Applauding the clarity of thought. Memories of school uniforms last a long time!

I’ve a lovely pointe blazer from Boden, so I’d say good choice!

Yes Joy, I have one light gray top and it would work as an alternate to white. I do layer under tops. I wear silk underwear and Uniqlo heat tech and sometimes just plain ls tees. I've reached the point where wool and cashmere itch, so if I'm wearing a wool top I have something under it.

Angie, my burgundy items are very dark. I don't like as much now as when I was a blonde. My new red sweater is definitely not an essential. My closet looked so dark that I've been adding some color this year, mostly red and coral. Where did all the purple go?

Thanks for the boost. I had an epiphany this afternoon after the Sundance catalogue came. I seldom give it more than a glance, but I looked through it today and realized something--white tops are not my essentials. I don't like off-white tees or sweaters, but I do like the white and off-white items that aren't so basic, and usually these are for summer wear. I saw some boho and lace tops I liked, and realized that I do wear white linen shirts once in a while--all warm weather items. My one white top that I've kept for a couple of years now is a Lucky sleeveless top with tucks and embroidery. So I'll just accept this reality. (I hate white button-downs--memories of high school again.)

WOW. High five, MsMaven. Fun to have similar essentials.

Are the red and burgundy items bright? If so, they're not essentials. For the rest - WELL DONE. You nailed it.

I'm seconding Joy's tip to layer under tops.

You are a woman with a plan. Maybe a light grey is your white.
I have yet to wear my one knit blazer ( medium grey) this season. Do you layer under your tops? It is a good way to stay warm without looking all bundled up.

My essentials mirror Angies to a degree.

1. Dark knit tops—mostly black, burgundy, navy. Plan on getting some navy for summer if I find some I like.

2. Jeans: Blue, gray, white. Can’t wear white in winter--a psychological due to social pressure in my teenage years. I prefer unfussy, well fitting, non-attention grabbing. Joes, NYDJ, BR are best fitting for me.

3. Striped knits: but I prefer lower contrast knits such as gray/white, navy/red/ red/white.

4. Blazers/jackets/cardis I feel the cold a lot more now. Knit blazers are good for my life now. I have 2 print blazers, but they are harder to wear. I am likely to look for color in cardi's. I do need a solid navy blazer. The Boden jacket on the knit blazer thread looks good.

5.Comfortable shoes. My feet keep changing and it's harder to find comfy shoes in my size. I need lace ups for walking, but the laces irritate my arthritis. Summer is for comfort sandals. Munro, Mephisto, Cloudsteppers, Vionics.. No more heels.

6. White, or in my case, off white tops should be an essential, but I have a hard time finding off/white or ivory tops I like. Plain white doesn't work on me.

7. Jewelry: in my case, either my David Yurman or 20 yr. old Must de Cartier watches. DY has been my favorite for 15 years. This year I’m trying to wear the infrequently worn pieces more often. They aren’t worn often is because they are dressier.

8. Bag: most of time a lightweight nylon bag. Got a nice Tumi bag on sale in December.

January goal was to take an outfit photo every day whether I posted it or not. I took one and didn't post it. Came down with some kind of virus and winter doldrums.

I intended to ignore sales, but couldn't resist 3 Boden (poppy red, antique pink and an antique pink cardi) sweaters on sale, and 4 pairs of shoes. 2 slides to replace my old ones, booties because I found out my NAS sale Munro's are too high in heel and uncomfortable after a couple of hours. Also fur-lined BR sneakers on sale $40 for $138 shoes (includes my rewards.)

February: I want to get back into taking outfit photos.

No more clothes buying until spring. We'll see. That Boden jacket is calling to me.
