SF, cool idea, but probably beyond our DIY capabilities. We are sort of beginners - I just bought us Home Repair for Dummies! Those Ikea hacks are always pretty cool, though. I think my husband intends to hire a designer to design and build in bookshelves. A big project, which is why we didn't embark on it now, when everything was stripped down to the studs.

Side note - I love Mucha! I am trying to find a spot in my office for a print of one of Mucha's Sarah Bernhardt posters.

Idk if you/your husband are into diy, but Apartment Therapy has several really good faux built-in bookcase and wardrobe projects on it. This one doesn’t have much detail on the AT site, but they link to the blog of the person who did it https://andchristina.com/befor.....sing-room/

Here are a couple others I like. They both happen to use IKEA Billy shelves.

Everything this guy does is amazing

I hope 2022 is a nice calm year for you. You had so much to deal with in 2021. I love that DH wants a good old fashioned library as his personal den. I am always wistful when I see pictures of the library at Oxford university.

Stagiaire Fash- thank you, we will! We have already been using it to play VR games (lots more space). It needs lots furniture over time, and his office equipment needs to be moved down there. At least all the stuff we rescued can be stored there ASAP.

rachylou - I didn't say. It's stone tile flooring. The upper floor is wood, and that would have been toast.

Suz - my poor kitty! She had infected teeth that needed to come out during the lockdown, then her vet had a massive waiting list and I had to eventually go elsewhere. That all unlocked some kind of virus she has and I was told it won't go away completely.

Janet - yes, I'm sure the price would have been almost double! The builders chose good flooring for a basement. I'm sure it was in case of the kind of groundwater flooding one would usually expect to have. We are pleased with it, and stone flooring is fine for my husband's future plans--he has a bunch of heirloom rugs we did manage to save that will go back in there too.

Thank you, slim cat and Angie! My poor kitty. I am trying to alleviate her symptoms but I don't think we will ever entirely stop her sneezing.

After an hour of scrubbing the walls last week, I decided vinyl wallpaper or tile for the bathroom will be easier to clean. The paint in my office is glossy, so it's easier. We will make the same choice in the bedroom, though she is more likely to sneeze on the duvet cover there than the walls. That is washable, of course.

Lisa - fortunately, the flooring is the one element of the space that completely survived the flood. Our contractors told us that we were very fortunate that this type of flooring was chosen. It was put in before we bought the place. We were very happy it survived, because we like it and keeping it saved us a ton.

Helena - I think my husband wants to make it all dark wood eventually! I don't think the space lends itself much to what he wants, but he's determined and it's up to him. We looked at apartments older buildings that would look better with vintage decor, but there was something awkward about how the space was laid out in each one. This is probably because brownstones were originally single-family and now are generally are 3-4 family. So he will have to add bookshelves, molding, a faux fireplace, etc etc. He wants it to look like a library where he could get murdered in an Agatha Christie book, basically.

After over 4.5 months, my finished basement has been restored from the over 4 feet of flood water we got on September 1st. Thee space is reopened and we have half our house back. Pics below, including the cats exploring. They are very happy to have this piece of territory back.

We rescued some things from the flooding that we can now put back down there, and people have been giving us books and boards games, so we are slowly rebuilding those collections. Both collections were large so it will take time.

The basement is laundry, storage and the large space will eventually be my husband's library. He will go back to using it as his office in the meantime. He wants it to look Victorian/Edwardian... not just inspired, but as literal as he can make it. It will need significant renovation but he's going to hold off for a few years. Among other things, he wants built-in bookshelves. We just wanted it back as it was for now.

Our dryer survived the flood (floated), kind of. It turns on but doesn't seem to dry. We need to explore if it can be repaired, or else replace it when we order the washer.

I can now re-focus on the areas of the upstairs I wanted to decorate. My office is about done, so the bathroom, hallway and bedroom are next. I want to put in some peel and stick wallpaper or tile on at least the bottom halves of walls of the bathroom and hallway, because one of my cats is constantly sneezing all over the white paint (her condition is harmless but chronic at this point). The resulting stains can be removed but by doing so, we will rub away the paint over time. I want to paint the whole bedroom. I've ordered pain chips and wallpaper swatches. Very exiting!
