When I was recovering from foot surgery last year I had to wear a boot. I stuck to skirts, Bermuda shorts, and wide leg trousers (the material of jeans was too heavy against my foot).

Ladies, thank you all so much for the advice and well wishes. I have been sticking to skirts and some walk shorts, mostly. Though today I managed to find an old pair of flares that just barely fits over the cast. Anything to fool myself into thinking I look normal! The crutches might give it away....lol

I am thinking I am going to really try to play up the top part of my outfits: scarves, sparkly jewelry, a little décolleté, perhaps some hats? Probably not at the same time, though ;)

Only three more weeks!

Ouch! I was in a soft cast then walking boot for 10 weeks this past winter after having ligament repair surgery on my ankle. I wore skirts (knee or above the knee length) and leggings or tights the entire time; no pants. I think a longer length skirt might be a tripping hazard with the boot, which makes you very awkward and off-balance...you don't want extra fabric catching up in the boot or the flappy velcro tabs.

My advice: find a shoe that is approximately the same height as the walking cast ....otherwise, you become very lopsided and this will just kill your back, hips and knees as the imbalance totally throws your gait off. I at first was wearing a running shoe but it wasn't tall enough and I ended up wearing a Sanita clog. If you do wear tights be sure to wrap a scarf over the tights before you put the boot on so the velcro from the boot doesn't catch and tear at the tights. Took me a while to learn this, too. Hope you recover well.

Tunics with the leggings that come just below the knee might be another option. I hope you heal up soon!

I had my ankle in one of those for three months when I tore tendons. I feel your pain!

I recommend maxi skirts/dresses. Comfortable, easy to get on, and gives you a bit more modesty as you learn to move around.

Oh you poor girl!! I've had my broken toe in that awful boot thing too. I dressed in skirts most of the time.

Ouch! You are the second person I've heard about in the past week that has broken a bone by falling down at the airport. (The other person broke her leg at the airport at the beginning of her vacation - no fun at all.)

My first thought would be skirts or dresses - there would be no problem getting those on over the cast. If you do maxi skirts or long midis, that might be ideal since it would hide all or most of the bulky cast as well.

Okay, So a few weeks ago I broke my ankle. Luckily, it was a clean and simple break and I didn't need any hardware or surgery. What I did need is a big ugly cast. The first few weeks I was getting away with wrapping it up in scarves, but I just went to the doctor today and now I have an even bigger, uglier black walking cast-boot thing. The upside is that I can (sort of) walk now. The downside is, of course, that my wardrobe options are incredibly limited.

Pants, especially skinnies are right out.
Anything approaching stylish shoes are out (I can only wear one anyway)
I can get some clamdiggers and walk shorts on.
I can not yet carry a bag.

Am I stuck in gear and loungewear for the next three weeks? Any ideas to look stylish despite? Thanks in advance!

(By the way, a further argument for wearing a pashmina when you travel: we were on our way to the airport in San Francisco when I fell and broke it, and the nurse who stopped to help me out was able to wrap the ankle in my scarf to keep it stable and immobile until we could get to the hospital back home in New York!)
