Ah Inge, I wondered how you are managing to buy anything from Zara when we have the same size? So it was a recent change to reduce a number of model offeren in XL? Bummer!
I am happy for other though like Angie and Suz who are on the other end of the size spectrum and have stores like Zara to provide clothing in smaller cut. I only wish we have better online options in Canada catering to my end of the spectrum...:0(

I suppose it's small comfort to say that at least you've saved some money?

So sorry you struck out, and I have to commiserate with you on the Zara sizing system. I'm usually a Small, but I need a Medium at Zara. What do people do who size out of a Zara Large (which we all know is actually a Medium). I'm not sure why their sizes are so skimpy, but they are definitely missing out on a lot of shoppers.

Hang in there. The season is still somewhat young, and you're bound to find some good navy items.

I agree with your assessment of these items, Sveta, and am so sorry your first Zara order didn't work out-((
I share your frustration about them hardly offering any X-Large sizes anymore. You know, up until last year, they really did have X-Large for a lot more items, but since the beginning of this year this has changed and most clothes only go up to Large. And a lot of their stuff runs small to begin with. Sigh. Don't ask me why, I find it incredibly frustrating too-(

I like the blue and black plaid, fits nicely, but agree it's not your style.

Zara is a tough one for me. I am not really proportioned according to their cuts. My legs are longer than what they deem for an S or M.

As much as I get frustrated with the way certain manufacturers determine sizes and cuts (I'm looking at you CM with those tiny, skinny trousers in a size 12 that couldn't accommodate my size 10 foot, despite the fact I have other CM trousers in a size 10 that fit perfectly), I also think that, logically, we come in so many shapes and sizes that it's actually quite amazing that so many of us can fit into much of what is out there, without major alterations, given that many items only come in 4 or 5 sizes. I need something that fits comfortably over my broad shoulders, while your dainty shoulders get lost in too much fabric, but we both ought to "fit" a size M according to our bust measurement. Same goes for my non-existent butt and straightish skinny hips which could have the same width measurement on the sizing chart as a much smaller woman's very curvy bottom half.

For what it's worth, though, I do support Sveta's frustration with companies like Zara who, for some strange reason, offer some designs in an XL, but not others. If the garment is too large, alterations are an option, but, if it is too small, I'm automatically sized out because of my shoulders.

I would be completely frustrated as I bet I would also be sized out, despite being pretty average-- I'm only slightly taller than 5'8" so I don't have the benefits of being truly tall, but I also struggle to fit in average clothes because of long limbs and broad shoulders. As a young lady who wants to look stylish but is on a budget, this eliminates a ton of the fast-fashion or more affordable places my peers shop.

Sveta, I totally hear you on that. Talk about frustrating. It is like the petites dilemma. You find something you love at a store that supposedly caters to petites like BR or Ann Taylor and --- whoops!! -- that item is NOT available in petite. The only items that are available are less fashion forward. This is what hurts about being on either end of the size range and being NOT AVERAGE.

On the other hand, being not average also has some benefits in that it gives the boost on drama!! :-)

I have learned to not even try anything in Zara unless it a size large. Two exceptions hang in my closet -- the white moto vest Nancylee also has, and an oversize-ish bomber I got in the spring, which are mediums, and would probably be labeled small in any other store.

It's definitely a universal problem!

To make you feel at ease, I'm petite and of medium building and Zara's clothes don't fit either. Most of the time they are too small, or too long, or not flattering at all. I love the style of their clothes. I just wish they would make it for the North American woman.

Suz, I think that if this navy sweater was available in XL it may have worked.

I understand your point on being on another side of the scale and have the same hard time finding stuff which fits. I don't want their sizing to change but I wish they at least had size XL available for all models they have. Is this too much to ask? This is what really frustrates me. With CM at least they do not have size XL at all. It is frustrating of course but sets your expectations. With Zara they have it in very limited models and this is something I cannot explain. Why don't have ALL models in this size if you make it for some? What is the logic there? Oh well, I needed to vent!

Thank you ladies, I feel much better now.
The first time I set a foot into Zara store was in Italy. I remember the acute sense of disappointment when I realized that I am their biggest size which is not available for most of the stuff. It is really therapeutic to se that I am not alone!
I have a coat on order as well, a long one which I was hunting for ever. I am bracing myself to disappointment now...
Thanks again for the moral support, you are the best!

Sveta, so sorry you have had this frustration, and the much deeper frustration of not having very many options for ordering or in-store purchasing. I can certainly sing that tune with you!

I am able to fit Zara (mostly) in S, which is different from my regular size. So they are definitely cut small. I don't know about pants because I haven't really tried them. But most of what I have ordered I sent back simply because it didn't look as great as pictured, or the quality was not good. Still, I agree with Denise -- it is worth it for the one or two times that you get a hit at a great price. And considering the shipping is free and returns are easy, I figure it is worth the occasional experiment.

I actually really like the look of the first two cropped sweaters on you. But if the comfort factor is absent or you do not feel fab, back they go. The blue one, in particular, looks great.

I am not as crazy about the short sleeved sweater or the plaid top and agree that the soft fabrication of the plaid won't work for your style. I hear you on pocket placement. They do these odd things sometimes and maybe it looks "cool" in theory, but IRL, not so much.

We really are limited with our options here and it is frustrating, for sure. But please don't wish the sizing all to change -- if it did, I would have nowhere to shop. I am sometimes sized out of the major retailers that are available here. So I am grateful that places like CM and Zara exist, even if the result isn't always great in reality. I would only wish that there were comparable options available for all.

As I always complain about, Zara's sizing is crazy. Spanish sizing is crazy in general terms -small clothes in general and only 3-4 different sizes to choose from- but Zara has to beat them all (after Bershka, Stradivarius and Pull&Bear which are by the same company and targeted at teenagers).
I am very slim atm and still need a Large size for Zara's coats and jackets. And I am petite, too, so it's not like I am model tall and have broad shoulders, they just size very small, which is a shame because they exclude 3/4 of the Spanish female population over 16.

So sorry Sveta for your disappointment! In my experience, Zara is only good if you can go to an actuall B & M and try their things on. When I go to the ones around where I live, its always a guessing game as to what size I will need - and I'm so glad that I can just go into the dressing room and try it on right then, rather than have to wait for it in the mail , and anticipate its arrival, and then that feeling of your heart dropping when you realize that a) its the wrong size, b) the quality is iffy, or c) it doesn't work with your fashion persona! Also, I think they are very inconsistent in their sizing - things don't always run small - sometimes they run big - and I end up lamenting that they don't have an item in an XS because the S is too big for me. Its kind of crazy-making! However, I do agree with Denise - when I find something there that fits and is of decent quality I am very happy - because its usually a high-fashion/forward fashion item at a very affordable price!

I'll bet the suspicion that Zara's sizes are really junior sizes is correct. And the cut of that plaid shirt is just plain contrary. Who the heck would want pockets at the typical slenderest point of the torso?

Oh, bummer. I wear a large in Zara most of the time, it translates to approx. US 8 (my regular size) if you actually compare their S/M/L and numerical size charts. That's in tops. In bottoms, most of the time I don't even try. I agree their sizing is ridiculous.

I too have been disappointed with Zara. I have returned many things purchased via mail. I do a lot better in store. I am an M or S at Zara while usually an S or XS elsewhere. I have lots of Zara disappointment stories which I have not posted. Holes in tops after one wearing, rips after second wearing. Battles with customer service when returning a worn but ripped garment (with receipt). Now I don't even bother to go back for a refund or store credit. I assume the risk on my own. The upside to Zara is that when they get it right, it's so exciting to get a high-fashion item at a low price! I have three jackets that fall into this category.

It is them not us! I usually have the opposite problem the tops/jackets in L won't do up across my bust but the pants I can do M or L depending on the cut :)

I can only purchase items from both Zara and Club Monaco if I try them on in the store. Sveta, I think you an I are about the same size and I always need an XL from both stores.

Ah, yes, vacation. Well, I am afraid no Zara for me on vacation as I don't want it to be spoiled by the drama in the fitting room!

Currently Zara is a vacation destination. I went once last year when I was in Austin. Prior to that was the year before in San Francisco.
Although there is one under construction in Seattle, supposedly opening before the holidays.

Oh, it makes me feel better that I am not a freak of nature!
Una, if you need L in Zara I rest my case. Gaylene, this is why I don't even LOOK at pants in CM store anymore: cannot afford therapy you know :-)
I think it is much more stores where clothing running on the small side than opposite. In addition to Zara and CM I can add Jacob, Mango...oh and Forever21.
Anna, there is no Zara closer than 2h drive for me so trying in the store is not an option. I think I will stick with XL size from now on. I have succumbed and ordered a coat in size L though: now I wonder if I even should open it when it comes or send it back without even trying to avoid disappointment?

Zara runs pretty small and inconsistent. I've only ordered from their website once and got lucky. Other I limit my purchases to when I'm in an actual store and can try their stuff on.

*laughing at CM meltdowns*

It is rather devastating to grab a pair of CM pants, take them into the change room, and find that you can't even fit your foot into that teeny tiny pant leg. Ask me how I know...
