There is something you can do - but you will absolutely hate it at first: acclimatize. This is going to be kind of a long post while I explain...

I grew up in Florida, and lived all over the South - in the age of great A/C. So while I have always been used to the heat - I can really only take it in short bursts. But when we moved to Okinawa, our first summer there was one of the hottest they had had. Our house didn't have central A/C - just a couple of individual units (bedroom, tatami room), which ran constantly, but never really cooled things down. (82-85 degrees F) That first summertime electric bill was over $800 dollars American. We were beyond horrified at the prospect of 3-4 more months of this.

A friend of ours suggested acclimatizing. He and his wife had done it. In short, they eliminated as much air conditioning as they could from their lives. No AC in the car, no AC at home. He told us it took them about three weeks. Because of the very high humidity, they ran a dehumidifier every few days to get the moisture out of the house.

So we tried it. The only AC we used was at bedtime - but at a warmer temperature than we used to set it at. For daytime and riding in the car, we threw all the windows open. Work, shopping, etc. was unavoidable, but we lived without AC every chance we could.

The first week was wretched. I think I changed tops 3-4 times a day, and bottoms at least once. But it got easier over that three week period - and, just as our friend told us... we acclimatized. We were at a cookout about a month later, and it was in the 90's. Everyone around us looked ready to melt - and we were surprised to find we were barely sweating. So it really does work.

Our electric bill came waaaaaay down, and we didn't have any problems with molds because we ran a dehumidifier (it ran constantly the first 48 hours, then as it got the moisture out, we only had to run it every 2-3 days).

(Over the course of several years, the units were replaced with new, energy-efficient ones, and we would run the AC during the hottest part of the day, and at bedtime.)

I hope this helps!

I have no advice, but now I know I'm not the only person that thinks summer fashion with all the layers and jeans...boots...scarves....is hilarious, even up here in Michigan. Can't imagine it in Florida, yikes!

Ugh, I can so relate. It doesn't get -that- hot here (nor very humid), but I have very low heat-tolerance apparently. I often take a spare top to work so I can change there if I'm totally soaked (I walk or take the bus, no car). One thing I've found is that a tank top is much better at keeping myself cooled down that a t-shirt, even though the difference in the amount of body/skin covered isn't that great. Luckily I can dress as casual as I want for work, I can't imagine having to wear hose and/or suits in the summer, I don't think I could survive that.

I know it sounds counterintuitive but I also find light cotton leggings comfortable when the mercury goes rocketing past the century.
Another suggestion is to carry one of those lightweight towels that dry extra quickly. I believe you can buy them at camping stores.

Would love to - but the 35 min commute negates sharing or him biking. Most of what I need around town is within 2 miles, so driving 70 min twice a day to use the car seems overkill. I just need 2 months for the weather to simmer down

Not too much to add to the wise women here. I agree that sometimes being more covered up helps -- first to deflect the sun and second to absorb sweat. I detest dripping everywhere. I try and have a small thin muslin or linen tea towel or large handkerchief with me in the summer so I can take a moment to wipe down my face when I come in from outside. I hate trying to talk to someone with beads of sweat rolling down my face!

Oh the things I have to look forward to.......When it gets that hot here I can only wear linen or cotton. If I'm at all active (like moving) silk sticks to me & anything with poly feels too hot.

I agree with cb that sometimes a loose linen shirt with long sleeves & long linen pants are a cooler option - they absorb the moisture so no dripping & stop your body parts from sticking together :)

I cannot believe I forgot this ! I use it canoeing on hot days and for biking. I used one in 100 degree day barbecuing for the fourth. I love it and keep a small spray bottle to keep it wet. They are a pain to store, but for me, it has been so worth it. If you wear a hat, try a wet bandana under it. DUH !

Mo, if you can find a solution to this problem, I'm all ears. ;-)

This has been my ongoing problem every summer since having children, and I live in Vancouver, for cripe's sake. Not exactly known for its balmy weather. It's why summer is my style nadir. I think I've solved it now, but not in a way that's going to help you at all: find yourself inside an air-conditioned building during the day. ahahahaaa.

Seriously, though, I've started my fall classes and I wore normal clothes on MTW with no problem, even though Vancouver is enjoying freakishly warm weather for this time of year. Then yesterday, I didn't have class, was outside most of the day, was my usual summer sweaty hot mess.

As for where you could wear skinny jeans and boots in the summer? Pretty much all of the United Kingdom. ;-)

Jenny, that's funny, when I first moved to FL in '03 it was just south of Daytona, in New Smyrna Beach. I went shopping for pantyhose (can't remember why - oh, I think it was for my Gma's funeral) and there was NONE to be found. Not at the grocery store, not at Beall's department store. Nowhere. This is before hose became as passe as it is now. I was bewildered. Well, I'd moved there in January. Come April, I found out real fast why! lol
And I also had a non a/c car with pleather seats, back when I lived in Vegas. Torture I tell you, pure torture.

You're in Florida, right? In the late 80's I was living in Daytona Beach and worked at a department store. The humidity was just unbearable. My car had no air conditioning and it had these awful plastic seats. I don't even know what the material was pretending to be. I kept the driver's seat covered with a towel but it didn't do much good.

It was so hot in that car that I would start to sweat just looking at it. There was no shady parking at my apartment nor at the mall. At work we had to wear skirt, blouse, hose, and they preferred that we wear a jacket. I often had to just take all of my clothes with me and put them on in the bathroom once I got there. Standing in a tiny stall, trying to get pantyhose on was a total nightmare! LOL

That doesn't provide you much advice, eh? LOL but I can certainly relate to high summer in hot, humid Florida.

I totally hear you on this one. Our summer wasn't as hot as usual, but yeah. That's it.

Isis has a great suggestion with the panniers and/ or basket. A hat is also great. Wipes are a brilliant idea! And yes, if necessary -- a change of top in the bag!

As for styles and fabrics -- I would go with linen tees, silk sleeveless and airy fits, dresses and skirts in preference to shorts. It's the only way. And also? I think you might need a larger summer wardrobe. I often change at least twice a day in summer.

Those "summer capsules" with jeans in them are for places like Seattle and London. They have to be.

Welcome to my life. I think you've got it down, Mo. Airy dresses and sandals. Change when you get home, and wipe down at destinations.

I do recommend a rack on the back of your bike and a pannier; much cooler than a backpack. A front basket will also work as long as you are not carrying to much. If you have something heavy, like a bag of groceries, it will make the stearing wonky.

Here's a super cute clutch that fits on your bike:
http://www.etsy.com/listing/11.....ome_active

Thanks for all the tips. I continue to struggle but agree that a hat is going to be part of my bike ride attire next outing. Today I was aiming for trees for their shade. I also do want a basket of sorts. Just haven't gotten that far in gearing up yet. The bike is only a few days old.
My BF shorts I wore today just to the mall and back (less than 5 miles total) are so drenched I'm hanging them to dry. Seriously. Ewwww.

I have that kind of climate here. Bizarrely, I agree with Becky...more clothes can help, counterintuitive as it seems. Scarves to soak up the sweat (I freeze mine in the worst muggy monsoon weather) and thin cotton leggings, say. I also find more bodycon actually breathes better than loosey-goosey fits as it wicks and evaporates better when stretched flat. Though fabrication must be very light, muslin and lightest silks.

Linen is great in DRY heat but horrid in humid, I find...unless it is a knit...because woven linen simply isn't possible to render as fine as good cotton.

No words of wisdom here, just commiseration.

Our temps dropped last night after storms blew through. It's a blissful 77 now. Ahhhh! Wearing jeans feels like a treat.

And does your bike have a basket or rack? Strap your bag securely to that and skip the horrible bag-plastered-to-back experience. Nothing worse!

I know it's counter-intuitive, but sometimes wearing more clothing can actually feel cooler. Have you tried a hat and very lightweight full-length shirt and pants? 100+ degrees with humidity on top of that feels yucky in long sleeves, but the sun beating down on my head, shoulders, and arms makes me feel so much worse.

I used to walk to work a couple miles, not to mention run errands by foot, and I struggled with this too. The assumption for so many people is a/c indoors and car or transit to get somewhere, not being outside walking or riding a bike, which changes what you are comfortable in so much. I sometimes carried things to change into, but often did more layering type things like wearing a tank top and a skirt to walk in, and a shirt or cardigan to go on top once I got somewhere and cooled off a bit. I agree that natural fibers or wicking ones are so key, and the weight of fabrics makes a big difference, as does something that doesn't wrinkle easily - even if you're standing up, if you get sweaty and then cool off things can wrinkle on the body and look like you've run a marathon in them.

Prints! I am a big fan of prints to add pizazz to hot weather outfits, because accessories and layering is just not gonna happen when it is hot.

That would be summer here! I wish I had suggestions but this is so far from my life, I can only sympathize.
