Kristen, if the pants seem loose it is possible the culprit is that they are too big, not too small. It is possible you've lost enough weight that the pants are sliding down off your hips, becoming lower rise than they were intended. The jcrew matchsticks would do that to me: when I first put them on they were fine, no muffin top. But since they bagged out so much, within an hour, they'd be sliding down my hips and I would get muffin top.

At any rate, we can conclude the fit is definitely not right.

Another muffin-topper here!!! Great suggestions. I'm actually considering buying a pair of spanx undies now. I think it would be a bit too sifling in hot in summer, but this could work well in winter!, especially over clingy knit tops!!

I wish it was easier to find high-rise pants. Wow after the 80s I never thought I would say that again - I was an avid low-riser in the 90s!!

Kristen - too funny. Also see Angie's post on tops that camouflage this well.

Ahhhhhhhh, low-rise is the culprit!!! That makes sense; the two pairs of jeans that fit me now are both inherited from a friend, and both are low-rise. I normally wear a mid-rise so it hadn't happened before.

Well, now I know what to steer away from when I buy my own jeans (which will be happening as soon as I hit goal).

Thanks for helping me solve the mystery, gang!

LOL! I agree about the rise - I get the muffin when my rise is too low.

Oh and instead of crunches try some pilates!!!

Aww, I remember my first muffin top...

OK seriously, I get muffin top even in high rise jeans, and I'm not THAT big around the midsection. It is indeed where I carry my weight but it's not huge so I can't explain why normal muffin top solutions don't work for me. While I definitely feel much more comfortable in a higher rise, my jeans always seem to slide down below my pooch instead of staying above it, I suspect it's because they are never going to be high enough to sit comfortably in the crook of my waist. They are definitely the right size. Who knows?

But, the ladies have mentioned the standard solutions that work for NORMAL people (i.e. not myself) and they will probably work for you. Also, when I was the inverse of what I am now (bigger hips and bum with smaller waist), I found that some jeans would um...push the fat around my hips upwards. Sorry for the gross description, but I can't be the only one who had this experience...so...it doesn't necessarily mean your tum is flabby.

Heh, funny! I concur with the ladies about going up a size or getting a higher rise. It's the clothes that are the problem, not you!

HOWEVER -- if you want to avoid muffin top with your existing pants (e.g., if you are wearing top that would show the muffin top), you can try something like Spanx. Those types of body shapers really do suck your stomach in and give a smooth line.

haha funny story! i have had my fair share of run-ins with the muffin top..also mostly when I wear low-rise jeans. Usually I just get the next size up or try jeans that have a bit of a higher rise. Luckily this style has become more popular so you can look slimmer and also really chic.... it's a win-win!

I've always had a muffin top if I wear lower rise jeans. I've recently started wearing mid to high rise jeans and haven't had a problem since.

You are all probably going to laugh, but I have recently been having my first experiences with muffin top! I know, I don't know why I didn't get it before, when I was heavier. I think it's because the bulk of my weight was below my waistline, and so the size I wore to fit that effectively was able to include the weight around my middle too. But now my dupa is so much smaller and therefore my pants are too, and really the only excess inches left are around my waist/belly.

Thus, muffin top. It was the STRANGEST experience to realize what it was; I was in the car driving, wearing well-fitted jeans and a volume top and I felt this strange roll of skin pressing against my elbow. "Why is it hanging over my waistband?" I wondered. "I don't feel this much extra skin when I am standing up, or see it in the mirror...why is bulging out like this?" Then the penny dropped, and I literally started cracking up at myself!

So, what to do (besides more crunches)? Should I be wearing a different fit for my pants? Am I buying pants that are too small? I literally have NEVER had this happen before!
