Rachylou, for me the 3 sweaters are crucial! It's winter here now (which is a pretty mild winter), so I'm almost always wearing a layer, even indoors where heating is scarce. Realistically, people are looking at whatever I'm wearing on top the most and are thus most likely to remember whether I wore it before when they see me again, so in terms of variety from other people's perspective, I think that actually adding another layer would give me more bang for my buck than adding another of any other type of item. When I know I'm going to see people a second time (or more), I always make sure I'm wearing a different layer, even if everything else ends up being the same.

A second warm jacket would also have a HUGE pay-off in terms of variety - I'm wearing that teal fleece in every single picture of me outside on this trip! But packing another warm layer would also take up a ton of space...

Great report! Do you like having 3 sweaters too? Or would you be willing to do with even less? Just curious :)

I have a wide forefoot & narrow heels too! And I spend most of my time barefoot (at home), so the style might work for me. I'll have to visit my local REI and try some out.

Great post. This is how I always travel and I love your selection of items.

The teal jacket is an interesting one for me as I usually prefer to layer. I'll be in Africa the same time next year so I'll have to look more into how cold it gets.

I can only do a minimum of two pairs of shoes. My feet need a rest from day to day no matter how comfortable they are.

Kelly, I completely understand the fear of being forced to check a bag. I *think* that I could manage to shove both of my bags most of the way under the seat in front of me in a pinch, but luckily it hasn't come to that... yet (knock on wood!)

Parsley, I think footwear is the hardest part of packing light. I had this trip (and required versatility) in mind when I purchased each pair of shoes that came with me, and each went through a thorough vetting process at home before making the cut. It was kinda exhausting, but it eventually paid off, so hopefully your planning now will be worth it when you don't have to fret about footwear during your trip. I hope you have a wonderful time!

What an interesting post! I've been thinking about this topic a lot this week as I am away on vacay and still have half a suitcase of unworn clothes. About halfway through the week I decided to see what I could repeat wear and what could only be worn once, and when I get home I'm going to take notes/photos for a travel capsule. Other than having to pack for cool weather to start the week and warm weather to finish it, I should be able to use this capsule each year.

Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for posting this, Kate!
It's so good to hear how it can be done to travel so light.
I'm a dedicated carry-on only traveler, too, and this is helpful advice. I have a trip coming up that's for warm weather, and only for a week, so it should be relatively easy, but I've been agonizing about what to take. Footwear is sometimes my downfall.
Thanks for the inspiration!

Thanks, Kate! That's good to know. I really like how the tote zips into the pouch. It seems so convenient! I'm still evaluating carry ons but I would definitely get one of those bags for general use if not for short trips. Thanks for letting me know about the zipper. Right now I'm debating an actual carry on luggage versus just a carry on bag like yours or a LeSport Sac (My fear is having to check my carry on because there is no space in the overhead racks or under the seat.) I'd love to not have to check anything. Great tips on the cubes too. You are a wealth of information!

Kelly, I'm happy to help! Do be aware that the tote bag is really more of a beach tote than luggage. It does have a zipper at the top, but the fabric isn't sewn all the way around so even when it's zipped shut something could still fall out. That hasn't been a problem for using it as a carry on (and being able to slip small things in and out without unzipping it can be handy), but it definitely wouldn't keep everything secure if you needed to check it. As long as you're ok with that, I think it's pretty great! I also like that I can use it as a beach/picnic tote when I'm not using it to carry all my stuff.

For the packing cubes, I would play around with different sizes to see what fits your needs. I use the biggest one for pants and layers, and the long thin one for tops. The medium sized one fits my shoes, and then I change what's in the small one depending on the flight (sometimes it gets clean undergarments/loungewear, or sometimes I slip those into one of the bigger cubes and put dirty things in the small one). If I end up adding to my collection (either for trips with more clothes or so that my boyfriend can use them too), the long one and the biggest one would be my top priorities. Oh, and I got them in white, which isn't that transparent but does make it a bit easier to spot thing without unzipping if you have enough items with distinct colors.

Thanks for the info! I'm actually looking for a new carry on now so your post is especially helpful. I know many Fabbers use the Le Sport Sac Large Weekender and I was considering that even though one of the dimensions was an inch bigger than the airline specifies. Your bag looks great and the price point is much better too. Thank you for providing the links. The cubes look great too and I will likely invest in a set if those as well. Great to have input from a seasoned traveler.

Suz, finding gear that passes as regular clothes has certainly been a challenge, but those items have definitely paid off! I don't know why machine washable wool hasn't made it into the mainstream market yet and remains limited to outdoorsy brands (ibex, icebreaker, NAU, smartwool, etc.). Hopefully in the coming years there will be more options. I was actually tempted to bring an additional pair of booties on this trip, and finding just a couple pairs that will cover all bases and work with all of the different pants and skirts takes a lot of planning. I don’t have a lot of shoes at home, but I am certainly looking forward to having more variety when I return.

Kelly and Avicennia, my luggage situation is weird. Some of the airlines limit me to 7 kilos per carry on (15.4 lbs), so I went for the most lightweight luggage and cubes I could find. I also didn’t want to look like a backpacker, so no backpack. I’m using this tote for all of my clothes: http://www.chicobag.com/product/nomad-smoked-pearl and an old, not so cute messenger bag for all of my electronics and toiletries: http://www.backcountry.com/pat.....in-pat0701 When traveling I keep a smaller messenger bag inside my big messenger bag, which works as my daily purse http://www.chicobag.com/produc.....ple-potion I do miss my nice leather purses, but the purple bag is functional and I think makes me less of a mugging target than carrying a nice purse or a bigger laptop bag.

For packing cubes I have this set: http://shop.eaglecreek.com/pac.....set/d/1229 plus this longer one from the same line: http://shop.eaglecreek.com/pac.....1282_c_471
I love them! I also have a set of cute, small zippered bags from baggu for non-liquid toiletries: http://shopmodernlove.com/prod.....g-set-of-3 I also brought a couple of these ugly mesh bags for all my other random stuff http://www.amazon.com/Vaultz-S.....B001CDD0X8 They’re very functional, but I’ll probably try to bring something a bit cuter on future trips.

E, Merrells work really well for me. I have relatively wide toes and narrow
heels/ankles, and it I’ve had good luck with the Merrells. Both pairs of sneakers are also minimalist/barefoot shoes, so they don’t take up much space, but they also don’t have much cushioning and can be painful if you aren’t used to that.

Laura, I’m undecided about the third bottom for future trips, and am also surprised at how well I’ve managed with just two on this trip. I hand wash everything, however I try to get my pants and fleece (and whatever else happens to be dirty) into a proper washing machine at least once every 2 weeks. They’re tough to actually clean and then wring out by hand…

Elpgal, there’s a store here called The Space that sells items from lots of different South Africa designers, and I am hoping to buy a couple of dresses there to bring back with me to the US!

Claire, yes, as great as traveling light is, I will be happy to not have to factor in laundry time each morning once I’m back in the US! And to have a proper purse again, and to wear dresses and pencil skirts! Also, I think that packing for a week in a carry on is really not that different than packing for longer trip, the longer trip just involves more laundry!

What a great post! I loved reading it Kate; thank you so much for taking the time to type it all out. I admire your ability to pare down to the bare essentials. I always seem to regret one or two items I take on trips too...but it's been years since I've traveled for this long of a stretch internationally! I thought a week in London with only a carry on was a big accomplishment, ha! The great thing is, you really had a good sense of exactly what you needed, and that you could handle the laundry, although I'm sure you'll really enjoy the break from it when you return home.

Thanks for sharing; this is a fascinating read. Reminds me a little bit of what my friend who's a rock climber and backpacker takes on some of her trips.

I'm surprised that you haven't wanted a third bottom but I'm glad that your planning has worked out pretty well. Are you just hand washing everything in sinks, etc?

Thanks for sharing this Kate! I prefer packing very lightly too, so this was inspirational.

And you've made me think I should look into Merrell footwear and see if they work on my fussy feet!

That's impressive! I'm glad that you are posting while experiencing it--so it is fresh in your mind. I don't know that I could be as diligent about you with laundry but it is certainly inspiring and very cool to know that light packing is possible! Will you share what kind of carry on you are using? I'm going to look into those packing cubes too. Thanks for sharing.

Wow, this is capsule packing taken to a whole new level. Very streamlined and organized indeed. I'm glad it has worked out so well for you.

I really like your idea of "hacking" some of the gear articles to they look more like regular clothes -- it gives you more fashion as well as the functionality. Very smart move.

I am the opposite about footwear -- I do what people say never to do and take more. Yes, it takes up space and adds weight. But for me changes of footwear are key to long term comfort! Of course it depends on the kind of trip. I do a lot of trips with extensive city walking, where there are also some dressy events involved, so I need some options for that. If I were doing a trip like yours, I think I would probably aim to keep it to 3 (including one gear shoe), as you did.

Elizabeth, it's cool in S. Africa now -- not hot. They are opposite to us! But obviously, they do not get winter in the sense that we get winter here.

Thanks for the positive responses! I should also mention that while I generally try to pack light, I don't think that all trips (even much shorter ones) can be done THIS light, especially if laundry is an obstacle. It also helps that I'm not seeing the same people every day, so only my friends in each city (who are mostly travelers and other grad students) realize just how often I'm re-wearing things.

Em, great point! I should also mention that I'm using packing cubes to compress and compartimentalize my clothes so that they take up even less space. I also wear my bulkiest items on flights - the teal fleece jacket takes up about as much space as all of my tops!

Crutcher, this was my second trip. The first was 3.5 months in 2007, and I brought about 2 times as much stuff, plus bought a lot of things while I was here. I knew based on that trip (plus another 3.5 months in Europe) that I didn't want to lug around that much stuff again.

Alana, I'm doing surprisingly ok. After my two semesters abroad as an undergrad I loathed about half of the clothes I brought with me. This time I still like most of the clothes. I think that I have a MUCH better sense of what I like and what I look good in, and that makes a huge difference. That being said, I think that I will donate (and, if needed, toss) several of the items that I'm not in love with (especially the black pants) or are getting worn out (particularly the knit blazer) before I head back to the US. Other items are simply marvelous workhorses (especially the teal jacket, brown cardigan, and brown shirt) that I would replace with the exact same item if they were still available, even though I've worn them a lot both before and during this trip (jacket 194 times, cardigan 88 times, shirt 47 times).

Elizabeth, yes, it's winter here so the warmest it's been is about 80F and the coolest is about 30F. A different season would certainly merit some very different packing. Good point about footwear getting wet if I only had one pair, I hadn't considered that!

Sterling, yes, I have two bottoms but I might try for 3 if I do another trip. I wear the jeans more than the black pants, and do wear the black pants for the fancier stuff, but the black pants aren't too fancy to wear to casual stuff too. My third would probably be plum or maybe brown, but I'm already wearing so much brown on top... I don't think the third pair is necessary (I've done well with just 2 for over 2 months now), but they would definitely allow me to mix things up a bit more and have fewer wears between washings.

Beth, thank you! Yes, this is definitely a unique circumstance, I doubt I'll ever do anything quite like it again.

Joy, yes, electronics really do simplify things! I've got both a laptop and a kindle with me, and between the two I've certainly saved a lot of space. Digital music is also amazing compared to the cds I brought on vacations a decade ago.

I'm also happy to write about other aspects of the trip logistics and packing (makeup and toiletries, packing cubes and luggage, etc.) if anyone is interested.

Your packing choices are so impressive! I would never want to travel with more than a carryon, and have only done it once for 3 months. You are right. It is less stressful and freeing. I like your idea of three, although I usually take 3 bottoms but only wear 2. Having an iPad mini has allowed culling books, even travel books, which frees up space and weight. I didn't used to ever take boots but ankle boots have been my favorite footwear the last few years for travel. Wearing the same pieces over and over is sort of like having a uniform, only better because you can change things up. Thank you for posting this.

Wow, Kate. Kudos to you on a great capsule. I'm so impressed! I really enjoyed reading your post. I doubt that I'll have to do anything like your trip at this stage of my life, but I'm marking your post and filing it away anyway because you've given me some good ideas. Hope the last part of your research and your journey go well. I, too, look forward to hearing more from you.

I am beyond impressed with your capsule. It looks so well planned and thought out. The idea of threes makes perfect sense. You have two bottoms that you wear though? Is one for dressier occasions (workshops) and the second for field?

I look forward to future posts from you when you have time.

This is a great post Kate, thanks for sharing, and articulating your experience with your clothes so well. I can't imagine travelling around South Africa for 3 months... but still some great lessons learned!

I'm very surprised at what you have - maybe this just shows my ignorance. No shorts and only one short sleeved tee? is the weather there cool at this time of year, or do you need to dress like this for modesty or sun protection issues?

And in your musing for a future trip - are you suggesting you'd do it again with only one pair of footware? The boots? this might not be the best idea - I think ones feet need to "change it up" a bit. And if they got wet or something, you'd be scuppered.
