Look at the puppies!<br /><br />This is a very interesting question to me. I try to accessorize my dog but she just won't have it! We call her Hall Monitor Lily. That is her below. She sucks on lemons and her hobby is telling whipper snappers to keep off the grass. (You can see her in the pic looking for someone to tell off.) She is also just so butch. I tried for a while to find a bow collar that would work on her and my bf was all, <i>That is just so wrong</i>.<br /><br />On the other hand, she is the ultimate identity accessory. It's hard to be a preppy without a dog. Where will you get the dog hair for your sweaters, jackets, and sofa? Who will scratch up the persian carpet? It is also equally hard to be a hipster without a butch, tan mutt. What will you do with that hand-tooled <a href="http://pacocollars.com/" rel="nofollow">Paco collar</a>?<br /><br />Mind you tho, I was thinking more along the lines of a king charles. And then all these rescue groups were totally acting sketchy, failing to show up for appointments and stuff, and I was getting depressed. And my bf found on the off-hand an adoption event and got me to go (I was seriously moping at that point)... And Hall Monitor Lily chose us. Then I nabbed her and ran, same day. Leopard print collars, leashes, bedding, etc. And my black dog with the gold and tan undercoat looks amazing on my brown sofa with black and gold animal print pillows. :-)<br /><br />I used to dye my hair red, and at the time I had a reddish chow who was the absolute love of my life. We were visiting a redheaded friend who lived with an elderly orange cat. When Rosebud first encountered the cat, there was some growling and some hairs standing on end from both parties. My redheaded friend, in an attempt to calm everyone down, said "Everybody's cool...everybody's orange..." I loved that. Until that point, I hadn't noticed that everyone was, in fact, orange.&nbsp;<br /><br />I also think of my pets as excellent ambassadors, and good "wingmen" when I'm out meeting new people. And I am far more likely to approach someone and start a conversation if they have a dog with them. I just can't help it. I see a dog and I want to pet it. I met a local greyhound named Ruby at a bar last Summer. Then, in the Fall following a Halloween parade, I saw Ruby again and said hello to her. Her owners expressed amusement that Ruby was apparently creating friendships with people in town that they didn't even know about. To this day, I don't know the owners' names. In part. I was going through a rough time in my life and a friend would throw me her Borzoi, one of Baby's uncles, and say, "Could you take Joel on a walk? He really needs it." This became my therapy. My route took me past a black glass building where I could see myself with Joel&nbsp;perfectly reflected. That was therapy too--I'd stand a little straighter and feel a little happier to see myself part of such a magnificent duo. Joel's black and white markings always coordinated perfectly with whatever I was wearing.<br /><br />When Joel's brother became a daddy, and I was offered a puppy, I had a lot of questions about the wisdom of getting a big strange dog--but I knew we would look great together!<br /><br />Baby became the most amazing dog I ever had. But I do love getting to take walks with such a striking animal, and color coordinated to boot. People on the forum joke about Baby being my accessory, and I do too, but he actually is!<br /><br />My daughter is a fair-skinned blue-eyed redhead, and she has a cream colored cat with tawny points and blue eyes. &nbsp;Coincidence?<br /><br />So I want to ask two things: do you think of your pet as an accessory? And does your pet's coloring echo or complement yours?<br /><br />Baby is the puppy on the right.
