You may like that brand. I can see the effort you took to find things in my palette! I know for a fact that Fleurette coats have long enough sleeves because I purchased two of them this year. One was the shorter pea coat style which I saw Angie had recommended after my purchase. I also purchased a maxi trench. Both the Fleurette coats are wool. I am not sure if they make trenches for spring and summer? I am looking for a trench that will suit for warmer weather. I live in a four season climate, with lots of precipitation, either rain, or snow, so there is need for a solidly performing trench year round. </p> <p>Kathie, teal also sounds like a wonderful color for a trench! The quality of the Hobbs sounds excellent. I keep coats and jackets a long time the finish is important.</p> <p>Angie, your endorsement of Hobbs colors means a lot! I have so many grey coats right now. I like them, because my hair is grey, but on a rainy day, I really like to wear something happy and colorful.</p> <p>Suz, the suggestion of Burberry is good. I have tried them. Like the London Fog, I need to size up a lot to make the sleeves work, and then the torso fit gets wonky. They work better in the winter, when I purposely size up so I can layer bulky sweaters and even a heavy wool blazer under my coat if needed and still move my arms comfortably. Even then, the torso is a bit large and would need tailoring. As soon as I size down for warmer weather, the sleeves get too short The Fleurette didn’t have that problem, I think it was a narrower cut, maybe only a little bit, but enough that it worked perfectly for my build. The sleeves on both the size 4 and 6 were perfect. The size 4 worked with light layers, but since I often wear multiple layers including sweaters, and or blazers, I kept the larger 6. If it was a Spring/Summer coat, the 4 would have been perfect. </p> <p>Jules, I am looking for something lighter in weight and probably cottony as well. I think classic is a solid approach, but I am also willing to look at avant-garde outer wear if it is something that will work for many years. I owned a Citron Creenstone trench and wore it for 10 years. It was not classic at all, but it seemed to meld with my modern classic wardrobe because the material was dressy and luxe, and the style a bit unusual so it didn’t date.</p> <p>La Pedestrienne, it was strangely warm and it rained yesterday, so I made due with my alumni umbrella! I make tons of emotional and impulsive purchases, and because of this, I believe my wardrobe is large. I am learning to be targeted to prevent my closet from bloating out of control. So, the need to get trench coats is a targeted goal. I know I need them. Whenever it rains, I struggle with figuring out what to use as outerwear. My plan allows for my emotional randomness, it just homes in on the designers that work best for me, as a reminder that I should not buy anything that is JFE, a placeholder, or even a simple essential (I have a hard time resisting a cashmere turtleneck in a good color). This year I am looking for excellent fit, comfort and style. There will need to be something special about a cashmere turtleneck if I am buying it in 2019, some extra design feature that makes it unique and worth adding to my already plush wardrobe. The cohesion in my wardrobe doesn’t come from my shopping plan as much as it comes from my color palette, the guidance of my style descriptors, knowing my essentials, and my tendency to choose items from the same level of dressiness. I have five main capsules, lingerie/pajamas, shoes/accessories, gear, workwear, and a formal/dressy capsule into which any of my purchases should fall. Items that would fall in between one of these get eliminated quickly. I wear the same thing on weekends as I do during the week, because my workplace is very casual. Some are "trenchier" than others, and I can't tell you how long the arms are, but clearly, there are trenches and trench-adjacent coats (like that K Spade!) that are not khaki, black, or navy out there. Definitely keep an eye on them as they usually come out with a few trenches each season, and at least one of them is usually in a more "unusual" colour (like the lilac one below). I want one that is long enough to work over my longest formal dresses, and another for my shorter dresses, which would be midi length, or maybe just below knee length. Ideally, I would have a third length, above or at knee length but I haven’t even found one, so three is asking a bit much! </p> <p>I have been “getting by” with an ill fitting heavily altered olive green London Fog maxi length trench coat with a zip out lining, and a Helly Hanson rain parka that is about knee length. I put them on if it’s raining, and as soon as I arrive indoors, I quickly yank them off, and hope no one saw me because they make me feel so unfab. To be fair, I like the Helly Hansen if I am wearing very casual clothing, on weekends, but it isn’t really my favorite look for my professional style. It isn’t dressy enough.</p> <p>My shopping difficulties have been fit and color. Trenches seem come in Black or Tan. I don’t wear either color. Dark navy is a third less popular option, but isn’t really my favorite color either. I would love something that’s light grey, charcoal, for a neutral, or better yet a color like sky blue, fuschia, or maybe a medium coral pink. Why are trenches so dull? I like a happy color especially on a cloudy day. The fit issues involve my long arms and broad shoulders paired with narrow torso. If I buy the small size that fits everywhere else, the sleeves are typically too short. When the shoulders and sleeves fit, the torso is too large and shapeless. Highly tailored items like trenches look best if the fit works almost perfectly from the start. Tailoring is possible, but when there are major flaws, the fit gets wonky, as it did with my London Fog which had too short sleeves and too wide a torso. I haven’t found an off the rack trench that fits well yet, but I suspect I need to increase the price I’m willing to spend. Recently, I discovered a designer who’s items seem to be a perfect fit for my body type. I have been watchful to see if she has any trenches I like. I am not always in love with everything she produces, but if I like an item, I know it will fit and feel great. (Rachel Comey). </p> <p>Speaking of designers that work for you. There are some brands and designers that seem to always work for me, and I love the way I feel when I wear their clothes or shoes. These currently include, Donald Pliner, Aquatalia, and Beautifeel shoes, Rachel Comey, Rag &amp;Bone, J Brand Jeans (especially Carolinas and Maria’s), Sea, VB, Rebecca Taylor, Nordstrom Signature. So, for 2019, my shopping goals are to buy two trenches, any Rachel Comey items that strike my fancy and fit my style descriptors and palette, and to judiciously refresh my wardrobe from my other favorite designers as well. I don’t really need anything other than the trenches, and some exercise gear replacements, so anything else will be purchased to keep my style fresh. Hopefully that will make for a budget conscious and fun shopping year in 2019. </p>
