My daughter tells me that the girls (as I refer to the large group in general, lol) go to a place that is actually a Canadian chain that gives you cash on the spot. I'm giving this one more go tomorrow morning and if that doesn't work out, I'm keeping the bags, and donating the rest. Maybe I'll try Poshmark but I'm resistant to packing up stuff and getting to the post office on someone else's schedule (the buyer). It's also NOT how I want to spend my precious days off work.

Oh gosh! Yes, so frustrating and disappointing. I've found consignment stores a bit snobby. It's hardly worth it to get your stuff all clean and ready, do the driving and the parking...only to have it bear so little satisfaction. I prefer the stores that offer either cash or trade up front. Even then, it's sometimes too much work!

I used to frequent Crossroads, a resale shop that was just blocks from my apartment when I lived in the city. My visiting son, then in his late 20's went to shop there, as they have a big men's section. So I gave him my giveaway bag of clothes to take along with him for cash or trade. When he returned they had taken everything from my bag !, and given him much to shop with. Even though I had sold there before, they were always picky,(tho not snobby!) they had never taken everything. And it sure made me wonder about ageism. Like as if these also very young salespeople were thinking, hey if this 60 year old lady owns these clothes, how cool can they really be?? But when presented by this cute, talkative young man...well...it's interesting.

I also like this that you said: Also a funny reminder that your things are only as lovely as they are to you. So true, even with some things I have given away to friends or relatives. I realized I had unrealistic expectations of what those items might mean to someone else, or the joy they might bring.

Oh JLP and SUZ your tales are so equally fascinating. There's just no accounting for taste is there? The only time I've ever consigned anything was with my children's baby stuff. It turned out to be very successful but that was a couple of decades ago. However, now I'd be rather intimidated taking in any of what I thought of as my "good" stuff fearing this kind of rejection. It's a real slog trying to recoup any money back for these items. I usually end up just donating my stuff to smaller curated charity shops, hoping they'll be easily sold and any money they make ends up helping a good cause at least.

I went to one consignment store near me last fall. I didn’t have anything with me, just asked about the conditions. They take 40% which is what I expected and give 60% in store credits. I didn’t like anything from the store and wasn’t interested. This is why I sell on Poshmark. It’s more labor intensive but gives real money once items are sold.

Disappointing and frustrating.

I had a similar experience once in Kingston in a consignment store. When I pressed on the reason, it was exactly what K. Period said -- the clientele were not interested in the slightly higher end items I'd brought and would not pay for them. Also, the sizes and cuts were apparently wrong. It was interesting, because she objected to some necklines on the things I had brought and as she said so, I realized that they were the kinds of necklines that would not have flattered her at all. Apparently she imagined all her customers shared her taste and her style preferences, and for all I know, she was right.

But I didn't shop there again.

That sounds very frustrating. Honestly, based on your description, it sounds like she isn't doing a great job of running the store or she wouldn't have that much stock. She also probably suspected she couldn't move your items because they were too upscale for her typical customer. How irritating to have had your time and energy wasted in that way, though.

I had my hat handed to me today by what I thought was an upscale consignment store . Or so it was when I last lived in that neighbourhood. I first tried to take my carefully folded and packed things in last weekend but was told they take goods Monday-Friday only. Back again today, circled the block a few times looking for parking, finally found a spot , and went in.

Packed to the rafters with stuff - bags hanging everywhere. All looking colorful and crazy, which kind of put me off, but that doesn't matter.

It was bought a year or two ago by a group of Ukrainian immigrant women, as it turns out, and they have a very different aesthetic , which is fine....but my things clearly did not hit the mark. The owner went through my box of purses, which included a vintage Prada, an almost brand new leather Coach special edition bag, a brand new nylon Baggu, a Madewell leather/canvas tote, a Banana Republic leather bag - all in MINT condition ...and my bag of clothing which included a few new-with-tags pieces from Aritizia, Free People, and Banana Republic. A pair of sandals that had been worn once. A Ralph Lauren Polo Bear t-shirt . Looked at it all dismissively, asked me if I had a receipt for the Prada bag (???!!!) and not even politely declined. "Nothing today", she said . I asked for some feedback, and she said " oh many decisions go into it".

A frustrating waste of valuable time . Also a funny reminder that your things are only as lovely as they are to you.
