Thanks so much everyone for the encouragement and interest!

Greyscale, you and others have helped me work it out - the add-ons are needed to make an outfit of it (possibly the black and white contrast from yesterday made the basic more interesting on their own vs. today's dark denim).

However, to me a decent black top and jeans/pants will always "satisfice" (thanks MaryK for that useful term!) - when the layers come off, if a neighbour comes to the door unexpectedly, I still feel fine in the basic version. The black top will not show splashes of tomato sauce or wet marks from cleaning or whatever my daily routine inevitably (and literally!) throws at me. The layers are not needed to make it look 1/2 decent. The polish, at least, is still there with the black.

Anyways, I'll keep at it ... Greyscale, your capsule of shapes (vs. colors) has given me something to think about also ... my black top capsule at the moment has one t-shirt button-up, one crisp button-up, one long-sleeved crewneck, one long sleeved v-neck t, a fitted scoop neck (short sleeve) t, a more fluid scoop neck (short sleeved) t and a tank top. And a knit v-neck sweater. Imagine if that was all I needed! O Bliss!!

I just went back to read your project description. Great idea. Almost all my tops are black anyway, but you've made me think about what minimal capsule I could put together for travel - what are the tops I wear the most that go with the most bottoms. I think I figured it out: one v-neck tee, one scoop neck tee, one silk sleeveless button-down, and one loose knit sweater thing. Fun to think about.

Anyway, I like this outfit and yesterday's. They're both great casual basics that could fit into a lot of settings, and your add-ons turn them into full outfits.

Looks great with the jacket and shoes especially! Fun post idea and I agree there is no real need to "group" unless you just want to.

Similar formula, but this one is closer to a column of colour, and it looks perfect for a rainy or cloudy day to me, whereas I'd wear the other one in the sunshine.

Hi there,

Promise I'll start grouping these so I'm not posting this every day! But as I woke up pondering black shirts, I thought I'd go with the momentum.

The Basics: black gap essential v-neck t-shirt, dark-wash gap skinnies, a layered necklace I grabbed from Etsy that has my kiddies initially stamped on it.

The Add-ons: tan utility-style jacket (Suzy Shier a zillion years ago), a blue-gray and white striped scarf, navy Toms

Although this is the same formula as yesterday, I think it looks pretty different - very relaxed and blended.

thanks for looking and for everyone's positive feedback yesterday!
