Echoing the above thoughts, Rosee. You can't be penny wise and pound foolish when it comes to being outfitted for work, and it sounds as if you've made some really practical and versatile choices. And hey: 1/4 of the way through!

Best of luck getting the new health issues under control.

Sounds like you are doing amazingly well, Rosee, considering all you have on your plate. I'm so sorry about the new health issues but really glad you will have some pretty things to wear and that you have such a very healthy attitude towards this entire process.

I was wondering how things were going on! Glad to see some pretty pieces (don't be hard on yourself SYC-wise) but I am not glad about health issues. However look at it this way - if you can help yourself with diet change, that's a massive chunk of control over your health to have. E.g. I have switched to GF diet several years ago and am actually thankful I had been given the right diagnosis and guidelines, so I can take the reins myself.

Keep checking in and in the meantime 'practice' the new diet, whatever it is for you. Big changes take time, so does weight-shifting (either way).

It sounds like you are doing great, purchasing wardrobe holes or basics. I think SYC with minor flexibility to accommodate as situations change is the key to a successful run when the SYC is long term, such as a year. You are doing great!

UPDATE: 3 months in.

I have posted on IronKurtin's SYC threads but I also felt the need to be accountable on my own thread (kind of my own personal record).

I did break SYC with several purchases during September and October, mostly wardrobe holes and basics that did need replacing, especially considering that I will be switching jobs soon. I realized I did not have enough at my current size 12 to 14 to wear to work. The pieces I bought can be tailored down a couple of sizes as needed. Happily, I regret nothing I bought.

-- grey ponte knit dress -- http://www.landsend.com/pp/34s.....038;sku_0=::WML&CM_MERCH=search-_-ponte+knit&origin=search
-- 2 casual knit skirts in grey and navy -- http://www.landsend.com/pp/Cot.....038;sku_0=::CHA&CM_MERCH=IDX_Women-_-DressesSkirts-_-Regular&origin=index
-- 3 3/4-sleeve cotton tees in white (2) and navy
-- 2 knit peasant-style blouses in red and dark plum (really loving these!)
-- pink and red peony patterned scarf from Esprit -- why not, it's really pretty!
-- silver earrings -- http://www.inpink.com/earrings.....ilver.html
-- off-white canvas espadrille wedge sandals (link no longer available) for next summer (clearance sale)
-- navy leather vintage Coach Whitney bag on ebay -- technically bought after the start of SYC but with money in the account from a previous ebay return.

All of it was on sale or discounted. Ironically, I have never shopped at Land's End this much before, but they seemed to have pieces that suit my newer, larger shape (I have had issues figuring out what to wear at this size).
I am also planning on buying a pair of tan wedge mj shoes for work (I don't really have brown dressy shoes and they would come in handy).

Weight loss wise, I have gone up and down a little, but no significant loss yet. I have discovered new health issues so now I have to formulate an eating plan to accommodate those as well. I am even more determined to lose the weight now. Realistically though, I won't be able to really implement the changes until December, so I am just trying to eat as healthy as possible in the interim, but I won't be expecting much change as I'm going through a somewhat stressful transition right now.

Organizing the closet wise, I like things to be simple and compact and I don't like having extra, so I have started getting rid of some clothes. I still plan to keep the good-enough clothes in the hopefully interim sizes so that I don't shop that much. I'm really wanting to wear my favorite styles in the smaller size so hopefully that will be a strong incentive to keep motivated and regain my lost energy.

ANALYSIS: very "off track" but not completely lost. (I tend not get lost easily in real life either so I keep reminding myself of that.) This is still doable.

Thanks again for the support ladies!

@Kari: Thanks for the links. I originally got the idea from the http://workthatwardrobe.blogspot.com/ link but I wasn't ready yet to go through with it (needed more pieces), but I lost my bookmark, so thank you for finding this one again. I also read the http://sheilaephemera.blogspot.com link to see how it worked out for her, and found that pretty interesting. It made me feel like "yeah, I'm going to do this and it will be worth it".

@Janet: a very big thank you for the offer. I currently won't fit a size 10 (more like 12, 13, 14), but I might contact you again when I get to that size (but don't feel obligated to keep it for that period of time, we'll see when the time comes). This is really a great forum with great people!

Rosee, I wish you the best on your endeavor, and I think you're doing well in setting boundaries for yourself but also giving yourself realistic flexibility as you are changing sizes.

A couple suggestions (just based on my smaller, 3 month SYC earlier):
Give yourself some small rewards along the way, too. This doesn't have to be monetary - something like pampering yourself, a bubble bath or a self-pedicure or foot soak, or something that makes you feel good - to help you get through the times when you are feeling discouraged or demotivated can be a huge help.
And don't feel like you *have* to look less than stellar during this time. Realistically, you may need to be content with being in-between sizes while you are changing shape, but I think you should deserve to feel like a 10. Push your creativity with the items you have, and see if you can fall in love with some old favorites - especially when you are able to wear items that hadn't fit for a while. But keep in mind that your style preferences may change over time, too. I'm glad that you are allowing some flexibility (thrifting) since your SYC will be lasting for such a long time.

A couple blogs of note that you may want to check out from others who went through a similar 1-year SYC, if you have not already done so:
http://sheilaephemera.blogspot.com
Sheila went through a 1 year period in 2009 with the following rules:
"I will not be buying any new clothes or shoes.
- Consignment or thrift clothes and shoes will be permitted, as will clothing acquired by swap or gifts.
- Accessories, underwear, hosiery, workout clothing will not apply.
- The "One In, One Out" rule is in effect. If a new piece of clothing or pair of shoes is acquired, an existing piece of equal "weight" (eg. a dress for a dress, a top for a top, NOT a dress for a pair of socks) will have to go."
See details on her recap post here: http://sheilaephemera.blogspot.....recap.html

Sheila is actively blogging and is incredibly sweet and responsive to comments, so in addition to skimming her blog, you might even reach out to her if you are looking for some tips based on past experience. Just an idea.

http://workthatwardrobe.blogspot.com/
Jane's endeavors started in mid-2008:
"I have a problem.
I have more cash going out of my house than coming in.
I spend all my spare cash on clothes and books.
I need to stop spending all my spare cash on clothes and books.
I will borrow all the books I need from the library.
I will wear only clothes I already own.
I will solve my problem.
To help motivate me I have started this blog.
I will post a picture of everything I wear for 365 days (including holidays which may be a challenge).
I will say what I am wearing, why I have worn what I have worn and where it came from. If possibe I will recall how long I have had the item and how much it cost. Although this may be a bit anal.
But I want to solve my problem.
I need to solve my problem."
Jane not only went through a very successful project, but it was really interesting to see how her style transformed during that period as well. The WorkThatWardrobe blog is no longer being updated, but Jane now blogs over at http://www.thesmallfabricofmylife.blogspot.com/.

I've found the experiments and style journeys of both of these women to be particularly inspirational, although there are many other similar blogs out there too, and many weight-loss blogs. From our own members, Kristen's LowFatDressing blog (on the sidebar links) really stands out as an example of how to dress very well at any size or shape.

Hi Rosee --

Just wanted to join the chorus in wishing you luck with your two (big!) goals.

While I don't have first-hand experience with health issues causing such a large weight gain/loss in such a short time, I empathize with the shock to your emotional and physical systems. Glad to hear things are more stabilized for you, and I hope you'll continue to feel better.

[I do find even 10 extra pounds increases my joint pain, so hopefully that relief will come quickly for you.]

Since you have a range of sizes in your closet now SYC may turn out to be more of an adventure than a restriction/burden...keep us posted!

Okay... 4 days in and I did make some purchases today... but I still consider it not breaking my SYC! I had discounts I was going to use up before the official start of SYC but feeling under the weather lately prevented me from going before Tuesday.

My friend give me a gift card for the mall, and I was emailed a 25% off email code for my birthday at one of my favorite stores RW&Co (Canadian), so I bought a heather taupe 3/4-sleeve top with that -- cost me 86 cents.

I did browse a little of the incoming fall stock but I decided that I can wait until next year. There were things I like but I don't feel too tempted.

I then went to Value Village (a charity thrift superstore) to use up my 30% off card (today was the last day) and bought 8 pieces: a great jacket (can't wait for fall), 3 tops, 3 skirts and lounge pants. I hope to post pics soon (but then, I say that a lot don't I?).

That'll do me for at least a few months.

Thanks again ladies!

@Kate: I do that with some of my skirts already -- "empire -waist" skirts worn under my tops. Got some belts but I'm looking for a couple more before my program begins.

@Rae: that's a great idea with the orphans. Any money that ends up in my paypal account for returns is being transferred straight to my regular account and used toward debts.

I have complete faith that you can do this, and will be cheering you on the whole way! One tip I want to add is to see if you can wear some of your smaller skirts high waisted now, and then let them move towards sitting on your hips as you lose weight. Skirts can be so much more forgiving and versatile than pants or shorts. Also, be sure you have a couple of great belts in a variety of sizes, both for your hips and waist. They can make a too large dress or tunic (or pants or skirt) look amazing!

Best of luck to you! SYC taught me many things - chief of which being that I can really generate some extra cash when motivated, lol (my rules said I could spend whatever I raised through reselling orphans). No matter what happens, I am sure you will learn a lot of useful things about your style and habits simply by being extra mindful.

Not to sound negative, cuz I truly wish you the best of luck, but if much of your weight gain was caused by medication (as was mine) and you still need to take it on a regular basis it can be pretty damn hard to shed even a few pounds Also if you switch brands/need other meds it can wreck havoc on the most strict diets. I noticed you were referring to odd number sizes (9,13) those are junior sizes and the clothes are cut for teens with little to no curves, so please consider that when shopping also!

@ChewyS: I have 2 realities to deal with right now, limited finances (as I'm not currently working in my field) and extra weight gain. I spent a lot for the first half of 2011 buying clothes that fit me now (about a size 12, sometimes 13). I hope to use clothes I already own during the weight loss. I have the least clothes in size 8 to 10, so I'll need to get some more from the thrift stores then, but I plan to be as frugal as possible in clothing choices for this program.

@krishnidoux: Thanks for the uniform idea. I had a vague idea in my head of doing that but it's good to hear (read) something concrete. Right now, I'm not working except for childcare (for my neighbors) so I wear really casual outfits -- casual pants or jeans and tees or knit tops, topped by a sweater if needed. I get messy with the kids so I don't really need to dress up. My style needs are for some evenings (when I have energy to do something) and weekends -- still fairly casual but I'd like to be more dressy casual or smart casual. I have lots of skirts, and this is when I will wear accessories like scarves, belts, my better shoes and boots, and jackets. I'm thinking the MOTG formulas for this.

I am having a terrible time finding pants to fit me (a pear shape) and so I think I will wait to purchase my pants when I am slimmer. I am however always looking out for pants and jeans when thrifting, but I have at least 3 in each size for the program.

Thanks for the support ladies! Will be needing it.

@Dasharashi: I didn't mention it this time b/c I have a few times in other threads, but MOST of my clothes are size 4 to 6 or small, medium. I have some clothes about size 8 to 10 and now I have size 12 clothes. I put on over 60 pounds pretty quickly mostly due to medication, and now that things are stabilizing health-wise, I want to lose that weight (I am really carrying too much weight on my smallish 5' 6" frame, to the point that I am in pain when I walk). So the goal is to get into my old clothes again, and not buy some of my wish-list items (like skinnies) until I am at that size again.

@DressLover: I won't go thrift shopping more than once every 2 months, and I usually spend less than $50 when I go (that is a big haul!). I am still pretty picky when thrift shopping, I tend not to buy things that I wouldn't buy at regular retail prices. But if I find great stuff and it cost me $100 bucks, I'm fine with that as it means I will spend less the next few times as I will have the things I need in my closet. I don't like owning too many things b/c I hate clutter more than I like a deal.

Rosee, I like how specific you are with outlining your goals. I think that makes them much easier to adhere to. I would watch some of the indefinite language though if you are prone to exploiting loopholes though. For example, in #3 you mention "very occasionally" which could easily be manipulated. Perhaps have a thrift budget such as $x per x pounds lost?

What a good idea!
It's a big undertaking, tackling two aspects at once, but you sound decided and motivated, good for you! You can do it, as your avatar rightly says.

My advice: You'll need to find yourself a "uniform", I mean a basic formula that you feel absolutely comfortable and put together in. Because of those days when nothing seems to work anymore, and the first instinctive response is the excruciating need to shop. Then you'll want something quickly put together so you can take your mind off it for a little while.

Also I imagine re weight loss that you will spend more time in "gear" so maybe you can find outfits that combine gear and smarter clothes for everyday wear. ex. a great boyfriend jacket that can be worn over workout gear for quick errands or in and out of gym - given of course you haven't been the sweating the life out of yourself !

Good luck!

If you're successful with the weight loss, won't all of your clothes be way too big by the time you've lost, say, 30 pounds? (Or do you have a variety of sizes/seasons in your closet?) Is there a contingency plan to end SYC early when nothing fits anymore?
