I have an electric kettle - Breville - that I use every day. I boil water for our steel cut oats. I start them the night before, pouring the boiling water over the oats, and bringing them to a boil, then covering and turning off. I use the electric kettle for hot tea, also. In summer, though, I’m all about iced coffee, which I cold brew in a french press. We also have a Cuisinart automatic coffee maker, and a Krups coffee grinder, which my husband uses to make our morning coffee.

ETA: i also used the Breville this past winter to melt the ice on the large water bowl outside for birds.

I never realized the current was behind the difference in electric kettle usage. I do recall being surprised at how quickly they beat up in Europe. I don’t think an electric kettle (in the US) is necessarily faster than an electric stove. When I’ve had one, I’ve found it essential to have it make a noise when the water boils (used to have one that whistled just like a stovetop kettle). Without that, I’m likely to wander off and leave whatever pot I’m using to boil itself dry.

I think we don’t use electric kettles because for all that we do drink tea, we are not a ‘cuppa nation.’

But for sure I love my electric kettle. It is way fast. But I use it for making Maruchan noodles, lol.

Anne, not to get too off-track, but I have heard that the reason electric kettles are so much more prevalent in Europe and Australia is that you have higher voltage outlets, which makes them faster. In the US, electric kettles are much slower, so heating water on a stovetop is more common. (That being said, I boiled one too many stovetop kettles dry, so I do have an electric one.)

How did the stain removel turn out FashIntern? I'm glad you are unharmed yourself.

(on a side note it always amazes me how few people in the USA have an electric kettle, something seen in almost every house (and every hotel/motel) in Australia. We have a fancy coffee machine too and a grinder, since DH is very keen on his coffee, but prior to getting one we used what we, like Jane, call plungers)

You got some good stain suggestions — I generally do a quick pre-treat right after the spill with cold water and a little dish soap and it ends up coming out in the wash.

But I am on the French press train for life! We boil the water in a Breville pot that heats the water to precise temps for French press or various kinds of tea.

I used to have a French press. It’s probably still around here somewhere. If i was going to use it, I’d boil the water on the stove, in a teakettle that is probably part aluminum.

You know, I used to use a vintage Italian Mokka pot for a while in college, but it was so temperamental, and then someone scared me into never boiling anything in aluminum (maybe there's no science behind it, but it stuck with me), so I switched to a french press and never looked back. The french press is more peaceful coffee experience, I find.

Yep, Oxyclean. I also love The Laundress Stain Remover -- pricey, but no soaking required. Just scrub it into the stain and then launder as usual. I'm usually skeptical of cool new cleaning products, but all The Laundress products I've tried have been pretty great.

I second the vote for oxyclean for cotton/poly/viscose, but DON'T use it for any protein-based fibers like silk or wool. It'll happy break the fibers right down along with the stains.

Sitting at the table, eating my Raisin Bran, I suddenly felt liquid hitting my back and shoulder and heard an explosion in the kitchen. My sweet little Mokka pot had blown its top. The wall behind the stove was coated in coffee grounds, as was the dishwasher, across the kitchen. There was coffee spattered everywhere—bills on my desk, walls, food standing on the counter, clothes on the drying rack...

Wait, CLOTHES ON THE DRYING RACK? Yep. Coffee spattered on clothes on the drying rack is what this is all about. A couple of cotton items, which have been soaking in water ever since. I need laundry advice. What are your best tips for getting coffee stains out?

*Note: i later realized I’d forgotten the filter. The next day, Mr Mokka and I had a nice little cuppa together.
