Ok. I did it. I removed some things my DH bought me. This afternoon I've been KonMari-ing my DD's toys and art supplies with her (she's 5). I just ran upstairs put the items in a bag before he gets home from work. I don't think he'll even notice. They're things I haven't worn in 2 years. Mostly clothes he bought me postpartum when I couldn't get out myself.

I love this type of thread! Maybe I'm inherently nosy, but I really enjoy seeing inside of people's closets (and houses and bags), so thank you Staysfit, for being willing to share your organization. I love inventories and numbers, too, so that's also fun to see.

Even if you're not completely where you want to be yet, it's obvious you're looking at your wardrobe thoughtfully and curating, rather than just collecting.

In terms of wear-logging, I've been finding it incredibly helpful to snap daily photos. The more I do it, the more I realize they don't need to be perfect, blog-worthy photos, just cellphone, mirror-snaps, with good enough lighting that I can tell which pieces I have on. From there, you can go back every once in a while and log on paper or spreadsheet, if you're so inclined. I know it's easier for me to do a bunch of logging at once than to try to do it every day.

Let your DD have the t-shirt!
Great job culling Staysfit.
I think it's definitely an attainable goal to restrict yourself to 1/2 the closet.
One approach to achieving the goal might be to make it happen right now. Yes, right now, put excess stuff in a box in the basement or something, temporarily, and see how you feel.

Kerry, I have kept a few items purchased by my DH also. I never want to hurt his feelings.

I had been saving an ugly tee from my alma mater, which is now where my DD goes to school. I have put it in the giveaway bin twice and she pulled it out and told me to keep it. This time I'm planning to remove all the giveaways before she gets here for a visit!!

Reading your post and checking out Marie Kondo (headed out today to buy the book - too impatient to wait for it at the library - over 900 holds!), I'm inspired to cull my closet more. I'm pretty good at culling at a regular rate - usually at the beginning of each season. But there are some things I hang onto because my husband bought them for me.

LynD., my section of the closet stays tidy. My DH is not tidy!

I have managed to edit my jeans somewhat. I removed 5 pairs of bootleg jeans and three pairs of corduroys that I rarely wear. I also found a pair of skinny jeans that were too skinny! That brought the number down to 31 pairs plus one pair of cords that I do wear. That can't be right! Unless my original count was way off! It must have been! That's funny! I have 31 pairs of jeans left hanging in my closet, and 16 pairs of pants in the giveaway pile. 9 are jeans, the rest are cords or slacks.

How embarrassing! I must have had too many to keep track of before!

SaraL, that's a great idea for my jeans. I already have them sorted by color and kind of by style. I admit to duplication of my favorite J Crew Matchstick Jeans. I counted 8 pairs in blue and one in white. I'm not sure I can part with any of those, but I have some boyfriend and skinny jeans that are easier to separate from!

Congratulations on your first progress. Looks like it's been a wonderful transformation. I've done my drawers recently with the Konmari folding method and love it. I've finally gotten a better handle on footwear with a floor to ceiling rack on the back wall of my closet, but have yet to solve my boot collection storage woes. I think I need floor to ceiling shelving and have picked a small wall in my room that would be perfect if DH approves ,fingers crossed as it would be the final storage solution to my wardrobe .

Great analysis! Can you sort your jeans into type? Like blue skinnies, black skinnies, white boyfriend, etc? That's what I recently did (although I only wear jeans on the weekends so don't have as many as you). Then I determined what number I wanted of each type and tried them on and only kept the best of that type. For example, I decided I only needed one pair of dark blue skinnies. I tried them all on and kept my favorite pair.

Aliona, I love your simple idea for tracking wears. I think I will try it. It will be very easy to implement and then at the end of any increment, I can go into the closet and if I wanted, I can document what is and isn't worn.

Suz, yes, editing tees and dresses is a great idea. I actually went back to my closet after I posted and was able to cull 12 dresses for the giveaway pile. That leaves me with 31 divided between four seasons. Once I started the process became easy. It was easy to see which fit my criteria and which did not. I am left with the dresses I have been wearing. There are four dresses that don't fit my color palette but are still in perfect condition and I wear them for specific occasions.. I kept them with the idea that if I find something in my palette that can serve the purpose they now serve, I will replace them. I wear my dresses and skirts frequently in the summer. As the weather gets cold, I switch to jeans. The clothing item I rarely wear is shorts. I have them, but mine are for running, and gardening, etc.

Maybe I will tackle tees next? I definitely plan to toss the bootleg jeans. I never wear them. That will eliminate four pairs, maybe five.

Maneera, thanks for the pictures of how you store your scarves. I will consider that as I continue my closet edit. I never thought of putting shoes on the shelf under my hanging clothes, but it's actually a great idea. I need to see if I can remember that they are there. It's a hard location to see.

Jackiec, I like the idea of putting my jeans into a bag and keeping it somewhere for a while before I give them away. That will give me a chance to see if I really miss them or not. I doubt it! How could I miss a pair when there are over 30! It would be nice to see that number cut in half. It would give me enough closet space to store my sweaters and the remainder of my shoes.

I've been tracking things for the past 18 months and it has proven very useful. I have a fairly minimal closet at present- 114 items (clothes + shoes +scarves) of which 23 are winter-only. It helps that I lead a reasonably casual life-style but I do have a fair amount of travel and evening social stuff. With this smallish # I have been really content, and do not have that harried what-am-I-going-to-wear feeling that I used to experience when I had a much larger (and probably less coordinated) closet. You might give some thought to tracking what you wear to see if those 43 dresses or all those tops get equal wear, or whether there are a few favorites that always get chosen while the rest languish and take up space (physically and mentally).

You've come so far in a year! Congratulations! Great analysis.

I slowly edited down my jeans collection this spring, and it felt great. I kept Marie Kondo in my head and really truly wondered if I loved each pair. Clearly not. It was a start. For me, I can't get rid of them point blank. I move them away first, and then when it's obvious I don't miss them, out they go.

You're doing a tremendous job with your wardrobe goals....Infact it's a lot like what I've been trying to do with my wardrobe. What's brilliant is that you know your goals and have a clearer idea of where you see your style going.

However, I'm with Suz on the fact that you might want to reduce your jeans and dresses collection. Infact, even for someone like me who collects dresses like no ones business (same pinch;) and wears them very often, 43 is too high a number. I have 25 and I find that even those are far too many, and for me summers last 8 months! Are you wearing all 43 of them? If you are actually, you're doing them true justice and there is no reason to worry. But if not, time too see which ones you prefer. I've noticed that I reach more often for only a handful of my dresses....something about them makes them my favourites, and I've started to track what 'these' features are. For example- I like knit or linen dresses with sleeves, an open neckline, and a drapey fit that could be shift style or fit and flare. Maybe you could do something similar?

Onto jeans. I have 18 pairs and I think those are already too much. I'm beginning to see a pattern in the jeans I reach out for more, and recommend you do the same.

Another thing that has helped me very much is tracking what I wear. I started a July SYC challenge where I also decided I will try to wear 5 different silhouettes through the week. I had too much variety and wanted to question - Do I like to wear so many different kind of things on an everyday basis or only like variety on weekends and while going out? Do I like trousers as much as I like jeans? Do I like skirts as much as dresses? And so on...

I will do an update soon on what all I found out, and all the things I discovered about how realistic my wardrobe really is. I may love my skirts as much as I love my dresses, but do I wear them as much? The answer is No....I prefer dresses to skirts, and that's the category I will pare down and not add to in the future (unless a particular must-have style needs replacing). I hope that makes sense?

Finally, with 75 pairs of shoes, I'm just as bad as you! If you do figure out where to cut down numbers after you've already culled shoes that don't fit well or are not comfortable, do let me know too!!!!!

I've learned a thing or two from your elaborate wardrobe organization details. Thank you so much for that! The only thing I do differently is the way I store scarves. I knot them on a hanger so I can see them all at a glance. The hanger goes in with my clothes (tops and dresses area) . If you could do something like that, you will have the shelves used for scarves in boxes to store some shoes. Just a suggestion!

Keep up the good work. And thanks again for this update! You're helping many of us here.....

Staysfit, you've made amazing progress in a year! I often think that editing a large closet can take just as much time and thought as building up a meagre closet. You are getting much closer to your dream closet.

Because I live in a climate of extremes like yours and do not have a walk in closet and also share with my husband (and our bed linens), I "switch out" my closet twice a year. We have a large hall closet next to the bedroom, and in there I store the out of season items on hangers, in a bin, and in a set of drawers. I put out of season footwear in a bin under our bed. This makes it much easier for me to see what I actually have to wear at any given time and offers a bit of salve to my OCD tendencies. {I have a problem with super light weight fabrics -- e.g. linen -- sitting beside heavy wools. Shudder. ;) Seasonal confusion being a fashion pet peeve of mine...}

For tracking wears, I found the old fashioned paper and pencil method worked the best. I just listed everything for that season on a bunch of papers and make a check mark each time I wore it. Not being a tracker by nature, I have only done this once -- last fall and winter -- but by doing it, I made some useful discoveries. It was interesting because I didn't expect it to be so valuable. After all, I have a fairly moderate closet (that looks even smaller due to the seasonal switch-outs) and already *knew* what I was wearing and not wearing. The thing is, I found out more about why I was wearing the things I chose. It made me more mindful of my real and specific needs and I think it's going to help my upcoming fall/ winter purchases.

In your situation, I might look at editing tees and dresses. If you don't wear tees much, you don't need that many (though it's always good to have a few on hand). And even if you wear dresses a lot and love them, 43 sounds like a lot -- how many times do you wear each of them per year? To put it into context, I have 5 summer dresses of varying levels of formality (and I love dresses in summer), along with 3 dedicated cooler weather dresses, and one special occasion only dress. Even if I wear each summer dress once per week in our summer, I only wear it about 8 to 10 times per year. As a matter of fact, I play favourites, wearing one or two of them far more often than the others. When I see this happening, I know it might be time to think about letting the less frequently worn ones go.

For denim, maybe tracking wears will be helpful. I have a lot of denim, too, because I wear jeans all the time. And I find it really hard to purge jeans for exactly that reason. Each pair of jeans is a favourite for something. I do think that I've been hanging on to a few pairs that are past their prime, though. I'll be doing a thorough edit when fall begins and I go back to wearing jeans more regularly.

Waving to you, Staysfit & Frannie B, my fellow veterans to be! SF, your closet looks brilliant. I love that you use all the exact same colour hangers, it really showcases and lets you compare items. I'm not a good person to offer ideas as I get overwhelmed by choice so my wardrobe feels too large at about half your size. But to share one 'simple' practice that I use for easily seeing when items don't get worn: I use the backward hanger trick for items that could see daily wear (ie not occasion or specialty items) and I put folded items inside out.

Shevia, I think purging what I don't wear after one season is a great idea as long as the weather is typical. This summer has not been nearly as hot as past summers (although it's getting there), so I haven't used as many of my linen items. I wouldn't want to purge them and then go through a hot summer and regret my action! (Of course, I'm not wearing all my tees, so some of them will definitely go.)

Ummlila, you're lucky not to share a closet. DH is not organized and doesn't fold. He tosses his clothing up on the shelf and it often hangs down into mine. You can see it in one of the pics. I tried to take my photos so his clothes were not showing but I was unable to eliminate everything! I am very patient! It's been 27 years, and I don't think it's going to change! :-)

I'm not trying to create a small wardrobe for the sake of it being small, but our closet is 15 feet long and my "half" is more like 3/4. I should be able to fit everything in there plus a dresser and two generous hall closets for coats, winter boots, and my mud hall cubbies (I only photographed the shoe/boot section but they are also very large).

I keep starting to track wears but every time I do, the system seems so cumbersome and time consuming, I end up dropping it. I need something remarkably simple. Maybe a paper and pencil check box form?

Celia, I think I do wear gray sweaters frequently! It's one of my neutrals. I still think there a couple of styles that I don't wear. I am hoping to add a second neutral, or maybe it would be a third because I have plenty of white, but I want to add eggplant as a dark neutral. I think it looks better on me than black, and it would go with everything in my wardrobe.

Frannieb, Happy YLF anniversary to you! I agree that finding one excellent item makes it easy to purge several that are mediocre. That is an excellent insight and one that I am counting on as I continue to selectively develop my wardrobe over the next few years.

Staysfit - we joined around the same time - I am coming on my one year annivesary with YLF and have had a similar journey.
I have gotten reduced so many horrible things out fo my closet - For me the Kondo method really helped change everything. Also taking pictures of myself in outfits.

You have done such an amazing job - you storage looks great and I know you shopped with a laser eye in the NAS.

No words of advice for continued curating just that it will happen and when you are ready to let things go you will. At the NAS I bought the AGL boots and this purchase inspired me to donate 5 pair of winter shoes in my wardrobe that I no longer wanted. I hadn't planned on it but using the Kon Marie method the AGL boots inspired some serious happiness which made me realize other shoes were not so out the went.

Wow, loved your explanation and all the work you are putting into it.
I wonder why do you feel the need to purge part of your grey sweaters. Sometimes you have multiples because they are something you wear all the time. Not trying to discourage you, just wondering.
I am actually trying to do a major overhaul on my wardrobe and holding areas and this post was really helpful. I would never had thought about using office supplies for the folded sweaters.

I am not one for a small wardrobe for the sake of small, but I have been editing out thr unworn items. I also have a lot of shoes. We don't wear shoes in the house so they are not in clothes closets. I'm glad I don't share a closet with DH as he is a terrible pack rat with many unworn clothes saved mostly for sentimental reasons.

Our mudroom has very large closets, most of which are dedicated to shoes, with the odd fondue pot, Halloween costume or soccer ball thrown in. I use metal shoe shelf racks from Amazon for current season wear shoes, and container store boxes for off season.

I don't have the patience to track wears, but I think that may be the only other winnowing method for you, since you're already so organized. Well, maybe in the winter if you wear cardigans at work, they could all live at the office and be put on after the coat omes off....

Impressive! Now that you know exactly where you have over bought in the past (white blouses, jeans) maybe you should focus on avoiding those sorts of items in the future and then start purging what you never wear after each season.

This is a long post so thank you in advance for reading if you chose to do so.

I became an active member of YLF around one year ago with a goal of honing down my bloated closet, defining my personal style and setting up strategies to prevent closet bloat from recurring.

Over the course of the year I have reduced the contents of my closet to less than half of what I used to own. I have revised my color scheme. I have come up with style adjectives and learned a lot about what does and does not work well with my body shape and type.

I am still going through an evolution in my closet, because it was impossible to reach all my goals in one year but I made excellent progress. My biggest unmet goal is to have all my clothing except my coats, underwear, and exercise gear fit in my half of the large walk in closet I share with my DH. I do not want to keep any of it in under the bed storage. With this goal in mind, I have continued to edit my belongings. Picture 14 is my most recent closet purge from this weekend. These are the items which no longer match my style adjectives, don't fit well, or are not in keeping with my color palette.

I did some item counts today. These counts are across seasons:
Long sleeve blouses - 20
Short sleeve blouses and camisoles - 32
Tee's long and short sleeve - 25
Dresses (all seasons) - 43
Skirts - 20
Toppers - (Includes cardigans, jean jackets, hoodies, vests, etc.) 40
Pullover Sweaters - 46
Shoes/Boots -46
Jeans - 34
Slacks - 8

My gear isn't included in the counts but I have revised the way I store my gear since I joined YLF. I use the Kondo method of folding and even though I am not a master folder, it has definitely helped me visualize all my clothing and I am wearing all of my exercise pants now; none are stuck in the bottom of a pile. (The drawer looks neater once my laundry is done and the drawer is full again). I am thinking about getting some bins for my shelves so I can similarly fold my tops and then just pull down the bins when I need them. I guess it would end up looking a bit like my winter sweater storage bins in picture 7 or 11. My current method of separating my shelves with office supply/magazine separator's is working well enough, but the piles can still fall to the side or backwards and once in a while an item gets lost in the back of my shelves. I suspect that the bins would hold more, but my goal isn't to cram more into my closet, it's to make it so I can fit everything and still see it all easily.

Shoe storage is always an issue, I have some hanging shoe racks which you can see next to my dresses in picture 8, and then there are the under the bed containers, one of which is in picture 6. I have two of them. Then I end up sticking shoes in the mud hall cubby shown in picture 13, under my dresses as in picture 5 (which also shows my boots), on some shelves under the window in the closet as in picture 9, and along the floor of my closet in front of my shelves. I really have shoes everywhere. Finally, I have my scarves stored in an over the door shoe organizer (Picture 4). I keep my square silk scarves folded and in their boxes on the shelf under my hanging garments.

I've identified the following places to target my editing:

1. Shoes - (Now that was obvious right!) I'm not sure it will really make things fit more easily in the closet, but 76 seems like a bit much. I'm hoping I just wear some out and they go by natural attrition. Right now I am keeping track of which shoes I don't wear and those are going to the purge pile at the end of the season.
2. Jeans - 34??! Aside from purging 4 bootcut jeans (which I hate) and maybe doing some art projects on two pairs by painting one, and trying Una's high-low hem on the other, I am not sure how to edit my jeans.
4. In picture 11 you can see that I have 6 or 7 heather gray cashmere sweaters. I'm not sure how to decide which to eliminate but I'm sure I don't need them all.
5. I still have more white blouses than any other color hanging in my closet. I have definitely added some color, but this is taking time. I hope to slowly add more color and move away from the white, keeping only 4-5 white tops instead of the large number I have now.
6. I am happy with my purses. I have most of them hanging from a hook in the closet (seen in pic 3). There isn't anything to purge here. My belts are hanging from a four ring storage hanger next to the purses. I could see adding some small thin colorful belts.
7. I have two piles of tee shirts but I don't wear them very often. In fact, I mostly wear dresses and skirts in the summer, so I have more than I need. I'm thinking the best solution is to let them dwindle by wearing out. My tee's seem to get holes in them easily, and to get stains more readily than other clothes. I actually wear cami tops more than tee's. I am sure I can get by with half the number I have now.
8. It sounds like I have a lot of toppers, but I included two blazers that I never wear, all my cardigans and hoodies, a stack of cropped beige cardigans that work well over a dress but I rarely wear now that I have my long cardigans, and of course my three jean jackets (white, blue and blue cropped). I'm not sure what to eliminate here. I have already put the beige toppers in a box to see if I will miss them.

Any other good storage ideas? Any additional places you can see for me to edit further?
