder details give it a kind of military vibe. Is this to wear with jeans and casual pants?

I'm realizing I lack a spring outerwear jacket that is not gear. I thought about a trench, but the choices are overwhelming and I don't find the fit flattering to me. I did find this at Overstock which I love in the fatigue color:

http://www.overstock.com/Cloth.....oduct.html

What do we think as an all-purpose trench substitute? Or any better suggestions?
