Funny how what looks really messy in photos doesn't FEEL messy IRL.

Pics 1-3 are my bedroom closet. Off-season things are stored in plastic file boxes with sachets up top and in the nooks in the side. Also off to the R in the 2nd photo, unseen, is a tall set of plastic drawers.

Pics 4-5 are my off-season coats and shoes, in another closet.

Pic 6 is the coat closet with the family's shoes, coats, and bags. My purses are up top.

Envy those of you with walk-ins with room for everything in one place.

I love closet posts. Jayne, what great shoe storage! I admire all the organization.

My closet is organized, but too full. I hesitate to post pics, but I will share. Maybe this will nudge me into making needed improvements.

1 Overall view when you open closet door. The wide angle of the iPhone camera makes it look larger than it is. The left side is hubs' and the right side is mine.

2 Looking up, you can see the main challenge of the space, the dramatically angled ceiling, plus the wooden beam that runs through the closet, interrupting the space and blocking the light from reaching the back half. Also the dreadful light, which I can't wait to replace. You can see my workout and lounge gear piled on the top shelf near the door, and purses are on the shelf in the back half of the closet. I have an extra little shelf unit that allows me to pile flat bags like clutches and store bulkier bags above.

3 Hanging space, and shoes underneath. Would love to have a two-level hanging solution and better shoe storage.

4 Shelves in the back of the closet hold tees, sweaters, jeans, and shorts. There is a lot of inaccessible space in the corner, which I use to store out-of-season shoes in boxes. Out-of-season taller, bulkier boots are stored with stuffing in boxes in our downstairs (basement) closet.

5 The back of the closet door has a hanging rack I use for belts. I think it's time for a culling.

6 This bureau holds underwear, socks, hosiery, pajamas, and jewelry, courtesy of a compartment in the top -- I lifted the top for the photo so you can see the jewelry storage.

7 The accessory armoire. This piece held all my husband's clothes at our old house, which had teeny tiny closets. Now I use it for jewelry, hats, scarves, some sentimental things of my mom's, travel accessories, and my graphic tee collection. The drawer in the bottom holds out-of-season athletic gear and swimsuits. This could stand a clean out -- I have a very hard time getting rid of jewelry for some reason. In fact, the jewelry box visible in the left side of the armoire was my mother's, and it holds some of her old pieces I will never wear but can't bear to part with.

I was finally able to snap my closet pics last night. Here they are! I am a four season climate.

I have a 3 sided closet (the last side is the door and nothing is on it).

The two long sides have 47" bars with a shelf on top, all the space can be used. (photos 1 and 2)

The third side is almost 80" long, but half of the bar cannot be used because it is blocked by the shelves (photo #3).

#1-Spring/summer side, in pretty good shape. Two work dresses hiding in the back, followed by blazers, cardigans, tops and bottoms. The shelf has handbags, the pink container are scarves, and I see my t-shirt stack is getting a little too tall.

#2-Fall/winter side, needs some work. I plan to reorganize and purge once all my NAS items are in and decisions are made. Two handbags, again in their dustbags, on the shelf along with layering t-shirts and sweaters. The far right side are two shoes in boxes, one is special occasion shoe that is worn maybe once a year and the other is a summer work shoe, again not worn often.

#3-This is the unused shelf I mentioned earlier. I purposefully put a hanging chandelier (it's a small one, and brass
with pink crystals on it) so that I am not tempted to use the third
bar. I've thought about putting handbags on there, but truthfully I can't reach that top shelf unless I have a stool! And anything on the shelf interferes with the lighting.

#4-In a bottom corner are out of season shoes. This is mostly my boots and one pair of pumps again rarely worn, are in a plastic bag.

The rest of the floor is clear, except for a mirror leaning against the wall under the chandelier.

#5-Downstairs closet. Hubby and I share a shorerack and in season footwear goes on this. The rest of the closet is coats.

Additional items (gear, loungewear, undy things, socks) are stored in dressers in the bedroom.

Thanks for looking!

#1
-

This thread is so fun. You can get a feel for everyone's signatures and preferences so quickly this way. It's neat to be able to see the big-picture themes here like who wears bright colors vs muted, or who owns lots of heels, or a lot of pattern, etc.

I think it's a neat idea to look at that kind of broader stuff, because I know when I personally go shopping, I often fall into that trap of trying to buy new item Y just to match old item X; I bet if I instead asked myself what the general style and color scheme of my closet is, I'd get things that are way more versatile. Thanks everyone for helping me once again!

Great job, MaryK! I love the rainbow of jackets - so fab!

I am infinitely jealous of everyone's closet space! We live in a very old house so my closet is 24 inches wide (and currently without a door because the other one broke) and anything that can be folded goes into the two dressers. I therefore keep my out of season clothes in bins under the bed as well as a hallway closet. Accessories are hung on an over-the-door hanger. My husband has to keep his clothes in his office because we have so little clothing space. But he happens to have the "big" closet so it works out.

I took this about 6 yrs ago. Hardly any of the clothes would be the same but the organization is roughly the same. This is the biggest closet in the house. It's not exactly a walk-in closet. It was enlarged by the previous owners. Most of the older housing stock in this city don't have closets even this big.

I still use the inside of the doors for hanging space, with metal over the door hangers. The one you see in the picture now has pants and the opposite one has dresses. I still have shirts/tops on the right hand side top and below that I have jackets. In that middle piece that parallels the side rods, I have skirts.
Though lately, I have been pairing up outfits to go there and hang together.
They are on a rod that hangs from the upper rod. That upper central rod is empty in photo and now holds hangers of scarves and necklaces. The top shelf that runs along the back wall doesn't hold clothes but a few extra blankets.

At the back, paralleling the wall, you can see part of a small rolling rack.
I have recently been using that for storage of lightweight warmer weather coats. The part you can't see, on the left, is also double hung along the short side and I currently have winter items hanging there.

I have one of those cheapie slide under something shoe cases under the right side jackets. Not the same on the other side because the other side has a slanted floor owing to the staircase ceiling. I have a few hanging shoe files in a 2d tiny closet that otherwise holds some more winter things and coats. I have an armoire in the living room that is full of coats. :D I have a small bookcase in the sewing room that I use for handbag storage. It has some spillover to a tiny closet in there, with shelves.

ETA: The odd construction where you have to step into either the right cubicle or the left cubicle is owing to husband. I told him, years ago, that I wanted the long top rod moved up and second long rod below - so I could see everything at once. He wanted to surprise me so he worked in secret and only asked me one question, How long was my longest shirt or jacket. When I saw the end result, I was touched, angry, sad. If I stepped into one side - you can't walk the length of the closet because of that overbuilt center part - I couldn't see the garments in the other half. And because he didn't tell me what he was doing, he put a second rod going the short way in the center and hadn't considered that long tops or jacket also have a hanger neck, so that everything that was longer rested on the bottom row of hangers. So you couldn't move anything very well or things could snag.

I finally changed all this a half dozen years ago and double hung the side portions then.

Oh, look at the beautiful rainbow! I dream of the day I'll have a walk in closet with rainbows of my own. Meanwhile, thanks for letting me live vicariously through you.

Ha, FF has my situation down to a tee - a year ago I have moved from a generous space to a teeny-weeny apartment and I too am weeding through my stuff. All the time. Almost every washload results in something separated to a donation pile. Where does it all still come from???

So, not sharing anything yet, because my whole family shares one tiny space and several piles of unironed shirts mostly. I cringe several times a day when I have to search through things.

But, the good thing is that the lack of space is imposing a certain discipline and insights. For one, this is forcing me to really look at how I pick the clothes to wear (happiness factor, practicality) and I am becoming ruthless when something does not feel right - I don't even care any more why it does not work, I just don't want it around any more.

I wish I had a walk-in-closet!!! I have a smallish wardrobe and it's a wonder how I fit all I have in there. I guess IKEA really makes the most out of any little space.

PS: And I love all of your closets, so clean and organized!
