I can really relate to 1, 3 and 4! I am the most frustrated with multiple aspects of my wardrobe in January/February, and fear acceptance may indeed by the best route. Stupid winter :-/

As to your patterned pants, that's a great observation, as probably a few simple tops will net you a whole load on new and interesting outfits.

Chiming in rather late to the party about the static cling with skirts and tights. That is a bugbear and I wear skirts infrequently in winter for this reason, especially tube or pencil type skirts. (Long A-line or pleated skirts don't seem to have this problem.) And sweater dresses -- yikes.

I have used Static Guard in the past but I prefer to avoid chemicals, especially aerosol ones. And the last can I had disappeared somewhere between work and home, so it was never where I was when I needed it.
Other things I have read about, like the water and wire hangers and fabric softeners, work for about half an hour in my climate; so, adequate for church but not for a work day. The bigger the temperature differential, the drier the indoor air, so with our cold winters I am doomed. Also, I wear a midi-length wool coat and drive a car, so there are several layers of rubbing to build up the static.

A half slip definitely helps, but not enough to prevent pencil skirt creep on a work day.

One trick I read about was to put several tiny safety pins in the hem. This works the same way a wire coathanger does, to discharge the static electricity, except on an ongoing basis.

Re: your third pieces: I wear a white lab coat over my clothes at work, so jackets and blazers just don't work. I have got into vests and gilets in a big way: menswear Annie Hall vests and also preppy sweater vests. I also use silk square neckscarves a lot; they add a little extra something to an outfit, but also can be shed (and tucked in or tied around a purse) if my locale gets too warm.

Update: I've had to back-burner taking WIW photos for the time being. My work schedule filled up, and when I leave the house in the morning it is too dark to get a decent photo (also, time is precious). That said, when you take on a lot of unanticipated sub days, it is REALLY nice to have a capsule all ready to go.

I updated my wear tracking in the original post. Some of the gear-crossover pieces (wool hoody and down vest) have higher wears because I use them on the weekends as well.

Remarkably, without consciously limiting myself, I am still at just 22 items. If I add in my three pairs of winter-worthy boots and my three go-to coats, that's still just 28. I think I would have to start counting gear and/or accessories to make this a true challenge.

I think I am pretty close to 30 days now (since I'm not counting weekends or most Wednesdays, when I am usually wearing gear), but I lost count!

I share some of your challenges with static, extra layers and a capsule of boots. I wish I had more suggestions for you.
When wearing dresses or skirts with tights I use hand lotion. I apply it to my hands as usual, then run my hands up and down the tights. The residual lotion removes any static for the rest of the day. Try it!

Katerina -- I've been looking at brightly-coloured scarves all week! I think this might be my solution. I think I want one in citron and one in lavender...

I wore a *very* bright sweater today. We are in the middle of several very grey/rainy/icy days, so a little colour was quite welcome.

La Ped, I can relate to your thoughts about pops of light colour - I feel the same. I use a lot of scarves to add bright and light colours to my dark outfits. This is basically the only solution I know.... Perhaps a neckerchief? Your off-white winter scarves sound like a good solution!

Sterling, my whole house has had the flu this year, despite getting flu shots! It's apparently an awful year all over the US for cold/flu season. We've been sick all week (and this is just after recovering from a strep infection -- I just can't catch a break!).

Floors are tough. My dream home has radiant heat floors... I'm sure the building codes for how much insulation a foundation requires are different from state to state. Most of our house has very warm floors (the parts located over the furnace room), but the living room is directly over the garage so its floor is noticeably colder. We bought a big wool area rug to compensate.

We had a tiny cold snap. I discovered that there is at least a 10 degree difference between the first and second floors. The difference is so dramatic that I spent some time thinking about it. I finally concluded that there must be ZERO installation between the first floor and the area beneath the house (what do you even call that area)????

Prior to this cold snap, I hadn't had any reason to think about installation. In fact, I can say with certainty that the subject never once entered my brain before this month.

I will be inspecting the sub flooring when all this weather passes and I can do something about it. Right now, I am keeping the house at ~62 degrees (on the first floor).

I would like to say something about fashion, but the cold medicine makes me feel like I am thinking through a fog. Hope I didn't hijack your thread.

DonnaF, I really like the idea of a faux-leather vest! That's something I'll have to keep a lookout for. I'm also thinking a menswear-style vest, a la Diane Keaton in Annie Hall, would be really fun and easy for me to wear.

I'm also contemplating adding an overcoat, or oversized cocoon coat -- something that would encourage me to wear toppers during the winter. I have two wool coats and one long down coat, and one of the wool coats is (over)due for replacement. I'll keep my eye on end-of-season sales, but if it doesn't happen til next fall, that's fine too.

I just updated my items and # of wears in the OP. Wednesday was day 12 (I'm not counting weekends), and I'm at 17 items (not including shoes, outerwear, or accessories).

My only new thought this week -- and it's not a very new one -- I need to find ways to add pops of light colour or bright colour to my outfits. I have two off-white winter scarves that I wear regularly, so maybe that's enough? I'm perpetually craving contrast, and it's easy during spring/summer when I wear breton tops (white white stripes) all the time. I'm not sure what the winter solution is. Layering sweaters in lighter colours? I haven't pulled out my bright, stripy cashmere yet this month, mainly because it won't work with all the patterned pants...

Also, every time I wear something light coloured, it ends up with soot smudges from the woodstove, and I have to spot clean after just one wear... dark colours are so practical.

LP: Running a metal hanger over a garment is a scent free way of removing static. Nordstrom used to carry great half slips but I don’t see any online. No elastic and short enough for the height challenged. I still miss my taffeta slip that somehow disappeared in my house.

I keep my thermostat between 62 to 64 degrees so I have to remember not to bundle up so much when I leave my house since NOBODY keeps their place that cold. I wear vests a lot and have a couple of down ones not shown. I am waiting for the ruffled one to be marked down. I wear one similar to the second one quite a bit. Because my house is so cold, I need to wear collars or scarves or both so that again is a third piece.

I am not big on color so pattern mixing with neutrals is fairly easy since I don’t like to wear a lot of solids.

Very insightful. Your comment on needing supporting tops for patterned bottoms resonated with me. I love patterned bottoms but don’t wear them often. Perhaps this is why?

JAileen -- you'd think I'd have figured out low-humidity dressing by now! But I pretty much lived in yoga pants and t-shirts (my version of "maternity" wear) when I was in Nevada. I love the idea of a slip -- If I can find one with lace trim that's just the right length to have it peek out a bit, that's a look I would enjoy, but I should probably have a "proper" one too. ;)

I actually like keeping the house as close to the outside temp as is reasonable. In LV, I always tried not to run the AC 'til it started to hit 100 outside. If the difference is too great, whether hot or cold, it's hard to make myself go outside -- climate shock.

I keep my house at 66. I always wear fleece or something like that. Sometimes it fouls me up. I think it’s cold so I bundle up when I go out and then find out it’s not that cold.

I have Static guard because this is a desert, so there’s no moisture at all. I’d probably wear a slip though, because I’m old school.

I should rephrase #3: I enjoy wearing my toppers *at home* and other buildings that run cool (like the drafty old barn that is home to the community theatre group I work with -- I don't think it ever gets above 60 in the winter, unless it's packed with a full audience!) but find they are often too warm when I am out and about, and when I take off the topper I'm left with a dull outfit.

In winter I sometimes wear a fitted tube skirt under my skirts (warmer than a slip). I am not sure whether that would help with the static cling but it could be worth a try.

This is such a great post. I really like the idea of compiling your posts into a single thread. I have been concerned that if a post slips to the second or third page, I'll miss it altogether. You single handedly solved that problem for me. Thank you.

These are my favorite types of posts. Introspective. Full of really useful information that can used to move your style journey further a long. Useful information that may or may not help other Forum Members.

Although I am counting the number of items in my January capsule, but it never occurred to me to count number of wears. That in itself is exceptionally valuable information. It is not too late for me to go back and try to calculate the numbers.

I wish you luck finding a static solution for your skirts and dresses.

I have been enjoying your WIWs; you make casual cool look so appealing and effortless.

I hope you can find and share a third piece solution.I have the same problem. Our thermostat is set to 67 - I frequently hand out toppers to friends who visit. I would rather be cool than hot, because it is easier to fix.

I got these boots for Christmas and they are comfortable on my wide forefoot, grippy soled and microfiber velvet lined - good for out and about, more dressier mild winter, probably not deep winter. Of course the Sierra Nevada seems to be skipping winter so I don't know how they would do in NE winter temps.

When I wore skirts and hose every day in the corporate 1990s, I used this spray static remover and it worked pretty well. But it was a moister climate than yours, so YMMV.

La Ped, I remember a spray for static cling that I used. The name escapes me but I think it was sold in the laundry detergent section. It might have been "Static Guard" or something like that. It was quite effective.
Bundling up in winter. I can so relate. I feel like I am constantly taking layers off and putting them on.

I will keep updating this post and adding to the thread as I create more outfits, notice patterns, and continue to reflect on my likes/dislikes.

I am seven outfits into the challenge, and have used 13 items so far:
https://youlookfab.com/welookf.....30x30-wiws
https://youlookfab.com/welookf.....ys-3-and-4
https://youlookfab.com/welookf.....laid-pants

Grey herringbone skirt (two wears)

My only goal going into the challenge was not to rely too heavily on jeans or flannel shirts -- I've worn jeans once, and casual olive pants twice. I have not yet added a flannel shirt, in part because I have too many and can't decide on just one!

Things I’ve learned:

1. I need to figure out a static cling remedy for some of my skirts and dresses (I already knew this, but including them in the capsule may force my hand -- I haven't worn them yet, but might try on a mild day). Dryer sheets? Bounce Spray? The problem, of course, is pairing with tights -- they're fine over bare legs (these are pieces I bought in warmer weather, and it hadn't occurred to me to try them on with tights at the time). I already put lotion on my legs before getting dressed, but that’s not enough. I’ve tried spritzing with water too, but the effect doesn’t last long. Or maybe I just accept these as spring/fall pieces and don't worry about wearing in deep winter? Do I hunt down a slip or a half-slip?

2. I’ve added several patterned bottoms over the past couple of years, but I’m not sure I’ve added enough solid-coloured tops to support them. I do have solid tops, and vastly prefer wearing them with printed bottoms (vs with solid bottoms) but sometimes the solid tops I have still feel boring, due to fabric or silhouette, even if the colour/pattern/texture in the outfit all play well together. Maybe this is a case of needing more third pieces? Which brings me to…

3. I do not enjoying wearing a third piece in the winter. At a certain point, when I’m bundled up with hat, mittens, scarf, long johns, etc, a topper just feels like too much. And I inevitably end up being too warm inside in the winter -- partly the contrast with the outdoors, and partly because a lot of people in New England heat to 70 degrees or more (I keep my house around 65-68, which is a topper-friendly temperature). I’m not really sure what to do about this. Indoor scarves are only an option sometimes -- but often I already have to deal with an outdoor scarf. Most of my tops do not lend themselves to statement necklaces. I don’t have pierced ears, so no earrings. Maybe a vest? I’ve been wishing I had a boiled wool vest to split wears with my puffer vest, and to sub in when I want something a bit more polished… (Note: I think this is why I love the leggings+skirt/dress+pullover for winter wear; it gives me a third-piece effect without feeling like I’m wearing a third piece.)

4. I could stand to add some variety to my deep-winter boot collection. When I’m out for a long period of time and/or it's truly frigid, I wear my Muck Boots, end of story. They are warm, and they keep water and melting snow out. My feet stay warm. If I want to look a little nicer, I wear my Blundstones, and if I know I’ll be walking a long distance, I often choose my Ahnu winter hiking boots, because they’re a smidge lighter. I don’t have a polished option, but maybe I need to consider adding a pair of insulated/waterproof ankle boots -- Blondo, Aquatalia, or similar? Just for dinner out/concerts/etc. I could also probably use a “cool” looking pair of uber-warm boots (like Sorel or Ugg), I just don’t like how heavy most of those are, and have a hard time with fit. Of course, if I had a larger boot collection to choose from, then I'd have to include them in the 30... ;)
