apropos quilts & IKEA, the newlyweds reportedly do not make their bed. Slipping into nicely arranged bedding is so soothing, I'm thinking of getting them a duvet & covers from IKEA for Christmas. Just a shake or two and you're done!

Yeah, I know. I balked at $500. And especially because honestly, my favorite comforter is a $20 thing from IKEA. I will never give it up.

...oh but dang. Maybe should have made a quilt from all those ugly blouses...

$500? I've gone overboard buying when I should've been organizing my closet, but even I don't spend that much in a year!
Blue and green sounds like a lovely soothing bedroom.

Oh wait: I have another guilt. I LOVE a thin cotton voile. Lightweight, soft, breezy, so you can still cover up in hot hot humid weather. I will buy ANYTHING in this fabric. No matter how ugly or twee. No matter that it's so ugly I won't wear it. Lol. The only time I've ever shied away was from a $500 summer quilt. Lol. Mostly because it was apricot and lavender and my room is blue and green.

Well, ok. Mostly because it was $500.

Harmonica, you donated them both?!?

Bijou and Beth Ann, thanks for the commiseration and the alteration idea. I may try it, but it might be too big over all.

Jenni NZ and Meredith posed the question better than I did--there's apparently something here that I like. I wish I could figure out what it is.

Another blue wearer, here! I regularly update my blue pieces, but also have to watch to keep my wardrobe balanced!

Both of these tops are part of the siren song of high summer to me! It gets hot, and we still want to look feminine and cute. You can easily shorten the straps on the peach top -- just take tuck and stitch from the front of the strap. This would bring the neckline up a bit. You've got great shoulders, so I think a racerback top in a fabric with a bit more structure would look terrific on you!

I have bought items that are less than perfect because they were in a highly sought after colour. It was only when I got them home that I saw the flaws... so yes I have made these mistakes too.

Yay for blue! I've done so many shopping mistakes, including crisp white button up shirts... I think of it as lessons to learn from. One of the most silly was buying expensive leather ballerinas in the wrong size, then buying the right size, then donating them both.

What Laura G said. Blue looks amazing. Otherwise, I have done the same thing on similar styling as that, more than once, tops with a peasant vibe. ( I would have said boho but may now try not to use that word after the recent thread on cultural appropriation). And I think there must be something about that styling that you love. So you may just need to be aware that something that sings to you may not always suit you.

Thanks, Laura G! Blue is such a favorite color of mine that I have to be careful not to buy too much. My very favorite blues are the ones that are almost purple, like indigo blue, periwinkle, the chicory flowers at the side of the road, and blueberries.

Rachylou, thanks for breaking down the differences for me! The blue fabric is also thin woven cotton (both are 100% cotton), but now I see the differences I glossed over before.
On oxfords or other button-downs: I gave them up a long time ago. I just don't like the way they feel. The collar itself didn't bother me, but that kind of collar is a marker for me that I might not feel comfortable in the shirt.

Oh but to answer the question: I persisted for years buying the stiff button down white shirt. And my dad bought them for me too. I have no bosom to speak of, but am still too curvy and short waisted for something so stiff.

Ok, these are officially different tops. Blue looks like a knit fabric; cut, deep rounded scoop neckline. The other looks woven, straight 'ruffle' neckline, smock shape, attached straps, t-back. Of the two, I think the blue is better. It's just less frilly. BUT I do like that straight neckline on you, if only it were an inch higher. That low neckline makes it seem too big.

Suz congrats on the weight loss! I can picture what you mean about those necklines for you. They emphasis the vertical dimension, so are slimming, therefore flattering when one is heavy, but you have a classic oval face, so don't need anything to lengthen it.
This is a different shirt, but the same cut, fabric, etc. I don't think it's flattering on me in either iteration. There must be something about it that appeals to me. Next time I see one advertised, I'll have to pay attention to styling, pose, props to try to figure out what's drawn me to it.

It looks like a different shirt! I love the blue colour for you, regardless...but yes, often when we lose weight we find that cuts and necklines that may have worked at a higher weight will not work so well with our lower weight. I used to wear wide Vs and even some U necks but at my lower weight they are not flattering on me.

Here I am four years and a few pounds ago in a blue version, and today in a peach one bought more recently (tags never cut, but too late to return it). This cut clearly isn't doing me any favors. Why would I buy it, more than once?

Have you ever bought something that just didn't work--and then repeated the mistake? Why do you think you did that?
