Yes Karen13, non gear coats definitely do elevate an outfit! The funny thing is that I've always owned a few non-gear coats, but lately in the sea of puffers I sometimes feel like I'm wearing an "old-fashioned wool coat" instead of a "modern trendy puffer". The grass is always greener I suppose.

Jaileen no sleeve alterations yet on the camel coat. I kind of like the folded/cuffed look.

Thanks Suz! Most of my other winter coats are either kind of plain/classic ones or utilitarian...you have a better collection! You are so right that it's really worth it despite the cost etc.

kkards, yes Angie's recommendations are always worth a look. She has such a great eye for so many styles and possibilities.

DonnaF thanks for the reminder on Nordstrom alterations. I'm reluctant to use them becuaes they bungled some relativly simple alterations on a sleeveless shell a few years ago. I recently found a tailor that has done a good job with shortening sleeves on two other coats.

Suz, challenge accepted! In fact I've already started playing around with some ideas in this capsule...https://youlookfab.com/finds/c.....ction=5134

Thanks shevia!

Chris, also --- I hear you on pumpkin feeling inherently like a "fall" colour. But here is my spring challenge to you -- try it with navy and white, which are already well represented in your closet, and which feel inherently "spring-like" in themselves. Try also with light grey and white, treating it the way you might treat a cognac accessory. It would work with purples, too, but I know you're keeping away from those now. But maybe a scarf that combines that and other spring-like colours -- maybe even turquoise? I think you'll find that with the right underlayers it will work for "cool" spring (i.e. April) just as it worked for the fall. It's so flattering on you, you need every excuse to wear it.

I love both coats on you!

You know with a Nordstrom credit or debit card you get a minimum of $100 in alterations per calendar year. Shirt/dress sleeves are $20 but lined sleeves are probably more. You pay, and then get the alteration amount in a Nordstrom Note. Some alterations on full price items are totally complementary as are repairs on items that have fallen apart like that one thread. . .The alterations benefit means I will look at non-Petite dresses for the length, and then get the sleeves shortened.

great coats...and i bet the nutmeg coat gets a lot of wear as winter transitions to spring....
and yes to trying to shop in person....so many things just look so different IRL...both for the better, and sometime for the worse...i'll also add, watch for Angie's recomendations, often there's something i would have overlooked but her execellant eye has helped with some great finds.

These coats are both gorgeous on you. I know just what you mean about "luxurious" outerwear and honestly, I have come to view it as a necessity, if that's not too big an oxymoron. A necessity for those in our climate who spend so much time in outerwear, at least.

My favourite winter coats all feel a bit "luxe" (even if they were not expensive).

I have a cranberry red Hilary Radley coat that has alpaca in the mix -- it is so warm and light and such a rich cranberry red with an exaggerated collar -- I feel like a princess in it. (Sorry, no photo, as it is my oldest coat but I can't imagine it going out of style, either, so expect to have it for at least another 7 years.)

My J. Crew lilac coat was very inexpensive (I got it on crazy sale). I probably would not have bought it at full price since it seemed like such an "impractical" colour. But it's the fun colour that makes it feel luxurious!

My Danier mixed media coat feels luxe because of its dramatic cut and collar and the soft leather sleeves.

My new parka feels luxe because of the fur on its hood and its fine construction.

Living in our climate, I think we deserve coats that spark joy. And your coats look absolutely amazing on you!!! You could not have picked better.

I'm glad they both work for you. The colors are superb. Did you alter the sleeves on the camel coat?

I looked at my Nordstrom account, and I returned so many things. I don't have one nearby. The nearest is about 100 miles away, plus I have to go over a mountain pass. I feel guilty ordering and returning so much.

I love both of these! I went for years with only using gear coats. Last year YFL inspired me to buy several casual but non-gear jackets and I am amazed at how much they elevate an outfit.

Christ I love both coats on you!! Gorgeous with your coloring and stellar fit. Try the nutmeg in cold spring weather but with a sheer chiffon scarf. I find floaty chiffon can be surprisingly snug but adds a softness that a wool, cashmere would not have. I wear wool toppers well into early cold summer. But I lighten them up with b&w chiffon scarf - see what you think. I am in NJ, we did have unseasonable warm indian summer till november, but usually a coat of that type would work september mid-late through early december and well into early spring when you still need a coat but you just feel spring is here and a puffer seems too much!! Both gorgeous!! Enjoy them!!

Delurked I'm totally with you on B&M vs. Online. One really has to do both, and least for me and for you.

I have to shop online almost exclusively for shoes, and most of the time for petite sizing. I was just commenting that with NAS in particular I was surprised at how important popping into the store was.

I guess the answer is to keep all options open!

Love that camel color on you. Sadly, I have no Nordstrom to shop, but I have definitely noticed I pick out very different things in store vs online. It’s my goal to stick more to bricks and mortar when I can. I do better with fit and I’m tired of returns. However, it’s hard to leave out online entirely because I often look for size 10.5 shoes now and longs/talls in bottoms. Glad you had a surprisingly good NAS.

My two best purchases of the year turned out to be two coats, the first new coats I had bought in several years. As NAS began I had just returned from a wonderful summer vacation to France and Spain where my travel capsule felt boring and too casual. I did not want to think about fall/winter clothes, and had no plans for NAS, no shopping list and was in a bit of a wardrobe funk. Then the infectious and fun NAS frenzy on YLF convinced me to participate “a little”, at least by watching the finds go by.

I did have a dressy fall coat on my general wish list, and had wanted a camel coat for years. I ended up finding BOTH, much to my surprise! I would not have noticed either coat if I had only shopped NAS online, because what captured my attention was the color and texture of these coats IRL. The coats have many similarities: slightly flared straight shapes (like A-line) with just two fasteners in the front, knee length, unlined “double face” wool, sleeves a bit too long. available in petite sizes, and warm tones that work well with the rest of my wardrobe and my coloring. They both make me feel a bit more sophisticated than normal, which has been a difficult-to-achieve wardrobe aspiration for me.

The first one is a nutmeg color, with knit sleeves, in a mid-weight suitable for fall in my climate. I spotted it on a rack of regular sizes at Nordstrom. After trying it on I determined that a petite size would be better. During NAS I watched for the petite sizes to be restocked and with the stalking help of Suz and KL was able to order the right size. (can't thank you two enough!) Only after I bought it did I notice that it was a top pick This coat is a gorgeous color and I have started adding other pieces to my wardrobe in this color. October was unusually warm this year so I started wearing it in November, and by December it was too cold to wear it any more. It feels odd to have a coat that I can only wear for one month of the year, but next year could be different, and it’s a fairly classic style so it will be good for several years. Maybe I can find ways to wear it in spring, but in my mind it’s really a fall color. It’s just a bit too long to work as an indoor topper on me. I folded back the too-long sleeves and that’s fine, I don’t plan to think about alterations. I have gotten several compliments on it even with just a few wears. It really adds a lot of polish to a basic outfit of jeans, sweater, ankle boots.

The camel one is a heavier weight, suitable for "regular" winter in my climate, with a shearling collar. This coat was sitting by itself on a mixed rack. It was probably a return from a NAS online order, since my local Nordstrom stores almost never carry petite coats. I saw it on my 2nd store visit during NAS, tried it on, it was the right size, and that was that. It’s definitely a winter coat but not for super cold days. It feels very luxurious, and the collar feels warm around my face even though it does not literally touch my face. There is plenty of room to layer a jacket or warmer sweater underneath. I have winter accessories that work with this in cream and light blue and am looking for the just the right scarf and hat in either burgundy or navy. I folded the sleeves back on this too and like the cuffed effect although I might get them shortened at some point. I’m looking forward to wearing this coat more this winter when we return to normal temperatures. (We're in a deep freeze right now) I’ve gotten compliments on his one too!

There are two morals to this story:

Do visit stores if you can during NAS, even if shopping online, and do it more than once!

It's been a long time since I described any clothing as "feeling luxurious" , and I really like that feeling. Something to keep in mind.

one photo below of the camel coat. The proportions are off and I look way shorter than I really am, even though I am very short!
