You could put them on hold until spring Shannon, what looks like a lot of pattern on trousers may be more manageable for you as bermudas or clams BUT if there is a chance these may still be orphans let them go and do not look back.

I miss so many WIWs. I liked the outfit, I thought the floral skinnies, blue tunic top and clutch were so fashionable. I have seen you look great in skinnies Shannon. But I can see how floral skinnies, or for that matter any skinnies with BIG patterns, are hard to wear. I learned that lesson when I got these last year (I returned them). There was life after this fashion failure though, I just learned to purchased patterned pants with small patterns.

So Shannon....not to delve too deep into territory you might not want to get into, but in case you DO want to get into that territory, WHY do you think you continue to try to make items work that just feel wrong to you?

Is it feeling badly that you got caught up in the excitement of a moment and bought them? Or some other reason?

I am thinking maybe this could be another thread, but I am wondering if shoppers can be grouped into different categories....those who make occasional (or frequent) impulse purchases and feel badly afterwards for buying things that turned out wrong, and those who go to the stores but bring back the same boring stuff again and again and feel badly that they DIDN'T ever try anything new?

And I'm thinking....both types come with some fashion risks. But you know...if you are type one, I think there are some major advantages to being that way as well.

Well thank you all for your wisdom! I am deciding whether to put the floral skinnies away until spring and revisit them then or just send them off to Goodwill and wave bye bye. Angie is of course right again - I need to be the boss of my clothes, not the other way around. Sometimes I wear myself out trying to make things work that really I am not comfortable wearing, both physically and emotionally.

Claire - I promise I won't get rid of my Wit & Wisdom skinnies.

I'm sure you know that all skinnies are not created equal! I was shopping at the Nordstrom Rack and I came across a rack of NYDJ denim. I've tried them in the past and I found the thighs to be too tight. But things change, and they were half price, so I grabbed a selection in my size and tried them on. Well!! The ones marked "skinny" fit me the best and looked absolutely wonderful! And - surprise, surprise - they are not really skinny. They're straight-legged. They make me look THIN! And comfy and soft as pajamas. Score! I brought them home.

I was watching reruns of Suzanne and Trinny and they talked about patterns and the effect on our bodies . THese skinnies have big flowers and color drops with lots of flat color in between. This was not a pattern they recommended on the area of the body we are trying to distract attention from. So this causes the eye to focus on the pattern and not the whole outfit.

Hang on to your Wit and Wisdom skinny jeans though! They ARE fab on you and you might feel like wearing them later! Don't lump all skinnies in with the floral skinnies, which even I couldn't wear. My DD has a pair, and honestly, I think *she's* pushing it at 16 (she has recently become much curvier). Those pants are just very hard to wear.

Oh, Shannon, skinnies are not the easiest to style at the best of times. Those floral ones, while extremely cool, are also very LOUD (hey everyone! Look at my legs!), which makes it even harder. Not that your legs aren't fab, but that's a lot of attention drawn to one area, right? If it were an allover print on a dress, it would be much easier to style, I think.

I'd give up the pants if you can't find a way to feel great in them. Life's too short to not feel fab.

I totally sympathize with your reactions to the skinnies. It took me eons to jump onto the skinny jean bandwagon, and I'm still not sure that I quite belong. In fact, the only time that I feel comfortable with that silhouette is when I'm wearing a longer tunic that reaches to my mid thigh. (Problem is, I'm finding that I like that look with my jeans tucked into boots, but I'm frequently annoyed that the jeans bunch up around the boots... but that's *my* problem).

Like the others have said, I think your style is fabulous. You have so many GO TO looks in which you look SO wonderful that, if you're not feeling Fab in the skinnies, it seems wise to move on. Or, as you have done, put the pants away in a holding zone until perhaps you're ready to think about them again. I know that it sometimes takes me several tries to feel like myself in a new silhouette that I'm not accustomed to…and sometimes, it just never happens.

Shannon, I agree that you can absolutely wear skinnies, but those particular ones are challenging. Granted, I'm quite self-conscious of my lower half, but I restrict my skinnies to dark tones and low-contrast patterns. I think those are easier to wear for most body types!

I hear you Shannon - I think I'm going through the same thing regarding both body image and skinnies. I gave away two pair this year and the only ones I have left that I *will* wear are not really all that skinny. I must say that even on the models when I look online, I see sort of a "sausage" look on many so it's not even so much that I have extra weight (though I do have extra).

I'm not much of a floral-jeans type of person, but I kind of like the "tapestry" or other subtle prints I'm seeing on jeans now. I think those would be much easier to pull off than a bright floral pattern, especially if you're self-conscious about your lower half, since small prints are more slimming. (Example: http://piperlime.gap.com/brows.....-denim.jsp)

Shannon it could be any number of things that is making you feel this way about skinnies. But you know, you don't have to wear skinnies:). I came to the conclusion very quickly that BF jeans do not work on me. I don't look like I want or feel like I want in them and I have decided they do not fit my style persona. Sometimes I feel a bit of a tug seeing you all look look so great in them..but they are just not for me. Now I think you look great in a skinny leg but hey if you don't feel good, don't wear them. Maybe a straight leg would work better for you if you are wanting something more streamlined, bit otherwise wear what makes you feel good and what makes you happy.. And you do look so fab in a bootleg:)

Shannon, you look great in pants of all types so if you aren't digging the skinnies right now, no big deal! I think it may just be that specific pair of floral pants...I think if you found a different pair you might feel differently. The flowers might be too sparse on this one and the grey background a bit drab. I have no doubt you could rock the right pair of skinnies though...do you have burgundy ones or brocade ones? You're making me want to pull out those H&M floral pants again but I doubt they'd fit at this point.

Keep on rocking the pants you DO feel fab in, because there are still plenty of choices in your closet!

Shannon, as a fellow petite whose apple-ness is growing all the more pronounced these days, I found myself really nodding along to what you, as well as Firecracker and Rae said about the tough balancing act of skinnies.

In theory, it sounds like I should go closer to the body to avoid swamping my short frame. But in actuality, possibly because I'm not the slender IT that Una is with her strong but dainty legs, I find I look more square in skinnies! Unless, as Rae said, the top is quite a bit more floaty or A-shaped or longer than the average T-shirt or sweater.

Now, I love my red skinnies from this summer and found them surprisingly versatile---in terms of *colour*. But in terms of tops, I think they also worked mainly because I'd changed the style of tops I was wearing to looser, more smock-like fits and tunics this year as well. I don't find them working with a body-skimming T-shirt or sweater. And the top needs to have length enough to NOT cut across the widest part of my hips and thighs. This even though my calves are very chunky, so it's only recently (cue: belly!) that I've felt like a lollipop. They really seem to need volume *and* length on top.

Of course, granted your shape is not the same as mine. But I did think, looking even at the Cookie Monster thread (by the way, can I just say I *love* your husband? do you mind terribly?), that the sweater could do with being just an inch or two longer to flatter even more.

It's fine. You know what works for you, and it's not skinnies, not this season. That's FINE! Wear what you feel fabulous in, and rejoice that you can find fabulosity in your closet one way or another.

I think the others may be right when they say it might just be these pants. There's no getting around the fact that the print is LOUD and it might be drawing more attention to your lower half than you'd like.

But... if you don't feel fab in skinnies then nobody says you have to wear them. One reason I have a lot of skinnies these days is that it seems like all the cool prints/colors this season are only on skinny jeans. I like bootcuts too but they only seem to come in blue, so I don't really need more than 2 pairs. So, I think if you want the trendy prints of the season you might have to go with skinnies but if you just want well-fitting jeans that make you feel good, there's plenty of different styles to choose from. I am also annoyed that most skinnies are too short and too low rise for me this season, but I will add that you might want to try some higher rise ones if you can find them. They are very leg lengthening and cover up muffin tops better.

PS - Although leg lengthening is not a huge priority for me, I still found it interesting when I looked at my apparent leg length in different types of jeans (I posted the photo in Mochi's last WIW thread) and everyone seemed to agree that the dark, tight skinnies (with similarly dark boots) were the most lengthening.

awwww, Shannon - big hugs!!!!

You *are* feeling some of what I was feeling. It is partly the tremendous stress you've been under, partly the time of year, partly genuine styling frustration. Because Mochi is right, those pants would challenge anybody. That you made them so fun and fresh even for one wear makes them worth it.

You look good in skinnies to my eye. But if you don't feel fab, then there is no harm giving them a rest.

I believe it is easier to wear them in dark neutrals. So far, that's all I own in skinnies...and I am awaiting my (dark) patterned jeans with some trepidation. I do not have Una's slender legs. However...

With these floral ones, why not put them aside until the spring. I have a feeling you will find the right tops to style with them then. They could be the perfect item for weekends in March when you are LONGING to see green and flowers but Winnipeg is yielding only snow and frigid wind. At that time, the bright, fresh blouses and lighter weight drapey sweaters will be crowding the stores and you will be able to find the right partners for these. I saw them in person, so I know that they are a fun, cute, slightly silly but adorable item...if it were me, I'd aim to get a season of weekends (so maybe 3 or 4 weekends) of fun from them and enjoy them for the fling they are!

There is no law that says you have to wear skinnies. In fact, if you find that your primary goals is to balance the lower part of your body with the upper, you may ultimately decide they are not for you. IMO the reason why bootcuts remain a classic is that they balance all the shapes - IT, apple, pear, hourglass... everyone's got something up top that's wider than their ankles. This is what made me take so long to warm up to skinnies, and I still only really like them with boots adding some bulk to the bottom, taking the place of the wider hem of bootcut jeans. DH really hates me in skinnies to this day.

That said, I'm NOT saying you look bad in your skinnies, and I'm not saying skinnies are horrible and unflattering. However, I think they are most slimming when the wider parts of the body are obscured by some kind of loose tunic - when that happens, the slim knees, ankles, wrists, etc. become the focal point, rather than the difference between the width of the knees/ankles and hips/shoulders/boobs. Conversely, the skinnies add the most curves when the whole leg is exposed... sort of a conundrum for us shorties who like to tuck and lengthen the leg.

Anyway, I'm not wholly sure if any of that made sense. The gist is that it's all an optical illusion in the end. You are your beautiful self no matter what you're wearing, and I hope you don't feel down because of some silly ol' pants.

Oh Mochi - you are a DEAR! I'm sitting here actually laughing...your honesty is so appreciated, you have no idea. You are not insulting me at all and I know that :)

I think maybe me and floral skinnies just are not a match made in heaven. I will chalk those ones up to yet another purchasing mistake (although I didn't technically pay for them as they were payment from consignment).

Una - I do think a huge part of my growing hatred is because of the pattern. But I'm also a bit unsure of my Wit & Wisdom dark skinnies as well. I think I'm just going through a brief body dislike period, that's all. I'm like Firecracker - I always feel longer and leaner in my bootcuts or straight legs.

Aw, Shannon... it could just be these pants. Floral skinnies are not for everyone, and you, like me, tend to jump in first! Wear what you love, but do keep an open mind as it may be the pattern. If you don't like long waist surrendering looks skinnies are hard to wear.... I know you like to tuck and belt.

Funny what Firecracker said - I only wear my bootcuts when I don't mind feeling short and squat. They make me feel unbalanced, perhaps because I tend to get my lower balance from chunky boots and shoes, which can't be seen with bootcuts.

Hi, Shannon. You may (justifiably) hate skinnies regardless, and I understand. Plus, you look so good in many other skirt and trouser styles that it really doesn't matter (in my opinion) if skinnies aren't for you. I just had to say, though, that I doubt I would like those skinnies on anyone. Anyone. I thought I was going to try breaking it down but I'm not going to. I don't want to insult you and am simply trying to make a clear separation between lovely you and a faulty garment. I would look like horrendous crap in those pants, and I basically feel suited toward skinny jeans.

I can relate to your feeling about skinnies, I think. I have a strange ambivalence about mine. (I have this silhouette in jeans, ponte knit pants, and stretch-woven pants, all dark neutrals.) I love their versatility--I'll wear the jeans with short or long tops (the other pants just with long, butt-covering tops), and I can wear them with short or tall boots, ballet flats, flat oxfords, virtually any shoe in my closet! LOVe that about them. But I don't think they're the most flattering pants on my figure. For that, I really like the hip- and shoulder-balancing, leg-lengthening boot cuts. So on days when I want to look long and lean, and a little more refined, I go for the boot cuts.
