What good news! I had a Dexa scan several years ago, and the results were not so good. But it was no surprise, since I am very slight, and such women apparently are at a higher risk for bone density issues.

I was lifting weights for a bit some months back but got out of the habit. I must get back to that. Thanks for the reminder.

Very interesting. I wonder if this might be worthwhile for me, as someone whose family has a strong history of heart disease (re: the visceral fat). Would be curious about bone density too, as the women in my family are on the slightly light-boned side. I am overdue for some medical checkups (cardiologist, dermatologist) and need to schedule some appointments.

Glad you got good news from the screening!

You can see subcutaneous fat, but not visceral fat, which is the "dangerous" fat the surrounds your organs. That's why a scan like this can be is helpful, especially for postmenopausal women, drinkers, etc. My results didn't distinguish between visceral and subcutaneous fat, but in my case, what you see is what you get, fat-wise.

I once worked in a diabetes research lab and had to handle some very fatty pancreases. Organs can accumulate a surprising amount of excess fatty tissue.

I had a bone density scan done 5-10 years ago. I was fine. I drank tons and tons of milk when I was a kid. They never mentioned anything about fat, though. I wonder if I had a different type of test? In any case, I don't need any technology to tell me where my fat is. I see it everyday. It reminds me of the dna test. They said one of the things you'll find out is whether your hair is straight or curly. I already know that my hair is straight, I told them.

I had one done a few years ago as a routine part of an exam. I didn't pay much attention at the time, but do remember how interesting it was to learn about the distribution of my body fat. I'll have to pull out and revisit the results.

Fantastic! I need to get one done and this is a great motivation to see if my university also offers it. I lift also but have not been as regular or consistent as I would like for the last two years.

I had one done a couple of years ago. I wasn't told the specifics, and didn't ask, but I do know that my bones are fine. I'm in my mid 50's, so that was great news, especially since I don't lift weights.

Good news indeed.

I had one done in my early 30s some time ago. Really helpful for me as the results weren't good. I got stuck into personal fitness as a result. I've kept it up and I'm grateful for the impetus it gave me. I had an assessment a year or so ago (early menopause check up) and all is well with my bone density.

I agree with your wise advice.

Very interesting - thanks for sharing! I just recently had a bone density scan and have not received the results yet. I have been using weights for a long time and hope very much that it will prove positive for my bones as well.

I've been wanting to get a DEXA scan for awhile, but until recently, didn't have access to an affordable one. I discovered that a local university, in the interest of serving the community, offers them at a very discounted rate.

DEXA scans measure bone density, as well as muscle and fat tissue. The radiation dose is the equivalent to three hours worth of background radiation, which isn't very much.

As it turns out (and as appears from some of my photos), I carry most of my fat in my lower body, which means that my heart and organs don't have much visceral fat. My bone density, as compared to that of a 30 year-old woman--considered to be the ideal--is 1.8 standard deviations above. The person doing my scan was surprised because the measurement was almost off the chart.

I've been lifting regularly now for about three years, with some long stretches without access to a gym. It's nice to see how much of a difference it can make to one's skeletal structural, and it's reassuring to know that one of my spinal issues isn't due to early onset osteoporosis.

If you have access to DEXA scan, I highly recommend one as a basis for future comparison.
