My daughter has a beautiful Calvin Klein skirted coat that she has literally worn out , wearing it every day the last few years of her bachelor's degree. She researched and just asked me to reoder one she found new with tags for $60, the same price we bought her orignal one from Sam's Club....Of course I said yes, as she has never loved a coat this much... Sure beats this exact one and the pirce they are asking....

Good luck to your daughter!

That's definitely a nice coat! I hope it ends up working out.

I'm remembering that, when I went to college in Pittsburgh, my mom bought me a really ugly dark green puffer on sale somewhere (I think from Eddie Bauer, actually) and I wore it maybe twice. Instead I just wore my (much cuter) wool coat with thick sweaters and basically resigned myself to being cold whenever I went outside for three months. Hopefully your daughter has better judgment than I did.

I own this coat. I run cold, but I have lived all my life in the upper Midwest and Rockies and don't think I am too wimpy. I consider it a coat for 30 degrees (with liner) to low 50s (without liner )if worn with a medium weight sweater underneath. I assume a grad student will actually be spending time walking on campus, standing at a bus stop etc not just darting from car to house.
In looking at Boston climate data from NOAA it says that there are 27 days when the maximum temp is 32 or below. There are 97 days when the minimum is below 32. The figures for my home city are close, we have slightly more days with minimum below 32. I have, and wear, a thigh length Eddie Bauer down coat much of December and January.
The coat itself is quite practical : has hood (although it is droopy and I usually use a hat, but it is there in emergency), washable, pretty windproof and waterproof for nontechnical gear.

It's a great adventure and congrats to you both!

I agree that how we respond to cold is highly individualized. I didn't have a puffer coat going to college in Rhode Island, and I didn't have a car, I walked to class from off campus. I had a wool peacoat and layered sweaters or later on fleece jackets under it. Hats, scarves and gloves though were great.

When you get the coat it's probably worth it to test out layering. The other thing is as soon as you get to class the temperature can vary a lot. From icy to overwarm, so it's nice to shuck layers rather than one big puffer coat you have nowhere to hang.

I didn't pick out this coat for her, she looked at options with me and chose this, I just paid for it.. I just wanted to get started now and see if we could find something off season at a good price.
.JAileen, lol I haven't bought her an item of clothing she didn't pick out since she was 10!!!!

I wanted to her to get a coat from Lands End that was rated warmest, for -40F temps....If it doesn't end up being warm enough I have no doubt her grandmother will take her to get another option in town...don't envy her THAT shopping trip...

.Her father's hometown is Dedham, not far from Boston and she has spent many winters there on Christmas vacation trips, so is well aware of the cold and biting winds... She is asking for a ski mask type thing to keep her face warm... I run very cold ,she however does not....I can't believe her lack of layering for our winter that just past.....

Thanks for the boot suggestions she is researching those right now....Will pass that on to her...

This is a huge milestone and the beginning of her graduate goal to go all the way to a PHD! She is a great student and would prefer school than real life, so a good thing for now anyway!!!!

I know the urge to help our children, but does your daughter want you to pick out a winter coat for her? She is a college graduate, after all. It's just so personal. I'd be inclined to give my own child, my son, money to pick out his own coat. BTW, my son was in Boston this past year, and he didn't think it was that bad of a winter. I know, he sounds crazy, but he runs warm. I'm sure I would have been a popsicle!

The description says "cross- seasonal trench" which does not sound like a real warm winter coat for me so I agree with Joyce that this may not workfor Boston wintes. They may no have as low temps as we are here in Canada but the damp and cold strong winds from the ocean should make winters pretty cold I think.
She may reconsider her realtionship with puffers during that first winter though.
"rather freeze than wear puffer" is a suspicious statement from somebody who has never experienced really cold winters

I live in Boston and I don't own a puffer. I truly don't think you need one here. I wear a knee-length or just-above-the-knee wool coat with wool sweater underneath and I am plenty warm. Now if she is allergic to wool, then I don't know what to do! You can get a wool coat with a lining (Thinsulate - J Crew makes these - or quilted) for extra warmth. In college I wore a shorter peacoat every winter and was fine. I had a parka and never wore it because I was too vain to wear gear, even back then. And I grew up in Southern CA! I think I had seen snow ONCE in my life before I went to Boston for college. I promise you she will acclimate!

She WILL need good snow boots, with good traction. Sorels are good, as are Timberlands. I personally prefer tall ones for snow, but the classic Timberland hikers are actually a really good dual-purpose snow/hiking boot.

Also yes, hats, scarves, and gloves/mittens.

Congratulations to your DD!
I have an EB Weather Edge parka that looks much like this one from a few years ago. However mine is a heavy nylon outer fabric and I hate it because of all the noise it makes. You can't move without crinkling. Since yours is polyester, maybe it will be quieter. I sure hope so. If it arrives and is noisy, I would not advise keeping it. It will end up driving her crazy.

ETA: My Weathers Edge is not winter weight. One would need to layer very heavily under it to be warm. It does help with wind and moisture. Although it says that it "breathes", it doesn't do a very good job.

Congrats on your daughter's milestone.
That coat does not look very warm to me but it may work for rainy days of which there are plenty in the Northeast. She will need a good coat for Boston Winters. They should specify the temperature range that the coat covers. You can see that in the Lands' End catalogues but this is not a good time to find a Winter coat. You have plenty of time to do your homework.
Usually as Fall kicks in you start finding good Winter coat sales.
She will also need some Timberland type of boots with a good grip, hats, gloves, scarves...
A mother's work is never done...

Well DD chose Boston College for her graduate studies and the mother in me is springing into action.... How is my southern daughter going to manage a drastically colder winter????

I decided to look for a longer coat as she has a great ski jacket, but nothing to the knee level...I looked at Lands End and Eddie Bauer... DD hates everything about the puffer coats and would rather freeze than put one on...

So , we found what I hope is a great althernative and after reading the comments from northerners that said it worked well for this coldest of season's that just past, we are giving it a go...Great price, too, which is why I wanted to buy now!!!!

http://www.eddiebauer.com/cata.....e=TRENCH-C

She is 5'4 and it will fit her at the knee unlike the model....
