Sounds about right! I like that you are aware of your personal formulas - I find mine very helpful as well.

Thanks for posting this, Dana. I am still trying to work out my own preferred silhouettes. I know I love fitted tailoring, but I also want to move towards more avant-garde looks, so need to figure out how to wear draping that maintains a sort of vertical line. Not sure I am clear about that (in my head any more than on the page) but I know it when I see it.

This is great insight! Thanks for sharing. Following up on today's blog post and shopping mistakes, one thing I learned is my items, especially fall, have to layer or be warm enough to stand on their own. All my fall outfits are slimmer fit tops with blazers or longer tops (such as a tunic sweater) that can stand alone. These two looks are going to be my fall uniform.

Jayne - I never track anything. I looked at my favorite items and saw a trend. I've posted ice cream cone outfits, but not in a while, no time!

Iron, I love the ice cream cone analogy. I am loving all the thought you put into this. Formulas can really help in the morning when time is short. Nice job, and thanks for sharing. I'm gonna try this too.

That took some effort I bet. Did you track what you loved our does it all happen in your head? I cannot see such patterns without picture. But I so see the tunic and skinny one in your posts. Maybe I haven't been around long enough to see the ice cream cone. Is it seasonal? Does this mean another purge is coming?

I am figuring out my silhouettes for fall/winter to avoid wardrobe orphans. I've discovered that unless it has a certain shape (and fabric and color), it doesn't get worn! So, here's pretty much the shapes I'll be sporting:

Long over skinny:
The key (to me) here is gently fitted on top and very slim on bottom.
- Tunic-length (midthigh or longer) tops or sweaters with skinnies and boots (both short, worn under skinnies, and tall, worn over skinnies).
- Shirtdresses or very plain dresses with leggings and taller boots. Longer tunic sweater over as needed.
- When it's colder, a mid-thigh-length trench coat, and a scarf.

Ice cream cone:
I call it this not because of the shape, but because all the fancy swirls are on top and the bottom is always the support act. So that's:
- Hip-joint-length shirts (knit, woven, or cowly knits) with bootcuts or straight-cuts, boots, and belts.
- If it's a knit shirt, add a vneck cardigan sweater over as needed.
- If it's a LS tee, *always add* a vest or other layering piece.
- When it's colder, a shorter jacket and maybe a scarf.

Yup, that's pretty much it. If it doesn't fit into my formulas, it doesn't get worn. I'm pretty proud of myself for figuring this out!
