So after reading the NY Times article, maybe you're okay? It sounds like Sherlock's red buttonholes aren't quite the same as the award.

Wow - I learn something every day! My husband has a white dress shirt where one of the buttonholes is red and runs perpendicular to the other buttonholes. It's the bottom one, and would be tucked in. It's Daniel Cremieux, and he bought it at Dillard's. I wonder what that means?

All the buttonholes are done on Sherlock's coat, not just the top one.

The French honour looks different too, not like stitching around the buttonholes like in Sherlock's coat. It is an actual stripe that is sewn from the buttonhole to the edge of the lapel.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05.....wanted=all

So I say stitch away and don't worry about what others think.

This is priceless! What were the chances that someone in your daily commute would have known that? Just proof that fashion matters, I suppose, and that costume designers have a fascinating job!

Maybe you could make yours pink?

He was a very nice older man who looked like he knew what he was talking about. I think I need to go to France and do some nice things now.

Remember my Baker Street Coat? (http://www.modcloth.com/shop/c.....style-coat) - We had commented earlier on YLF that it would look more like the Sherlock coat with the red buttonhole!

That seemed like a really easy DIY, so I sat down with an episode of Downton Abbey (Season IV) and did the project. It only took about 10 minutes and looked pretty darn snazzy.

I was really excited to wear the jacket, but was approached by a stranger on the subway who asked me when I was in France. Uh, never been to France?

An education occurred - Sherlock's red button hole is a sign of a high honour in France, usually for service to the people.

Absolutely. Mortified.

At least it was an easy fix - and I love my jacket again - but it reminds me that fashion has other consequences too! And just because something looks good doesn't mean that I can wear it!
