First, I LOVE the gown and it will be perfect for the Indian wedding. If you do keep it white, you probably shouldn't wear it to a US wedding, as it's considered rude for anyone but the bride to wear white. In one of your posts, you mentioned dying it navy. That would really work! I still feel funny about wearing black to a wedding. It looks like you have warm coloring, so how about dying it a pretty coral color after the wedding?

Wow, that was a lucky, amazing find! I can't wait to see pictures of you in it! I vote against black, because I think that would wind up looking faded. A color would be nice, though, if they think a dye would take. Have fun in India!

What a score -- a super-expensive, super-flattering dress for a bare-bones price!

Hope you have a great visit and that there are some SERIOUS photos of you in this dress and your accessories as you will be stunning.

If your cousin thinks dying the dress is a go I am also voting for color-color -- you handle brighter shades so well and I think you might find that type of shade very summer wedding/summer party given the silk/chiffon combination. [I can see the appeal of a more traditional deep neutral, though.]

Does your dress have multiple fiber types? Different fibers often turn slightly different shades. Silk takes dye well, so hopefully the chiffon is silk chiffon and the thread is also silk. As you mentioned, your cousin is a designer and should be able to do a swatch test/get it done properly.

I'm going to vote for a hot pink, because I know how fabulous that color would look on you. If you want to play it safe, go for a red or a burgundy. I'm voting against black because black dresses are easy to find and it's a hard color to dye.

Voting for the kundan earrings as well - you're going to look gorgeous!

Good goddess! What a prize, Sona! Congratulations and great envy!

I think midnight blue, emerald and maybe even a plummy, purple-y wine would all be fabulously glamorous and versatile colours, while still showing off the beauty of those ruffles. I think black might camouflage them a bit? Or, if you like the colour, a deep flaming orange...

You're going to look SO beautiful!

Have a great visit.

Sona, you'll definitely have more functions to wear it to if it's non white! You're smart to dye it, actually! Honestly, white to a Western wedding is still a no-no, although people do tempt fate by wearing all shades of cream and off-white. It's just rude IMHO! With my "horrors - you're going to DYE it?!" comment, I just meant make sure you take it to a reputable person who knows how to dye it and will treat it delicately. I'm sure it will work out well! Do you have a selection of top quality dye colours to look at and choose from? Can't wait to see the finished product - but that's secondary to the fab upcoming wedding and travel escapades!

Sona,

I doubt you could wear white to a Western wedding. Maybe to another non-traditional Indian wedding....but how many of those do you go to?

You'll get much more use out of it if you can dye it another color....

If you figure out a creative way to accessorize it with non-white items so it doesn't look bridal, that might work. Like a colored belt/sash or a wrap/bolero?

OMG, your planned trip sounds divine! Can't wait to see pics!

I cringed a little to read you're going to dye the gown...hopefully no one screws it up! What a beauty it is. If you DO decide to dye...black or navy are safe choices, if you enjoy wearing dark colours to formal events. It's such a romantic and floaty-looking dress, that I suppose the dark colours would provide even more sophistication...?! I'm not sure black would do it justice, though. Maybe red or a jewel tone, as others have suggested. Va-va-voom!

THAT. DRESS. IS. AMAZING!!! Sona, you will be ridiculously stunning in this! I also love the idea of a dark navy for the dye colour. I think navy would be even more flattering with your skin and hair colour than black. The earrings are also stunning - you're going to be gorgeous!

@CC: first trip to India since joining YLF. plan to do loads of shopping. I am also going to be picking out a kurti top for our Vicki and you all are going to have to help me pick something out for Angie (Ssssssssh!). I plan to post pics as often as I can- verizon told me as long as I used wifi on my iphone- uploading pics and the like should be free. The wedding will be traditional, the event I plan to wear this to is a cocktail party the day after. This could pass for a wedding gown but its more likely to be a bridesmaid gown I think? I don't know I fell in love with it when I wore it so decided I must make this happen!!
P.S: Anyone who wants me to buy them a kurti ( around$10-15 usually) let me know your bust size and color preferences.

Oh Sona! That's SO exciting! Your trip and the dress! An Indian wedding where the bride wears red is the perfect place to wear this! Is it actually a Western wedding gown or just a white dress? Either way it's beautiful and that cascading ruffle detail will be perfect for your figure! I hope you have a blast, and what luck having such a great consignment store nearby.

For dyeing, have you considered a bright like emerald, orange or hot pink? You do look fabulous in the vibrant colors! I'm sure you'd beautiful in navy or black as well.

I am planning to wear it with red heels and a red pashmina wrap to give it a little color. My cousin is a pretty well established designer in Mumbai and should be able to let me know if it is dye-able. Its a combination of silk and chiffon. I love the idea of a navy blue. Hmmmm.

Ooh! Can't wait for pics of you in it! Are you OK wearing white to a desi wedding? Or are you having it dyed before the wedding? What material is the dress and does it have a lining? Can you sneak it out of the house to a local dry cleaner to see if dyeing it is possible? I'd worry that you'd get to India and they'll say "Hahn ji! No problem!" but end up ruining it....

Can you tell I'm still bitter about past tailoring experiences in India?!

Assuming you can dye it and the color will hold, I'd go for a deep blue or burgundy. I think those colors would look fabulous with your coloring. And black is always classic.

Good luck and have a fabulous trip!

That dress is KILLER. Absolutely amazing. It seems sad to dye it but I see what you mean about getting mileage out of it....black would be the obvious choice. It is gorgeous.

We leave this weekend to go to India for my cousins wedding. I have had a lot to pack- we are also going to Goa- a beach city for a few days so needed casual capsule, beach capsule, evenings out dressy capsule and wedding capsule plus tons of things for my family.

Anyway I had bought some cole haan red heels on final sale but alas the heels were too high for my real life and a few other pieces to consign too. I went to the consignment store near my house that is a gem. They have a few crazy super rich ladies who sell there - these women empty their closets each season and the 'housekeeper' consigns them. So I found a badgley mischka gown in my size in white for $90 that was a perfect dream fit with original hangtags for $650 unworn. I ended up paying $50 for it after my trade-in.

It is similar to the one in this pic without the frou frou frill at the bodice. The event I plan to wear it to is at a super elegant restaurant in Mumbai (Bombay), India where half the women will be in sarees, the other half in evening gowns. I asked my Mom and she said the bride is wearing a traditional red saree so the white will be ok per se ( I won't be stealing any of her thunder!). But i'd like to get some more mileage out of the gown and was planning to have it dyed while in India. Should I go for black? or what would you suggest?

I am super sorry that I do not have pics wearing it but it is in a garment bag in my suitcase and I don't want my husband to see it. We will be arriving at the wedding function separately and I want to wow him. At the consignment store I wore it over my jeans and with boots on so a pic was not happening. The ruffle in my dress starts at the end of the bodice and helps to pull the eye downwards not focussing on my belly. This dress is a very poor cousin to what my dress really looks like but i've searched and searched- no luck finding a better pic.
