Keturah, I *love* your planned projects and the WIP! That green is so lovely - looks great with your coloring. I'm jealous ;)...it's one of my favorite colors but doesn't look great near my face.

I only recently picked up my needles again. I mainly knit little things for others, but after I finish a couple of those projects I'm planning to knit a few wardrobe items for myself this year. I am a rather slow knitter and not making an extensive list so I do not get discouraged.

First: Deschain (https://quinceandco.com/products/deschain) by Leila Raabe. I'm trying the suggested Kestrel yarn in Minos (cool lilac)--hurray for Christmas gift cards. I see I'll need to make the neckline less wide and will also lessen the ease somewhat--hope my skills are up to the modifications. I'm looking for a simple dress to wear under it. My goal is to have it ready for Easter. Hopefully plenty of time!!

Then I'd like another linen top. Maybe Square-ish: https://www.ravelry.com/patter.....square-ish

Then I MUST frog my (years) earlier attempt at a Boxy sweater to use my pretty yarn (I think it's madtosh light, but I know the color way is Georgia O'Keefe). I haven't been able to stomach it previously, but the yarn was pricy for me and must be put to good use! I think I'll use it for a cardigan, but I have time to decide what pattern.

Apologies for the rambling, but I love to discuss knitting/sewing/quilting!...anything fiber (I'm also in a small place with 2 kittens so no quilting is happening for the foreseeable future)

Planning to spend more time on YLF while I sort out my clothing needs, so I hope I catch some of your finished projects :)

I love that you are knitting for yourself. I’m a basic knitter and have yet to tackle a sweater. I’ve been avoiding getting going on my first pair of socks as I’m not sure what pattern will be most successful for me. When I was in high school I used to sew a lot of my clothes. It was fun to have something a little different than what every other teenager had. But a busy life and work pushed sewing to the side. Now I’m learning to weave and plan to move quickly from weaving dish towels (boring) to weaving cloth for clothes. Maybe this will be harder than I think but I’m excited to see what comes of it. Can’t wait to see pics of your finished sweaters!

I am so impressed that you are making your own clothes! The ability to foresee how something will fit you, imagine the changes that would make it suit you better, and then carry them out technically blows me away.

That soft, cozy first sweater will be amazing on you, and a good foil for whatever colors you choose to pair with it. I also love the last picture. You are beautiful, and this green is a great color for you.

I imagine knitting as a good "mom" hobby, taking your project in a bag to the playground or story hour. Is there anything to that, or am I overly romanticizing/simplifying it?

Looking forward to your WIWs in these sweaters!

suntiger, I encourage anyone to try knitting and not be scared at all. You can do whatever you like with it once you learn the basics! I'm still surprised, for instance, that a scarf I knitted my brother over 15 years ago receives endless compliments. It was just a simple ribbed scarf knit in bulky yarn! But people ask him all the time where he purchased it. (I am still pleased when he tells me ) I am going to try my hand at sewing this year, I think. I had decided it was impossible for several logistical reasons. But! A friend has offered her spare to me when I want to sew. And I really, really want to try my hand at it. I love knitting so dearly. But I want to learn to sew, maybe even tailor some (!!!!), so I can fit my own pants, jeans, tops, dresses--the works. I don't mind buying RTW. But the idea of creating it myself, even if using someone else's pattern, excites me!

I'm in awe of people that can knit and sew well, and customizing is a big motivator! I did a little sewing, but the fabrics I like are fussy (silks, brocades, etc) and my machine needs repair. Thought of knitting due to all the beautiful multicolored yarns on Etsy, but haven't tried yet.

ChristieJ, thank you for such lovely compliments. I am on Ravelry!! Here is my profile: https://www.ravelry.com/people/livevintageously

I will try to report back when I finish the grey sweater. It may be later this year by the time I finish it.

Joy, the Galloway is next I think, after Tuilieries. I want to do the Galloway right away. Its sophisticated land girl vibe has me all excited! But I still am not settled on a color way. And for the time and yarn expense, I want to be sure! Plus, I may surprise myself, but I have a feeling that sucker is going to take some time, what with the swatching, stranded color work, etc. Have a feeling it may get started later this year but probably not finished. But we'll see!

Staysfit, thank you dearly! Though, I did not knit the color swatches in the photo! All the photos save the lower quality ones are designer photos. lol! So glad to meet another knitter. I have a couple of those projects myself! One is brightly colored cotton (why did I choose cotton fora first sweater?!) still sitting in my parents' attic. I have no idea when I'll retrieve it. Maybe 15 years too haha!

Gorgeous! You have a beautiful knitting stitch! So even and your intarsia colors in the sweaters look great! I used to love knitting when I had time. I have an unfinished project that has been sitting in my closet now for three years.....a cardigan that needs one more sleeve! I may get to it when I retire 15 or so years from now.....

No way could I ever knit or sew my clothes. If I were you, I'd get busy first on the Galaway fairisle wrap cardigan but have no advice for what color. It needs to be something that you are excited about so that it gets finished and worn and something that goes with your wardrobe or planned one

How lovely these are! As a knitter who makes mostly simple things, I’m impressed by your skill level and glad these are for you to wear this time. I especially like the first pattern and would love to hear how it goes with the modifications and the silvery grey yarn you chose. Are you on Ravelry?

Taylor, thank you! I've been knitting now for 15 years or so, and haven't many sweaters. So it is a new challenge. Sorry about your mom. Could you take a knitting lesson at a yarn shop? Never too late to learn. And then you could knit your mom something and surprise her :)

Sara L, I think the yellow and grey version would work just fine. I have mostly wine and plum already, which would look good with golden yellow. I just am indecisive, I think :)

BrieN, you are so welcome! I can't wait to see you knit one up. I will keep you all apprised of my progress !!!

Wish I could knit . I do sew a bit , I had to out of necessity to alter my own clothes to fit, but I am really not that skilled .
My mom wanted to teach me to knit when I was young but I wasn’t interested , she’s 80 now and her hands don’t allow her to knit ...of course now I want to learn .
So glad to see you have the ability to create special pieces for yourself !

You must be a marvelous sewist! I can't even imagine spending that much for a prom dress. I spent less than that for my wedding dress. It was a gorgeous sample that I got on clearance. Of course, I'm not opposed to spending more on a wedding dress. But I don't understand how prom has become so expensive, especially in light of the rest of one's life. (I must be becoming more practical as I age... ha!)

Eva, I am slowly branching into sweater making territory, and I totally love that I can customize things. It is still a process of learning what fits, how to modify the pattern, etc. Lots of math to it! (Makes my eyes spin sometimes.) But quite nice. I still sometimes buy a sweater, but usually only at thrift stores, and only if I love it, it can be modified, or I want the wool so badly I'm willing to completely unravel it, steam it, and repurpose it. I have done that once and would like to do it more, though it is quite a bit of work. I will keep an eye out for Diana's sweaters!

Sterling, Angie, thank you so dearly!! I am very excited and yet a little scared to knit for myself. There is a commitment level to it. When I gift knitting it just goes to a new home. But having a sweater that doesn't quite meet all my expectations definitely makes me work through some old perfectionist tendencies, lol.

BrieN, thank you so kindly!! The sweater is called Beauty School and is by Amy Appel. (link is in text.) I am messaging you info too, in case you don't see my reply. I bet your daughter would love it if she loves vintage and/or close-fitting sweaters!

Oooh. Pretty sweaters!
Can you share the source for the pattern for #3? My daughter asked me to knit her a cropped sweater, and I'm guessing she's thinking something along those lines.
Very lovely in the green, and especially on you!

I knitted a bit, and sewed A LOT in my 30's and 40's, but not so much in my 50's. Just had my sewing machine serviced last month. If I can't find my HEWI white sundress, I might just make one up myself.

I often see great sweaters in the store where I wish I could change the fit or colourway just a little and then they would be perfect for me. By knitting them yourself, you can do all of that!
I like that fair isle cardigan a lot! I think I would go for the grey and red colourway, and for myself, I would maybe swap out the red for a berry tone...
I only knit socks, but always admire the handknit sweaters I see here on YLF. Diana makes beautiful sweaters as well.

I do both but not that well.knitting is usually confined to accessories but I do wear skirts, dresses and tops that I ve made.It is time consuming though so my production rate is a bit erratic.l am supposed to be sewing a prom dress for my daughter at the moment and am finding it a bit daunting especially as she is reporting back that other girls have spent £350on shop bought creations.l like the jumpers that you have chosen to knit, they will look great when they are done.

Yes, another sewer and knitter here! Looks like JAileen and I are making the same scarf. Here is my finished project (74 inches long and narrower than in the original pattern on Ravelry).

Waaaay too filthy hot in Sydney today to model it, hence the coat hanger trick!

Ooh, your choices are beautiful! I mostly sew my own wardrobe so it’s always fun to see what others make to wear. I look forward to seeing how your sweaters turn out.

I love your pieces. I knit, but slowly, or maybe sporadically. I’ve been knitting a scarf for a year now. It’s 54 inches long so far, but I think it should be longer, maybe 70 inches.

Ohhhh, I love your choices. I have a huge soft spot for handknit sweaters. Thank you for sharing them.

I used to dabble in making my own clothes, but haven't in years. But, I was considering getting a new machine and giving it a go again. Especially since the pieces I'm interested in making are pretty simple.

Love love love!!! I think the fair isle will be fantastic, and the bottle green is a great color for you!

I used to knit and crochet a lot, but have found that it was too much with a heavy computer-usage job - hello carpal tunnel. So I"m focused on counted cross stitch right now. Not as wearable, but still creative and theraputic.

Keep us posted on your progress!

Daisy, thank you!! Multiples... I don’t think I would probably knit more than one of the fair isle cardigan. The yarn is more expensive and it will definitely be an investment. Also the time, as you noted! I’m not certain if I’ll have it finished to wear in 2019 lol!

Evie, oh thank you! Your hooded dress is sensational! I love the ruching/gathering on the sleeves! So dramatic and beautiful. I don’t know if I’m experienced or not. This project will say a lot haha! I’ve only knit one other stranded colorwork project. It turned out great. But not sure what to expect. I’ll post photos when they are finished!!

I am so excited with and for you! You have some amazing projects lined up. Great style/pattern choices. Each style is uniquely different from the other and will therefore bring you much joy and versatility, I’m sure! You must be an experienced knitter to be able to tackle style #2. I’m super impressed. I used to knit on and off as a hobby, but have unfortunately had to stop after a neck injury. I do still sew here and there, as my neck allows. Just recently I sewed myself a casual hooded dress (attached photo). You’ll have to keep us posted as to your progress with these projects. Would love to see the finished products.

1: Gorgeous!

2: Absolutely gorgeous, and I would be so tempted to have several of the colourways (OTOH, I don't knit myself, and therefore the time taken to knit them rather than purchase them would factor in whether a knitter has one or more!)

3: I agree with you that the cropped length is a little shorter than preferred, but it's looking good so far, and such a great colour on you!
