A couple of you mentioned adding a new color. I love color, so I think I'll focus on different colors for wildcards, without overdoing it until I find the right one.

Shedev, I don't have a real count of my wardrobe at the moment. We are prepping to sell the house, so Winter is packed away. I'd guess I'm in the 225ish range. A bit bloated because I've been planning to split it between City and beach. My definition of "favorites" is also probably a bit more liberal than your definition of "love". Basically, these are the items that never disappoint me. I wear them all and enjoy them. When I was making this list, I started from memory and came up with 125 items. For the rest, I flipped through WIW pics from last F/W.

Smittie, thanks for the commiseration and the idea about the glue pieces! The glue is so important, yet gets no glory.

Bonnie, it is unfathomable that every bottom out there doesn't flatter your bottom half;-) You are too hard on yourself!

Sally, I agree there's no need to purge just to purge. I have the space and some great unknowns ahead of me for the next couple years, so until there's a bit more focus and immediacy, I dont plan to do unwarranted purging.

Sterling...my analytical twin! Love how you think. I will spend some time evaluating these questions.

Back in a bit!

I have 2 bars on my signal, so let's see what kind of response I can manage before the wind blows the other way;-)

First things first...the water was less damaging than it could have been. The HVAC kicked back on and the garage ceiling never caved in:-)

First of all, thanks for indulging my spreadsheet nerdiness. A few of the things that stuck out to me: the transitional nature of my wardrobe is fairly clear. (For those who don't know, I am recently retired, still living in Atlanta for another year or two, then moving to the beach.) My current faves are running about 50% work clothes, 50% Atlanta casual. That's fine for now, but it's time to start thinking about a beach version of nice casual. I certainly won't want to spend all day everyday in the Old Navy shorts and tees I call my uber casual wardrobe now.

Another item that cleared up some of my recent frustration is the lack of white and light colored items in my faves. A nice pair of white shorts and a couple more white tops would probably help quite a bit.

This one surprised me: I have A LOT of blue. I have long been a non-lover of blue, but rediscoverd it 2-3 years ago, and I've apparently gone a bit nuts there. More pink, less blue for awhile.

Posting now in case I lose connection. Back in a few.

It's fascinating to see your thought process, and enjoy your view!

>What would you expect your list to tell you about your wardrobe/needs?

Anyone remember Mo's threads on how many items you really need?
My lists remind me of the abundance I already have, and that I do not need to buy anything unless something wears out, or I change in size.

If I want anything new -- a new style or fresh look -- it must replace something I already have.

When I edit I rank order the items within each category ("tank tops" or "blue jeans"), then consign/donate/recycle the bottom 10% to 30% depending on how many I'd like to delete.

I find your spreadsheet fascinating, thanks for sharing. I often do a narrative version of this but am thinking, maybe I should do a spreadsheet?! I am terrible at using them though.

However, in relation to your question, I think just keep everything you think you need and ignore the numbers. That must be why I like the narrative version

Wow. I think I need to make wardrobe spreadsheets my thing. I would use them to see any holes or needs in my wardrobe but also to see what I DON'T need to buy more of. I have a bad habit of reaching for the same few items and wearing them over and over while everything else sits unloved. This would help remind myself I have lots of other favourites to choose from. You always post great WIW's so it's no surprise you have so many favs.

So sorry about the flood. Don't beat yourself up too much....this too will pass.....let it go and enjoy your time at the beach.

Holy Cow! A flood? Here comes my favorite "flood" song. It's emo. It's relaxing. It will help you chill.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ES-ErzabNaY

Now, on to fashion.

I like the balance of woven to knitwear in your tops. I also notice that you seem to like as much variety in your bottoms as in your blouses/sweaters.

It seems like you have dresses covered for those special occasions when you would like to wear one. Do you have a coat or topper for your dresses? I've noticed that coats that work well with trousers look proportionally off with some dresses.

And your view? Stunning!

I think it is wonderful that you have 148 pieces that you love. I really love your color scheme as well. I don't think anything needs to be changed. You have a great core wardrobe of items that you love and fit all occasions. Now you are free to try a trendy piece or new accent color every now and then without worry of not having something you need or love. Great job!

Hi Carter. I have similar spreadsheets. They are literally my most useful wardrobe planning tool.

From what I can see of your spreadsheet, you track category, number of items in each category, and colors. All very useful information.

First, you know what categories of clothing you love and wear. For example, you love pants, much more than dresses. My first question for myself would be, are these realistic quantities for me and my lifestyle? Do I really not need or wear dresses that often? So that information informs future buying decisions.

Second, I look at the numbers. For example, I love to wear lounge pants to wear after work. I own exactly ten pair of lounge pants. I came to realize that "ten" was the magic number for me. I don't need any more. I can't possibly wear any more than I currently own. Hence, I am no longer shopping for lounge pants. This was very useful information, because I used to swing through the lounge section every single time I went to the mall. Every single time. Now I have numbers that show I can direct those monies toward other purchases. In my case, tops.

Third, based on the numbers, is there a category in your life that needs to be amped up? Do all the quantities feel "appropriate" for our life style? Do you have "enough" in each category to be satisfied? Do you need to shop other categories because the numbers are sparse? I personally have always been "bottom heavy" and "top poor." That directed my shopping strategy.

Finally, I start to evaluate the color schemes. Your color scheme looks very coherent. So I can't really say much here.

Great job. So sorry about the water damage. Has it been fixed? Water damage is one of my biggest fears in life because I have seen what it can do and it shocks the senses.

I think it is wonderful that you like so much of your wardrobe. If you love these things then why reduce then if you have room to store them. Some will wear out, some will fall out of favour - that is how it goes. But picking which ones that will be is hard....I would wear and enjoy what you have.

I also don't have a lot of skirts that I love. I own three, but would only choose one of these if starting again.

I have about 100 pieces in my closet. I will count again at the end of winter and see where I am this year. My goal is to only let in pieces that I love, some years it might be more, and some years less.

Does this mean that you are quite happy with your wardrobe? That you have plenty of boredom preventing, happiness inducing options without losing track of the possibilities due to an excess that gets in the way of outfit creation? Your WIWs are looking great.

Your pieces have a few strong color choices and there is some redundancy (high 5 on black pants and the ponte knits!). It seems you optimize your wardrobe thoughtfully. When I gather data about something, it is usually with a question or two in mind. It's interesting to me to count first and then see what the numbers might reveal. Is there anything about how your wardrobe is working that concerns you now?

As you might have guessed, I don't precisely count wardrobe items. Just did a huge clean out; for me, it is about both liking what I have and not having so much that putting outfits together is cumbersome. I need some negative space in my drawers and hangers to feel grounded, as well as lots of good options. I've learned that my closet can hold more than my head can, making a little bit less to work with an advantage. At the same time, there is a fairly high number of clothes, shoes and accessories. Now that the wardrobe is smaller, I will be looking to see if anything that is not worn over time should go. If I can organize and enjoy my clothes, then the numbers are likely to right.

I look forward to seeing how data can help sort out wardrobes.

Best with the flood.

Ok, so you could take this exercise further and list out your top 10 glue pieces. Maybe you can weed out some less good ones.

I have left popcorn on the stove a couple of times and really made the house smokey. I've also been extremely close to having the bathtub overflow a couple of times too.

Carter, what are your total wardrobe numbers? I just did this exercise, and I came up with 40 items out of 180 that I truly love. A lot of the others are solid likes. I had the most love for shoes and toppers.

carter, I am not sure what you are asking. I think that if you love these things and wear them, then it is "right".

What I see is a really good, versatile mix that can carry you across many things. I see a strong color preference. And to top it off, these are all things that you love. I love that all the pieces appear to mix very well together. If all these things are in good shape and don't need replacing, would you consider a "wildcard" color ? Is that even important to you ? I think that you would look good in a green of some sort. Or maybe even a plummy color ...

I think that in moments of water disasters, one can have absolute, sartorial epiphanies. : )
