Your daughter is hilarious! MaryK might have a point, though. Kids say the funniest things and I always get a laugh from her comments.

Hah. Once my chatterbox daughter almost CAUSED me to run a red light with her incessant talking--I couldn't focus on my driving!

I agree; she will be looking up to you for being so stylish, and before you know it will be stealing stuff out of your closet!

OMGoodnes! She is the cutest thing evah! Out of the mouths of babes. At that age they broadcast whatEVER you do all over the whole wide word. Once I ran a red light by accident and my DD trumpeted that far and wide at the most inopportune times!

I'm dying from the cute, clever, adorable witty little YLF girls here. It is hilarious and oh-too-true what they come up with!

My daughter (now 23) was so girly and would have been thrilled to see me in heels...the instant we would set foot in a department store, she would make a beehive for the little girl dresses section and just be overcome with pleasure. And sadly, that was probably my lowes point, fashion-wise, ever. But if I wore anything new at all, she would give me huge glowing reviews!

I can definitely picture her saying something like IronKurtin's little one with her insistence that "It's Fashion!" Heh. There is nothing as bossy and righteous and justice-imparting as a four-year-old girl. You do not mess with them.

I think I've told this story before... I had a Helmut Lang sweater with slits on the sleeves. DD was still in her high chair, but very verbal. My husband said, "Your sweater is ripped." And I responded, "No it isn't, it's supposed to be that way. It's fashion." DH said, "Well, that's stupid." And my little champion piped in: "NO IT ISN'T DADDY, IT'S FASHION!"

She has, of course, also done the "Your tummy looks like it has a baby!" and my favorite, "Mama, your teeth are yellow." But she continues to be a champion of my wardrobe, at least.

Rae, what did Rute's daughter say to her? Something similar? I feel really bad that DD said that to me, but I guess it is a good kick in the pants to try SYC again!

Mo, you would be proud of me. I went today to return a bunch of stuff to White House Black Market and was sitting there looking around while she rang up all the returns and did not even want or get a single item! I think I may be turning the corner!

Hehe! Love these. I think Rute's daughter inspired her SYC as well - hey, if your loved ones can't give constructive criticism, then who can?

Also, at 4, I do wonder if the bootie comment might have been lost in "translation" from kidspeak? My workout wear and lounge pants are tighter and emphasize the backside in a way that office pants never would.

GP--good for you! That your daughter says stuff like that despite your best efforts to shield her just shows how much girls are exposed to this kind of language from preschool, television, movies, etc......

Still, at least for awhile Mom is the best influence so I think our efforts can counteract, somewhat, the big bad world!

Isis, so true. I remember my mother was always "on a diet" and took Dexatrim and used to complain about how faint she felt because she wasn't eating enough. I vowed never to do that to myself or my daughter! I actually never have said anything about my body to her (I don't think I'm fat, and don't mind my belly so much and don't even think my butt is big at all) so that makes her comments even more hilarious! But I agree, we are role models for how girls see themselves--good reminder!

Your daughter is ADORABLE!!!!! Wow!

Little girls are sponges. You may already do this, but one thing I vowed NEVER to do is to have my daughter overhear me bemoan any body part (belly, thighs, tush), or talk about a body part in isolation, or use the F-word (the 3 letter F-word), or hear me talk about dieting or food......

We are their role models!

I think the idea of being happy with what we have is a core part of SYC that I'm finally trying to get a hold of. You have lots of lovely clothes! Perhaps the gentle needling by your daughters comments could be the tipping point to getting back to a shopping ban for a while. At least you know she isn't sugar coating it LOL!

Your daughter is adorable! And it's so cute she is interested in style. I was oblivious before my late teens to everything style. And I thought that shoes were such a weird passion ( till my parents bought me a knee-length pair of dusty rose suede booties , then i got hooked) .
And the clothes comment, wow she is daring young one. I like her panache!
Don't worry about SYC'ing that much. When I replaced my wardrobe ( after college i needed a little bit of professional edge)it's been a year and half of buying lots of stuff.
Then in the October when i decided to SYC i thought that would be hard, but it kinda wasn't . Now I'm not officially SYC'ing but I've become terribly picky and I've slowed down considerably with shopping. So don't worry, you'll be fine.

She is just so freakin' cute !! I love how she feels she should be actively engaged in your dressing. At this age, they see you and themselves almost as one...so if mommy is going to think about her clothes then mommy is fair game !!!

My daughter is 8 and I also make her wear leggings and pants under skirts for school ( in the summer she wear light, gym shorts under skirts ) and she STILL doesn't understand why I don't do it !!!

And they come up with this all on their own !!! My girl and boy make comments ALL THE TIME about how I have too much.....but whenever I suggest cleaning out my closet and they clean out theirs, craziness and opposition ensues.

What I find so great about your DD , is that she really thinks that she is being helpful. When she is older you can coach her on ways that aren't "so close to home" LOL !!

Please let her know that that bandana and tutu are YLF KILLER !!

I just love these kinds of stories ! Thanks !

Boy, my 4-year old daughter has been quite the fashion critic this week! I'm sure you guys have seen her comments on my recent WIW posts, but she has a new zinger every day!

Thursday she patted my apple tummy and said "Mommy, your tummy is round because me and baby stretched out your tummy and now it's always round. But that's OK."

Friday she saw me putting on my skirt and said "Mommy, you need some pants to go with your skirt" (because I always have her wear leggings under her skirts). I said "No, I'm just wearing the skirt." And she said, "But then when you twirl, everyone will see your underwear!"

Yesterday she said, "Mama, you always wear high heels and it makes a loud clop-clop-clop sound." And she asked me not to wear heels that day (so I wore my Converse instead of wedge sandals).

Then last night she saw me in my new lounge pants and said, "Mama, your butt looks like it just got bigger."

And today she announced at the dinner table, "Mommy buys too many clothes and she needs to stop!"

Ouch! I guess that means I am on SYC for a while! Her honest comments are really funny, but it's starting to hit too close to home! :(

PS--I wonder if DH bribed her to say that! ;P

ETA: Here's a couple pics of her in outfits she chose herself! She layered two tutus (yellow and pink) in the first pic. And she loves to try on my heels!
