SarahD8, thanks for the photos.

Toban, I got my tall brown boots when we lived in NoVa. It was 15 years ago; I don’t think skinnies were a thing then the way they are now.

FashIntern here you go. I bought this on Amazon. I think it's meant for people who do jewelry shows etc. I was able to buy the drawer inserts separately so I could customize it to my particular mix of jewelry. I would say it works very well, but not quite clouds-parted-angels-sang well. :-)

Eta: oh that second pic got flipped upside down, sorry about that!

SarahD8, thanks for answering my question about the tall boots! I can imagine how appropriate they are in Seattle. I lived in Vancouver, BC for 20 years, but am now in the Washington DC, MD suburbs area. Very different climates! I haven't owned leggings or skinny jeans for years, but I have been considering introducing them into my fall/winter wardrobe for next year as I think they'd work quite well for our short, but cold winter.

Thank you, Katerina, madeline, Joy, Angie, JAileen, Style Fan, Sterling, Toban! You all are warming my heart and making me excited to put together outfits to share!

Joy I like the idea of naming the capsule overall. I couldn't think of one but I will keep noodling on it. Maybe "East of the Sun" after the Norwegian fairy tale. In my mind there is definitely a fairy tale element here that I'd like to play up a bit. I also think of that movie Russian Ark (that was filmed in the Hermitage museum, in one long take), although that's a bit fancier than the vibe I'm going for here.

Sterling, I like the quietness of a more neutral palette at this time of year too.

Toban, yes, I wear the tall boots with skinny jeans, ponte leggings, or skirt leggings. Very practical for my wet and chilly climate (Seattle). I also like them with skirts and dresses but have been "off" skirts and dresses for casual day wear lately. I had never in my life owned a pair of tall boots until 4 or 5 years ago. Now I have no idea how I managed without them!

FashIntern I'll take a picture of my jewelry setup later today.

Thanks for sharing your pictures and your plan. I love your visualization and the cohesiveness of your palette. It looks like you brought in color primarily in your toppers. I like the variety in your footwear capsule, with 4 tall boots. (I'm envious -- right now I don't have a single pair that fits and they are expensive to replace, so I'm waiting until next winter when I'll be at my goal weight. It's a big hole in my capsule). Do you wear the tall boots with pants and leggings?

Your capsule is so well thought out and stunning. Your first photo of the scarf is gorgeous. I love your themes as inspiration. Last year someone here named each of their seasonal capsules. I think deep winter wasAspre' Ski or something like that.
I like your idea of using all your appropriate clothing for a longer time. It gives you more options and allows you to wear and evaluate everything.

You are inspiring me to join the 30x30 challenge. The scarf additions are great. As far jewelry: inside my closet door,
I hung my earrings on a frame with netting inside of it and my big necklaces on hooks on either side. This way I can see most of my everyday wear at once.
I have a jewelry box but it contains my seldom worn dainty pieces.

Can you post a link to or simple photo of your jewelry box? Most that I’ve seen have lots of compartments for rings and earrings, and not enough for my necklaces. I could go with something like this, but it would probably look too cluttered once I loaded it up. https://www.containerstore.com.....d=11006206
I have (velvet) bags for several necklaces, which wouldn’t work with that kind of stand anyway.

My son loves baby harp seals. From what I understand, the season they are born in, Feb-March, is a good time to see the Northern Lights. I’d love to be able to take him on a trip to see them!

Elizabeth P, high-five to my extended-capsule buddy! Re: photos of jewelry/accessories, it did take a bit more time but I think the effort will pay off. I work from home, so the temptation to forgo accessories (and, for me, feel less fab) is great. I'm hoping the easy reference will encourage me. I have the photos on my phone, so I can refer to them when planning outfits (sort of like a wardrobe/outfit planning app but without as much up-front investment of time). It took about 45 minutes altogether to take the photos.

LBD, Mainelady, Emily K, and Suz, THANK YOU! Your encouragement and appreciation have made my day!

FashIntern, ahhh. What a lovely photo! Such subtlety and so many colors hidden in there. Re: jewelry storage, I have a jewelry organizer with multiple drawers and I have just rearranged them so that the pieces I've chosen for this capsule are at the front of each drawer. I can still wear other pieces but the ones I'm focusing on are most easily accessible.

The Cat, I'm glad you "get it"! What a lovely description of the northern lights. I hope to see them in person one day. Re: tops vs. toppers, I count anything I put layers over as a "top," and anything I put layers under as a "topper." I can only think of one item I own that spans both categories! I would like a few more tops, too. In the past, I have found that my outer (topper) layer contributes most to my sense of outfit variety, so I think I am unusual in that I tend to want roughly equal numbers of tops and toppers. That said, I think there's probably a bit of fat to be trimmed in this collection of sweaters!

Thanks. How fun that you choose such themes! You must have a poetic mind. By the way, as I recently saw the real nordic lights twice, I can assure you that there are many more colours than the clear green. The first time I saw them this season, they were soft pastels, including lilac and light aqua. The second time, they were bolder and deeper, including hot and deep pink, torquise and teal.

Your neutral coloured items remind me of a dark nordic winter night with moonshine, stars and glittery snow and will be a perfect background for your beautiful non-neutral colours.

Great capsule planning! However, if I was planning a capsule for such a long period, I would include 2 or 3 more tops. On the other hand, I would be fine with 5-8 toppers. (But of course, this depends on what we count as tops and toppers. For instance, I would count my round-neck pullovers as tops, not toppers, though I can and do use them both ways. Shawls (big scarves) and outerwear would also not be counted as toppers--but I would certainly need about 3 shawls (big scarves) and about 3 pieces of outerwear.)

I look forward to seeing how your Deep Winter capsule works for you.

I love how you come up with and describe your color schemes. Your discussion of this one reminds me of this picture I took back home a few years ago, even though they aren’t birch trees. The colors were so subtle that another family member (who hadn’t noticed me taking the picture) complained about the “grey” day. I hope they come through the site’s software.

I think I need a warning whenever you post a pic with those Oxfords, or else I’ll be triggered to go off and buy some, and I really don’t need them right now. Also, the scarf in #1 is amazing. I thought it was a collection of several scarves at first.

I love that you’re still wearing the jewelry. One of my take-always from my last challenge was that my jewelry needs to be stored more accessibly, but I haven’t done it yet.

Your color palette on this one (the birch forest part) is right up my alley! And I really like your pictorial scarf! I think I'm really going to get a lot of inspiration from your WIW's during this capsule challenge

My goodness, you really have thought this out. Photographing your jewellery is taking things to a whole new level, in my world :). It looks like you've put together a lovely cohesive capsule. WRT pattern, you do have some in your scarves, so maybe this will satisfy you?

I like how you've thought this out, and look forward to following your progress. I am also going until mid March, so the two of us will be buddies for the last half of this!

I am joining in the “30x30” project that many forum members are undertaking this January. Thanks again to Sterling for getting us started!

My project has a few differences from that of many other members:

I will be wearing this group of clothing for longer than 30 days. I plan to take this into early-mid March, exact end date TBD.

Therefore my capsule is larger than 30 items. (See discussion below.)

I am not building my capsule as I go but rather have assembled all the (season-appropriate) clothing that fits the color palette I had in mind. I tried to be fairly expansive with the palette, with the idea that as I wear the capsule I will see what “really” belongs.

I really liked the idea of having a kind of narrative inspiration for my holiday “Nutcracker Suite” capsule. So I am going to try to do that for my other seasonal capsules as well. This capsule is inspired by northern landscapes as in Russia and Scandinavia. Photo 1 is a picture of a scarf that is basically my inspiration for the capsule and color scheme.

I see this capsule as more casual than my holiday capsule, less colorful than some other capsules (more focused on playing with value contrast and tonal color combinations rather than strong color contrasts). Colors are primarily cool and metals are mostly silver but a bit of muted gold does creep in here and there.

As in my previous capsule I’ve divided this one into groups based on color:

Photo 2: Birch Forest. Think of bare trees, snow-covered ground, a grayscale world but one that is not lacking visual interest.

Bottoms: Black jersey dress, black merino skirt, black ponte leggings, black skirt leggings, gray skinny jeans

Tops: Black layering sweater, black knit, gray sweater tunic (this needs to be shortened), gray/white stripe popover, white blouse x3

Toppers: Black long cardi, black hip-length cardi, charcoal long cardi, gray floral sweatshirt, gray hip-length cardi, lace-print cardi, white cable-knit cardi

Photo 3: “Birch Forest” accessories.

Photo 4: Northern Lights. Hat tip to The Cat who mentioned the northern lights in the context of my previous capsule. I thought that might be a great way to tie together the more colorful component of this capsule, which includes a range of blues (mid-tone through icy aqua) and pinks (burgundy through pale rose). The scientist in me is compelled to beg you not to take this too literally — yes, I know that the most common color in auroras is a shade of yellowish green which I don’t have represented here (and isn’t a color that looks great on me to boot). Just go with the overall gestalt!

Bottoms: Navy skirt leggings (don’t really fit the color scheme but I know I’ll need them), medium-wash skinny jeans, medium-wash straight jeans

Tops: Pale aqua layering sweater, fuchsia layering sweater

Toppers: Burgundy long cardi, lavender crochet vest (I suspect this will not be warm enough for this season but am going to try it out), vintage fair-isle pullover, pale rose cardi, orchid-pink cardi, camel cardi, pale blue-gray cardi, wedge wood blue cardi, robin’s-egg cardi

Photo 5: “Northern Lights” accessories.

Photo 6: Footwear

Black tall boots, black snow boots, black ankle boots, black patent loafers

Gray tall boots

Cognac riding boots, tan heeled oxfords, tan clogs

Total numbers: 41

Bottoms - 8

Tops - 9

Toppers - 16

Shoes - 8

As in my previous capsule I notice a lack of tops!

Overall, though, I think that 40-45 items is about the right size for a 2-3 month wardrobe. I have been thinking about numbers as others have posted their capsules and here is what I have come to. In winter, many of us are wearing 4-piece outfits most days (bottom, top, topper, and shoes). Seven days’ worth of items in each category already adds up to 28! It is no wonder that 30 feels very limited at this time of year. I feel that a 30x30 could work, I would be willing to rotate through 7-ish items in each category 4 times. But longer than that, I think it would feel like a bit of a slog. To me it feels comfortable to have about a week and a half worth of options in each category. (Many people would probably feel comfortable with slightly fewer shoes and might want to shift that item “budget” to tops. But you get the general idea.) That way you are wearing most items most weeks but there is still a bit of “ease” to include items that might be valued but worn less often. Curious to know how that logic sounds to others.

A couple of other “problems” I notice right off the bat:

In my previous capsule I really enjoyed pattern mixing but there is almost no pattern here!

I think the capsule overall is tilted a bit more towards neutrals than I would prefer. I see this especially in the sparseness of the Northern Lights accessories bundle.

I may also add to or replace items in this capsule as we go. I did some shopping in the after-Christmas sales, guided in large part by insights from my previous capsule. Many of the items I have ordered will also fit in this capsule and if any of those purchases work out I plan to add them.
