Congratulations on all your lovely closet space. Back in the days when I actually had and wore shorts, I think I kept them in s dresser drawer rolled up.. Now I have one pair of board shorts, They are kept in a fabric box with swimminig stuff on a shelf in the closet. The box also holds my cover up and beach shoes.

Great to see it all come together, Christina! It's satisfying, and makes a new house feel more like a home.

Yes to hanging linen shorts if you have the space.

Janet - yes, that's what I'm thinking of doing with the shorts.

Glory, Sal - I do love having so many of my clothes hanging. And I don't really have to do seasonal switching on it very much either, if at all. Luxury!

Laurie- Yes, I am thinking a hanger with clips is the way to go, so I can hang multiples.

Rachy, avicennia - Isn't the wallpaper fun? It was pretty inexpensive, from Amazon. My secret with it is that I should really have had three rolls, to make it all line up, but instead I just used bits and pieces. In the back corner, as a result, nothing is lined up, but no one can see past the drawers and hanging clothes :P

FashIntern- I could see the appeal of a balcony with the bedroom! But I'm loving having the back screen door by my desk--when I'm not working outside! It makes me feel less confined after the misery of our previous small space during the pandemic.

Nikki - My husband wants his library to look like a potential murder scene out of an Agatha Christie novel. Nothing new looking at all, except his shelves of books and video games, but not visible technology, period-looking furniture, etc. The space is currently modern and white looking, and very blank, so it will take work.

I have only one pair of shorts that I finally wore the other day after four or five years of no wear. But I DO hang my jeans; otherwise they would be in a wrinkled and disorganized mess. I use hangers that come apart and stack like the ones I put in Finds. After wearing (or washing) I hang my pants/jeans in the bathroom and mist them to remove the wrinkles if they are clean enough to wear again. Then, they go back to the closet to join the stack of four or so.

What fun—for us to see, after all the work you put into making it happen. Funny about the outside door—whenever we finally move, I would rather have a balcony off my bedroom than off the living room, because of my old habit of stepping outside to comb my hair (except in winter). What will you keep in the storage ottoman, the bathing suits & non-daily gear?

I love a good closet organization post! Congratulations on such a good job here and wonderful that you have space to do it. It must be wonderful to unpack and sort things after your move. Great idea on switching the master bedroom around.
If I could hang all my clothes I would. I find I can organize and see everything much better. So if you have room I say yes to hanging your shorts.

How nice to have more closet space! Congrats!

I don’t typically hang shorts either, but I do hang my old Zara sarong shorts because they are crepe and a bit dressier — they kind of hang more like a skirt, so I put them on a skirt hanger and keep them in that section of the closet, but at the end so they don’t get too mixed in with the skirts and forgotten.

Hi everyone, I figured there may be some interest in this topic!

In my new home, I've taken over what is technically the master bedroom as my office. The other bedroom is about the same size, but doesn't have a door to our back yard. We figured we don't want people walking through our bedroom to get to the back. The other room is also quieter.

My office, technically being the master, as TWO closets, one being a walk-in. My husband also has a small walk-in closet in the other bedroom that's more than adequate to his needs.( And rest assured, he has our whole finished cellar as his office, which he eventually wants to make into a Victorian-style library.)

I have finally finished almost all the organizing and light renovation of the walk in closet to suit my needs. Nothing was customized to this closet, and I only started out with the hanging rails and the lower shelves. I did add peel-and-stick wallpaper on the visible wall, for fun. I plan to add a little storage ottoman to sit on, and my hamper will live in there too.

The other closet, a double-wide, didn't need much work. I just added some extra expandable shelves to the top of the existing shelves.

Here is how everything is divided up:

Walk-in: clothes with a shorter hang; sneakers and other non-sandal shoes in pre-bought racks; purses on shelves along the right (could be organized better); plastic shelves with clothes in the back; IKEA dresser with more clothes (happened to be exact right size for my needs here). Backs of doors have hooks for some less nice and currently in use purses.

Double-wide: Some coats/jackets and all long hanging clothes; sandals on backs of doors; shelves up top have misc items, mostly not clothes; the right side has a little cart with my weights and exercise things.

Deep storage (closet downstairs, not shown) - heavy winter clothes and holiday clothes; to be switched out with high summer clothes. I will need to do much less of a seasonal switch than previously. I still hope to decrease both categories by natural attrition--I have too much.

Hall Closet (not shown) - my most-used coats and jackets can live there permanently.

Things without permanent homes as yet:

Underthings, socks and pj's: These are in plastic bins in the actual bedroom, under the bed for now. I plan to put a pretty dresser in there for those items, as my husband doesn't need drawers at all and we have the space. Anyway, there is a pretty dresser I want that I have to wait and buy. Other things we need take precedence before I buy it, as it's an investment piece. I hope to buy late in the year or early next year.

Bathing suits and non-daily gear (hiking, etc) - I may add some more of those plastic shelves, as there is room. These could also go in a fabric box in the double-wide closet.

I do have one question - I don't believe shorts in general should hang, but I am thinking I might make an exception for linen shorts, and get a skirt hanger for those. What do you all think?
