I have a bag of higher end pieces I really need to list on Poshmark or the like. I’ve been putting it off for ages. Sigh.

Glad your second try was successful! What a relief! Some shops are just odd or not into selling our particular style, honestly.

Case in point, I just had two very different consigning/selling experiences:
First, I made an appointment with an upscale suburban consignment shop (think, lots of Lily Pulitzer and Eileen Fisher - I’ve found Veronica Beard and Michael Stars things there, that sort of vibe). I had low expectations and some trepidation, though I had chosen carefully and brought very gently used or new spring/summer items from good but not uber-fancy brands (Joie, Ba&sh, Zimmerman, but also Boden, BR and Hudson Jeans) - and they were super nice! They took 13 out of my 15 items! I was amazed. I understand why they didn’t accept the other two - one was a brand they don’t accept (Karen Kane) and one was a silver bracelet with some wear on it. I also spent a bit of money in there that day, so I do hope my stuff sells.

Next, I popped over to our local Buffalo Exchange, where they pay cash on the spot. It’s the kind of place my millennial/gen z kids like to shop, and I tried to choose the right things for their vibe: a pair of brand new Nike Pacifics (cute, hurt my feet), some Allsaints tops, and a bunch of Uniqlo and Gap items. They took 4 of my dozen or so pieces including the Nikes but passed on most of the Uniqlo and Allsaints. Not sure why, but I don’t understand the aesthetic tbh. In any case, I got enough cash to treat DH and myself to bubble teas down the street. Next time maybe I’ll send my daughter in to sell for me!

All this is to say, I think you found the right spot on your second try. I’m sticking to the first place in the future, assuming I sell anything.

I have only ever donated . And I do a lot of it . Round two was more of a success! Cash on the spot - only declined a brand new quilted soft denim Free People jacket and an almost new leather Danier blazer. Also declined my Prada bag - which is making me laugh at my ego. My husband came out with a gorgeous almost new leather car coat with a zip out lining (Danier) and I found the cutest pair of pale blue/white nylon/leather sneakers. The process was quick, efficient, the woman who worked with me was polite, complimentary, and I left feeling good :). I'll be back.

I’ve been to a consignment shop in our area once, but didn’t see anything appealing. That’s probably why it never occurred to me to take my things there. I donate nearly everything to a charity shop, or sell it at our church’s trunk sale, with the proceeds benefiting the poor and the homeless. One year, at the trunk sale, I sold a couple dozen vintage Coach purses. They were languishing until I put them on sale - “Buy One Get one Half Off, “ then they sold like hotcakes. :)

I am a very experienced consignor and completely relate to your experience. It is only by forming long term relationships with a couple of places that my experience has become easier.
On the one hand, most consignment shops are small and they really have room for things they think will sell. And what will sell depends a lot on their particular clientele (although it is hard for me to imagine why they would not take your Prada and Coach bags). On the other, and this is based on a lot of experience in two different countries, not all owners/workers are all that knowledgable.
As Angie suggested, keep your expectations low and, I will add, keep the Prada bag .

I have had that same experience and honestly can’t take the downer of rejection, including a resale shop that gives cash immediately (after about a 1-2 hour turnaround on evaluation).

I got some satisfaction for s bit when I was able to simply give my items to a couple of younger women ( daughters of friends) who sold on Poshmark. That ended and now there is a resale shop -for-a specific charitable organization - that appears to focus on somewhat more upscale items.

I don’t sell on Poshmark but have actually started buying a few items there.

I think we’ve all had this experience
I have to constantly remind myself “they are buying what they can reasonably sell, not what is the best”.
My most infuriating experience was driving 20 miles to a consignment store more aligned to business casual because that’s what I was selling. The website and socials said they accepted drop offs Sundays until 2. Got there at 1 and was told they weren’t taking drops offs and I should have called. Wtf. No you update the website & the socials, or you change them to say call before coming. Sorry rant over.

They did try to sell my Z&V jacket without much success last year and I just took it back - I'd rather keep it ( or get brave and try to sell on Poshmark - lol ). Sorry for the sad experience - been there as well ;-( .

That is frustrating and disappointing! For many years I avoided consignment, it was too much work for too little return for the effort. Only over the past year and I had success with consignment as both the consignee and a customer. The owner of the store really can make a huge difference in the stock and the experience!

Ugh, that is so frustrating.

I had an off-putting experience with one local consignment shop I had been selling (rarely) through. I dropped off some things to them a couple of years ago, and they accepted quite a bit. I stopped back in a couple of months later to cruise through the racks (I’ve purchased once or twice there), and saw nothing of mine in the racks. But my payout from them had been very small. I couldn’t help but wonder if they pull some things and sell them through Poshmark or the like. I hate to be suspicious that way, but the question entered my mind. Put me off of consigning for a while.

I should add that I've had great luck consigning and buying at Turnabout, a local chain in Vancouver and Victoria. I've got some of my best stuff there. They have a designer branch and a regular branches but the regular branches also sell a certain amount of higher end stuff and they love to get stuff from the nicer chain stores in good condition. So maybe the one your DD suggested will be better.

My daughter tells me that the girls (as I refer to the large group in general, lol) go to a place that is actually a Canadian chain that gives you cash on the spot. I'm giving this one more go tomorrow morning and if that doesn't work out, I'm keeping the bags, and donating the rest. Maybe I'll try Poshmark but I'm resistant to packing up stuff and getting to the post office on someone else's schedule (the buyer). It's also NOT how I want to spend my precious days off work.

Oh gosh! Yes, so frustrating and disappointing. I've found consignment stores a bit snobby. It's hardly worth it to get your stuff all clean and ready, do the driving and the parking...only to have it bear so little satisfaction. I prefer the stores that offer either cash or trade up front. Even then, it's sometimes too much work!

I used to frequent Crossroads, a resale shop that was just blocks from my apartment when I lived in the city. My visiting son, then in his late 20's went to shop there, as they have a big men's section. So I gave him my giveaway bag of clothes to take along with him for cash or trade. When he returned they had taken everything from my bag !, and given him much to shop with. Even though I had sold there before, they were always picky,(tho not snobby!) they had never taken everything. And it sure made me wonder about ageism. Like as if these also very young salespeople were thinking, hey if this 60 year old lady owns these clothes, how cool can they really be?? But when presented by this cute, talkative young man...well...it's interesting.

I also like this that you said: Also a funny reminder that your things are only as lovely as they are to you. So true, even with some things I have given away to friends or relatives. I realized I had unrealistic expectations of what those items might mean to someone else, or the joy they might bring.

Oh LJP and SUZ your tales are so equally fascinating. There's just no accounting for taste is there? The only time I've ever consigned anything was with my children's baby stuff. It turned out to be very successful but that was a couple of decades ago. However, now I'd be rather intimidated taking in any of what I thought of as my "good" stuff fearing this kind of rejection. It's a real slog trying to recoup any money back for these items. I usually end up just donating my stuff to smaller curated charity shops, hoping they'll be easily sold and any money they make ends up helping a good cause at least.

I went to one consignment store near me last fall. I didn’t have anything with me, just asked about the conditions. They take 40% which is what I expected and give 60% in store credits. I didn’t like anything from the store and wasn’t interested. This is why I sell on Poshmark. It’s more labor intensive but gives real money once items are sold.

Disappointing and frustrating.

I had a similar experience once in Kingston in a consignment store. When I pressed on the reason, it was exactly what K. Period said -- the clientele were not interested in the slightly higher end items I'd brought and would not pay for them. Also, the sizes and cuts were apparently wrong. It was interesting, because she objected to some necklines on the things I had brought and as she said so, I realized that they were the kinds of necklines that would not have flattered her at all. Apparently she imagined all her customers shared her taste and her style preferences, and for all I know, she was right.

But I didn't shop there again.

That sounds very frustrating. Honestly, based on your description, it sounds like she isn't doing a great job of running the store or she wouldn't have that much stock. She also probably suspected she couldn't move your items because they were too upscale for her typical customer. How irritating to have had your time and energy wasted in that way, though.

I had my hat handed to me today by what I thought was an upscale consignment store . Or so it was when I last lived in that neighbourhood. I first tried to take my carefully folded and packed things in last weekend but was told they take goods Monday-Friday only. Back again today, circled the block a few times looking for parking, finally found a spot , and went in.

Packed to the rafters with stuff - bags hanging everywhere. All looking colorful and crazy, which kind of put me off, but that doesn't matter.

It was bought a year or two ago by a group of Ukrainian immigrant women, as it turns out, and they have a very different aesthetic , which is fine....but my things clearly did not hit the mark. The owner went through my box of purses, which included a vintage Prada, an almost brand new leather Coach special edition bag, a brand new nylon Baggu, a Madewell leather/canvas tote, a Banana Republic leather bag - all in MINT condition ...and my bag of clothing which included a few new-with-tags pieces from Aritizia, Free People, and Banana Republic. A pair of sandals that had been worn once. A Ralph Lauren Polo Bear t-shirt . Looked at it all dismissively, asked me if I had a receipt for the Prada bag (???!!!) and not even politely declined. "Nothing today", she said . I asked for some feedback, and she said " oh many decisions go into it".

A frustrating waste of valuable time . Also a funny reminder that your things are only as lovely as they are to you.
