shevia - totally agree! I also find jeans slightly easier to find than pants, and since my workplace skews casual, it's just as well!

rachylou - see, I think a long black puffer would depress me. My shorter black jackets feel sassier. I also have a mid-length black wool jacket, but it sees less use because it's a cat hair magnet (also the weather has been a bit warm for it). Another long coat would be too much much like every single other coat I see in NYC. I was in a long line for food recently, very common at fast casual places. Of the 30 or so people ahead of me, there was maybe one non-neutral. I had the long red puffer on and was very happy. This is a long way of saying I think you should seek out the long floral puffer of your jeans.

I don’t know why, but your list made me think about my long black puffy. I wear it, in my mind, because it’s long. I have shorter puffies that I don’t wear as much because they’re short. BUT you know, they’re also patterned. If I also had, oh say, a long floral one, I wonder if I’d be willing to give up the black one.

I am mostly sorted on these categories, but I have three wish list items:

1. Wide leg navy pants. The pair I have on hand no longer fits well. I'm actively hunting for a pair. I ordered and passed on a pair from LOFT, and now have a Boden pair on order.

2. Wide leg jeans - this is a HEWI.

3. White hi-tops, as described above. Maybe also navy ones someday, when space allows, but I'd need to pass on some shoes before that can happen.

I also think that while my essentials are in a good place, my wardrobe is a bit statement heavy, especially in tops. On the other hand, I've edited out a lot of dross, and I'm left with a lot of statements that all work well. I have space for them, so it's not a disaster, but I'd like fewer. I will try to be as discerning as possible as the year goes on, since if my wardrobe is mostly 8's-10's, then it probably makes sense to figure out which 8's I don't need. That way, I can pass them on while they're still in good shape for a future owner.

Thanks, everyone!

Angie, Thank you!! The hi-tops are more representational. That capsule isn't complete yet. I'd like navy in addition to white but can't justify it until I've passed on other items... all my other items are in good shape, so it will be a while. I also have some black ones with a gold leaf print that I left off. I guess they can be statements as well as essentials, which is cool with me.

Suz, we can still dress like twinsies, which is the main thing ;)

Take the red and teal hi-tops out. They might be workhorses, but they are not quiet enough to be essentials

Smiling at year-round metallic footwear, too! I also like the idea of making hi-tops a category! Interesting!

You are similar to me, I think (surprise, surprise!!! ha ha) in that changes in silhouette are key...the core colours remain and some of the same styles (classic coats, probably) but you will adapt the shapes over time.

I love this exercise. Here is last year's list, and most of it is the same

Solid tees and sweaters in black and navy, fitted but of different sleeve lengths for different seasons- same, but would add white/ivory and add a focus on rib knits

Striped sweaters and tops in blue or black stripes with white/ivory - same

Black and dark blue skinny and bootcut jeans - the skinnies remain but are less important; would add demi bootcuts (both cropped and the new full length) and would add wide legs if I could find flattering ones.

Lighter wash jeans with trendy element (fraying etc) - same

Black and navy pants - less emphasis right now but they remain in; I would add that the silhouette is changing from skinny and ankle to incorporate wider legs and longer lengths

Metallic footwear in the summer/shoulder seasons -same except would expand to all year

Black booties in winter - same

Denim jackets in blue and white for summer layering - I used these less last year but won't remove them yet; it depends partly on things out of my control like weather and office temps

Long pendants to wear with winter knitwear, in gold and silver - same

New for 2020

Hi top sneakers, mostly Chucks so far, to go with the new longer full length pants and jeans. I LOVE THIS LOOK and it's now a go-to for me. Some of the ones I have are in colors, but I want to add white (debating between more Chucks or Angie's white leather Eccos)

As you can see, the changes are mostly due to changes in silhouette - the color and basic ideas of the pieces remain the same. The only big change is the addition of hi-tops. Only space limitations have prevented me from adding 3-4 more pairs of Chucks, to be honest....

I also have two short black warm jackets, but I don't want to add more back coats (despite living in NYC too much black outerwear makes me sad), and I'm not sure if this is an essential just yet. It might be trending that way, even if I don't add to the capsule.

I forgot to relate this to the forum post, but I don't have time right now to start over and add the Finds again - sorry, Angie!
