I don't currently have access to pictures, but I will post some soon. Not that you need reminders of Reva, my ubiquitous black lab, but many of you never had the privilege of seeing my beautiful former guide dog McClure. He was really special - the most beautiful, loyal golden retriever I've ever seen. He died last summer a particularly aggressive melnoma came into his life. I'm glad he's no longer in pain (seeing him try to come greet me when he was having trouble walking was absolutely heartbreaking), but my goodness I still miss him. Huge hugs to all who have gone through a similar loss.<br /> We also still miss our dearly departed Freddie-cat. By the way - you'll be happy to know that although Gus was a real challenge, he's actually now the best behaved dog in the family - everyone in my family has a dog, but one has ever had to work really hard to train their dogs. I didn't know much about dog training beyond just the basics, but then again, I'd never had a dog who was like Gus What really worked out for us is that both of us were working from home when we adopted him and I think that helped a whole lot. He still acts all macho and tough, walks with what looks like a swagger, but he's a very good dog!! We have adopted them from a feral mother when they were 4 months old and they are the sweetest, well behaved cats you can imagine. My vet cannot believe they are feral guys. I guess that living with their mothe for so long time was really good for them as they have learned proper cat manners. :-)<br /> After we had them for 2 months we found another kitten on our doorstep on a cold Sunday morning before Christmas. She was hungry and scared and I could not leave her outside. We unsuccessfully tried to find her owner. She had some behavioral issues: did not want to use the litter box properly, was scratching and biting when playing...I suspect she was dumped because of this.<br /> Anyway long story short we adopted her too and named her Tigra. After 2 weeks with Winnie and Pooh she has changed very much: they taught her how to play without hurting others. They had a few rough days together in the beginning and we were worried but now they have so much fun together and give so much joy to us! Here he is atop the mountains in Park City (pic #1)...this is the most difficult dog I've ever had (he'd give Marley from the book/movie "Marley and Me" a real run for his money) - he's spent almost two years in the pound and has the attitude to match, but he's also the most needy, most cuddly, most emotional dog I've ever had. Acts like a real tough guy, hardened by living in the shelters and on the streets, but ..he actually moans and cries when you rub his tummy. Cries like a little baby when you give him some love and attention. I have never had such a difficult dog to deal with - in fact, when we adopted him from the pound, they (the shelter) were calling us every few days to see "how we were doing..." </p> <p>Gus jumped six foot fences, stole a whole roasted chicken off the stove, got into run ins with porcupines, broke three leashes in the first 24 hours after we adoped him - you get the idea. In fact, the very next morning after I adopted him from the shelter, I plodded downstairs in my slippers, intending to make some coffee - I don't have my glasses on yet, and I'm not even awake - and here's 'Gus' (named by the shelter and we kept his name) standing on all fours on the dining room table, the chandelier swinging wildly from the ceiling!!! </p> <p>Thing is? If you rub his tummy and give him a cuddle, he *cries*. </p> <p>I would say that Gus is an "unconventional beauty" - not so much for his looks but for his personality. </p> <p>The shelter we adopted him from seemed surprised that we kept him and kept on calling for weeks on end to see how we were doing. Yes, he is most definitely a challenge, but as tough as he thinks he is - he is so appreciative of love, care, affection and attention. I've never known another dog who cries when you give him a pat or a snuggle. </p> <p>Bonus pic of Gus with porcupine quills in his mouth ...(he just can't leave well enough alone...). </p> <p>From my calculations, he spent most of the first two years of his life in a shelter. So, by the time we adopted him, he definitely had some issues.
