I watched a YouTube video of The Cult from an NYC concert in July 2022. They sounded fantastic. Ian Astbury still has an amazing voice. It must have been a great concert.

To update I ordered 3 styles from the Gap, none are wonders, here are my takes:
- I ordered the mid rise 90s loose jeans in my usual 32 (14) in two washes. They fit somewhat differently, but both closer to a high rise on me, and not slouchy! My Gap girlfriends in the same size sit lower. I won’t try sizing up because the legs are also not as wide as hoped, and too short to my eye. I could see the cut wasn’t right in some of the stock photos but other colours look good (the plum and black) so I took my chances the washes I liked (brown and one of the faded blues) would work. Based on the photos and two different fits I got, I’m thinking these are all over the place. I give up but suggest others order multiple sizes/washes if interested.
- I tried the mid rise 90s carpenter jeans in medium indigo. I like the more subtle styling vs. the carpenter jeans my kids are wearing. Although they sit high the leg is the right width and length. But the pocket cut is weird on my hips (one reviewer mentions same, but i do have hip dips and it’s not awful, just not quite right).
- I also tried the wide stride jeans - love the leg which is not quite as dramatic on me - perhaps due to zero waist definition, lol! They are ok, hold my tummy in nicely, but a bit wedgie in back and make me look like a thick block with zero waist or hip curve.

Anyway, I still have my gorgeous docs, and hopefully time to figure out my version of this when motivation/inspiration strike again.

The 90s for me were my “office working” years but my alternate ego was a radio DJ on the weekends so I had a dual fashion personality. Workdays were very professional with tailored dresses (my favorite was a black and cobalt houndstooth silk shirt dress — it was sooo sharp, and I wore it so much it got shabby at the cuffs), long blazers, and skirts that were either long and swishy (remember the broom skirts that you’d twist to dry?) or black slim skirts that were a few inches above the knee, not truly mini. Black shoes, always.

For casual wear I remember a lot of turtlenecks and slim fitted cropped tees, some ribbed (ah, I was young and slim and the boobs weren’t so ridiculously huge then). Lots of black. Pants and jeans were full length and easy fitting. Before skinnies. Yeah, I liked 90s dressing.

I would definitely be into some easy fitting, slightly slouchy pants that sit at my hips, not the waist, as long as they don’t show my newly acquired muffin top. I’d have to style more carefully at my current size.

I think I missed most of 90th except for the very end of it .
The boots and low slung jeans with mid to high rise did come back - more on-line than in stores. However I'm still mad at the stupid description - calling those "low rise" jeans. Low rise jeans/pants are necessity for me ( not super low though ) and the search is still continuous. The other culprit for me is curvy cut low rise fit - my straight frame looks ridiculous in it ( dreaming of the straight low rise pants for the work purposes ).
The boots are fab find - looking forward for the pictures and outfits with it .

I was in high school and college in the 90s so that time is VERY close to my heart. Of course, I was skinnier then…. But it’s easier to wear crop tops with high waists, as Angie says!

I am totally sucked in by all the 90s stuff at retail right now. I feel that I have every right to wear this stuff as it is MY ERA.

Awesome to find fun nostalgic pieces Jules! Love them for you.
For be the 90s was when I worked in corporate jobs so suits , heels and a fair bit of getting it wrong. Outside work it was 501s, bodysuits, ditsy florals and some moleskin jeans. I had some great things but a lot that I found very cheaply and a lot of making do.

Jules! YAY! Happy to hear you're trying those fun pants! Hope you get your own Docs too. And thanks for the kind words. That's very nice to know, and thoughtful of you to share :)

As for body image. Teens and young adults today grow up with MUCH better body image than when I was their age. You might notice that with your children. I very much notice that with my nephew (23), his friends, our goddaughter (almost 18), clients who are teens, and my friend's kids. In that respect - the fashion and style world has come a long, long way. It's sooooo awesome!

Zaeobi, I'm with you and can relate! The throwback Y2K fashion today is all about short tops, but the rises of bottoms are much higher. A much more comfortable and forgiving look in every respect. A GOOD throwback. I liked to wear low rises actually, but with LONG TOPS!!!! That only happened in the '00s.

My favourite part about the '90s was not the fashion - it was the MUSIC

Ughh @Angie agreed on the late 90s - Y2K fashions. Growing up in that era, it did such a number on my self-esteem that I always looked *so* awful in any clothing I bought (I was mostly shopping in trendy & cheap fast fashion as a teen) But thankfully rises are now high enough again to not feel so exposed with shorter tops!

@Jules That's a lovely colour of lipstick! I'm on the hunt for something similar (unfortunately Mac lipsticks give me an allergic reaction...) - deep brown lips? Maybe I'm still stuck in the 90s too

Thanks Angie! I’m excited to order the jeans for sure. Your historical perspective on fashion has helped me understand so many things about my style choices and even myself - how the styles of the time affected my body image as a young person, and how not to let those concerns control my choices today. I’m very grateful. Thank you.

(Seen Duran Duran 5 or 6 times. MY BEST! And very, very '80s!!! I wanted to marry Simon le Bon when I was 13).

Fab, Jules! I wore Docs and Levi's in the very early '90s. Then again in the '00s. Mine were brown and white. That roomy fit and mid-rise bottom is fab! I loved it with a belt. I hope you rekindle your love for the vibe immediately. It's important and super fun :)

My fondest fashion memories are the '70s and '80s. I'll add the '60s because I was surrounded by it in the '70s. These are still my absolute favourite fashion decades! I try to incorporate them into my style as much as I can. Makes my heart happy.

The early '90s creeps in there as a fave too. It was a mix of the '70s and '80s so I liked it! LOVED my big pastel pants suits! Lime green and light blue were my faves. Was happy to give plastic earrings, and hair spray a rest too.

The late '90s were personally my worst fashion moments. Leading up to 2000 and Y2K. The super low rises with tight short tops were a mare to wear. The black was excessive when you don't wear a lot of black. The heavy platform shoes ripped my feet apart. The chunky shoes were not my sartorial faves - but I did wear some pairs with joy!

Runcarla, I think the docs are about the same as ever. I don’t seem to mind a heavy boot, I have been wearing Timberlands for a few years and I know Helena finds them too heavy. I have a bad ankle and I suppose sturdy lace-up stomping boots help me feel confident and free, rather than weighed down.

Loving everyone’s cargos and denim picks! And thanks for the brown docs love <3
Zaeobi, you reminded me of my one true lipstick love: Fetish by MAC. I’ve really never had another colour I wore as much as that one. Sadly I’m not sure such a dark colour will ever ‘suit’ me again…
Rachy, I wore my blush moto to see D2, it seemed the closest I had to 80s in a pinch. They were the equivalent of a boy band for me in my preteen 80s, before I went down a dark goth path (like literally dark in all black clothes, not spiritually… lol).

Your 90s were different from mine Jules. Like LJP and Runcarla I was in my 30s but what with having a baby in Jan 1991 and then 2 more children by end 1996 I was too busy to follow style much. I did like leggings with long tunic-like sweaters, so comfy, 2 pairs combat boots but less chunky than Docs, and hand knits. I have totally revived my 1995 hand knit crafted by my mother in law for the past 2 winters and do love that! Perhaps that is “my” 90s!

Dark brown boots are where it's at! In fact, dark brown everything is something I miss from the 90s (chocolate lipstick, anyone??)

The baggy cargo pants are nostalgic for tomboy me, but I prefer them high-rise & cuffed now (e.g. elasticated ankles) so they don't still end up looking like JNCOs on me (anyone remember those too, lol??)

I passed on Doc's in the 90's but have 2 pair now that I LOVE. They really make me feel great when I wear them. So, I say "you go girl"!

Runcarla...I got the Blair sandal inspired by Jaime and I do not find them too heavy. I have the Pascal front zip boot and they are somewhat heavier, but for a winter boot I find that reassuring.

I have no memory of the ‘90’s(!) and don’t think I could identify what was trending from my 30’s - 40’s. However, those boots look fabulous, and the jeans you show (and Suz’s as well) look very wearable and age defying.

Question: are all Dr.Marten’s heavy soled, or do they make lighter versions nowadays?

Kkards, I had the double-yoked jeans too! They were olive green denim. The yoke was brown suede. I loved them.

Your new Docs are gorgeous. I wore Docs in the 90s and would wear them now if I thought my feet could manage them. I just got a pair of jeans that are 90s-inspired.

Oh fab! I’m definitely feeling a little retro. The jeans in the 1st find are an almost exact replica of a pair of cords I owned back in the day…the jeans in the 2nd, well what an i say that the style name does not…90s loose.
And what can I say,,,,this WIW are actual cargo pants that I’ve owned since the late 90s, and pulled out again earlier this summer.

Yep, loving it. I’ve been looking for full length very wide leg cargo pants in cotton for years. The pair I used to have (from the 90s or maybe early 00s) wore out about 7? years ago. For me it’s a timeless style. Perfect for warmer weather when jeans start to feel too hot but it’s not warm enough for shorts. After looking for so long I found 2 pairs in 2 weeks! Love, love, love full length wide leg pants.

Oh, fun! You can't go wrong with Docs! And that slouchy, hip-slung fit has honestly never lost its appeal for me -- agree that it just screams cool.
