I love the idea of a cottage capsule! I agree on the cuteness of skirts and breezy tops!
It'll feel good to have a few nice thing for the cottage, that match and feel fab.
I just bought a new bathing suit and feel so much better in something non-ratty (and more covering of my post -kids body)!

Thanks folks... it appears some of you understand this aspect of my wardrobe plight just a little too well :)

maneera, good for you for doing this with your sleeping clothes. It's all too easy to spend time on the clothes we really get seen in... work, weekend, date night, but sleeping? Always bottom of the priority pile. Well, mine.

Have to say, I'm splitting a gut reading these responses.

Elly, maybe we need a challenge to work on our "painting" capsules. Doesn't everyone need a dozen outfits for painting, you know, once a year?

Carter, BWAAAAA!! : " "Well, I'm certainly not going to wear these now, but they'll be great to wear on the boat." We don't have a boat." Will be chuckling over this for a while.

Elizabeth, this is great! Often (in my case) the head seems to be more cluttered than the closet. It seems you now have your head all sorted!

I am also trying so hard to catch myself when I think, "I don't want to wear this right now, but it'll be good for the beach". We're not moving to the beach for another year. This morning as I was having a much needed shoe purge, I caught myself thinking, "Well, I'm certainly not going to wear these now, but they'll be great to wear on the boat." We don't have a boat.

I'm impressed Elzabeth! What a great challenge. It made me chuckle a bit too. I think you have some god plans going to stop you from wearing the SOT and watch out for those clothing hills!

I love this as well. What you are saying about the cottage echos how I feel personally-- I do need gear of the rough-and-tumble type and very rarely a "i might get paint or concrete or blood on this" capsule.

However, I have 6 oversized or old sweatshirts, a performance zip up, two fleeces, a nylon overshirt, a chambray paint shirt, 3 pair of gear jeans, 1 pair of cargo pants, and about 30 men's t-shirts plus half a drawer of old tees and an entire drawer of loungewear and sports gear.

In reality, I need maybe 1/4 or 1/2 of what I have and am actually missing a few practical pieces. For example-- how useful are two ivory colored men's hoodies? I only wear men's hoodies while camping or working on the house. On the other hand, I don't have a decent dark cotton sweatshirt to wear when we go to the cabin.

This is my hardest purge area, but you've inspired me.

Really amazing post! Like Suz, I laughed and enjoyed this....but only because it hits too close to home!

Like you, I turn a wardrobe hole into a wardrobe hill. I'm trying to control too! I love stretchy comfy things at home, but I don't mind woven capris and shirts as long as they don't cling to my thighs.

I also had a bunch of icky, faded and poorly fitting clothes that I 'wore to bed' with running shorts. I kept telling myself - they aren't torn. Why throw them away! But that's so unlike me in general....I think I was just being lazy. So last week while my husband was away, I packed all those icky clothes and turned them into dusters (they were all soft cotton, just stretched out or faded). Then I drove to the local market and picked up new sleeping shorts and tees. I made sets by matching colours (I pulled out some of my existing workout wear to go into sleep wear too). Now when I open my closet to pull out my night suit, I SMILE! I'm so so glad I did this exercise!

And I'm so glad you are going to make an effort to look beyond the SOTs and enjoy more of your large wardrobe. All the best!

PS: I'm sorry to hear about your FIL. Hope you and your family are looking after each other at this difficult time.

Life has somewhat been in the way lately, so I've been doing minimal
reading, and even more minimal posting. The August challenge posts have reminded me that I did want to join in... on here rather than just in
my head.

It hit me sometime in mid to late July that despite having a huge closet, which I am largely happy with, I struggle when packing to go away for summer weekends, and when it's hot, I reach for the same old things. Which I'm going to call SOT's for short ;). So my challenge for August was to figure this out, and do something about it. What is it that I like about these SOT's? Do I have nicer versions that have not made it into "I'm too hot to think I'll just grab a SOT?" Is this a wardrobe hole (and for goodness sake Elizabeth, if it is, please be realistic about how many you need!!!) (I seem to have developed a habit that if I have a hole, I fill it and then turn it into a large hill, but that's another post)

This is a perfect time to do this, because I am working half days this week, was on bereavement leave last week (my FIL passed away a couple of weeks ago), and am on vacation next week. So lots of opportunities to be totally casual, comfortable, and with any luck, will also be dealing with some summer heat.

I had also set a goal to not purchase anything else, but this was blown
out of the water by FINALLY getting a no exclusions code from BR, so
ordered the white leather moto vest that Sveta has.

Not rocket science, but a few of days of humid heat had me at this:

1. I need breezy drape in my tops. I also enjoy wearing sport tops with a
built in bra when it's hot,and as long as the body isn't too fitted.

2. Natural fibers please, esp for tank tops and tees

3. I love skorts. Stretchy skorts. My favourite thing to wear when it's hot
is my running skirt. They are stretchy, easy, and somehow feel more
"covered" than shorts of the same length. So I've purchased two more
running skirts.... I do run in them too!

3. Shorts need to be stretchy. Why do I have so many pairs of woven
shorts? Seriously, I rarely wear woven ones around the house. I'll wear
them for summer errands... but that doesn't take 8 pairs. But I do
like having a choice of colour, so there you go.

My next challenge was to dress just a tad better for cottage life than I
normally do. "Oh, that would be good for the cottage" is a silly reason
to wear and keep things that are faded, ill fitting, wrong colour, etc. Well, okay, maybe one or two things that can classify as the "campfire capsule" but that's it. Seriously, I seem to pack for days spent rolling around in red mud, or fishing, or walking through thorns. I do not do those things!. The biggest risk of a stain is red wine for goodness sake. I want clothes that I can play frisbee in, play soccer in, walk on the beach in, yet THIS year, I'm also gonna look and feel good at the same time. So rather than grabbing my SOT's plus a bunch of other old icky things that I save for the cottage, I'm going to plan ahead, and take some of my newer tanks, skorts, etc. I'm also going to get rid of (most of) any remaining (some have already gone) "other old things that I save for the cottage". I'll also take one or two pairs of woven shorts, for trips to town if nothing else.

Not sure when I'll have time to do the purging part of this, but I really really want to!

180 degrees from Carter's ball gowns, this is my "hot and sticky capsule" August challenge.
