I wear them for statement... I like the added benefit of warmth, but with winter temps rarely reaching freezing temps I can't say it's the top reason for wearing them... I have 6 pairs of heeled knee high boots and 5 pairs of flat riding boots. My dear husband is so supportive of my boot love. I bought 3 new pairs this season...

Confessions of a shoe/boot junkie. I long for boot season each year (no more worrying if my pedicure is up to snuff). If I waited for the weather I would rarely wear boots. I think of them as accessories in my winter looks. I have fashion ones for work (they do also keep legs warmer in freezing office temps) and gearish ones for style (since we get minimal snow most years).I do have a few pair of rain and snow boots that are strictly for weather and if worn to work I will change (probably into fashion boots) but the choices these days are so vast one can have both fashion and function at once,

I find it uncomfortable to wear tall boots all day long because they make my legs hot, and mainly wear them for bad weather, taking them off indoors. This is unfortunate because I love the way they look. I usually wear ankle boots or booties and wish I could wear them in the summer since I hate sandals.

Definitely both for me too. Lately, though, the ubiquity of the skinnies-inside-tall-boots look on the streets of New York has begun to weary me a bit. It's so practical for the weather and I certainly wear this combination a lot myself, but it's literally visible on every third woman you see.

I love boots because they solve the problem of needing real socks (not delicate nylon sheers) in winter but not liking the look of real socks with most of my shoes. If it's not knee-high boots over pants, it's ankle boots under pants, pretty much from November through April.

Knee high boots, especially over pants, are a really strong look visually, and for years they weren't in at all - I may have my dates off but what I recall is that tall boots were very in in the 70s, and then out for the 80s and most of the 90s, when docs and calf height boots started to creep back in, but mostly with skirts and dresses. The whole skinny jeans thing has made jeans under boots possible again when it really wasn't with boot cuts. So for me, who lives in a climate that requires rain boots but not snow boots, I find that tall boots don't quite fit my style - they are a little fashion-y, a little too intentional, if that makes any sense, to blend in and serve to stand out a bit more than I prefer most days. I own a couple pairs now, but mostly wear them over tights with skirts in the winter, not with pants.

Both! I wish I could tolerate boots in our summers, but from May through September it gets just too warm and humid for me to encase my feet. Like shemarie, I find it challenging to find sandals that come near the style quotient of many of my boots.

Boots fit my style persona to a T--- they are also incredibly practical and with the new job are becoming more practical for our 7 months of cold weather. My office is chilly even with pants and closed shoes most of the year, I need non-slip, warm and sturdy office shoes and then rugged comfortable non-slip warm and sturdy shoes to commute in snow and live the rest of my life in for the rest of the fall and winter.

For me it is both, but not all of my boots are suitable for rotten weather. If I didn't live in Canada but in Arizona or someplace like that I would probably still have several pair of booties, and maybe one pair of tall boots, but boots wouldn't be a fashion priority. If I lived in Seatlle or Vancouver, I'd have several rain worthy boots and booties. Living where I do, I have a variety of types and still feel the need for even more!

Another Portland-area person here. I love me some tall boots and like to wear them about 3 seasons a year. So it's sort of seasonal, but style is the main thing.

When it's really cold or messy out, I'm more apt to wear Doc Martens than boots (well, if I had Doc boots I could wear those, but at the moment I don't).

I had to laugh out loud (or else I'd cry!)...my answer has to be style, style, and only style, living in the desert southwest. If I waited for the weather to dictate them, I'd be completely devastated because I LOVE them and cannot find sandals, oxfords, ballet flats, anything that comes anywhere remotely close to my attraction to tall boots. They bookend my hair, balance out my IT-ness, allow me to wear my skinnies and tunics and sheaths, and add that little bit of "edge" I so crave. Sadly it's not even January and I'll maybe only get to wear them for another month or two. Sigh.

Both for me too! What I actually like best about my boots is that they let me comfortably wear skirts and dresses through the cold weather, which I guess is a style/weather combo. Now that I think about it, I've always liked skirts and dresses, but didn't start wearing them as my year-round default until tall boots really hit critical mass as a style option (maybe about five years ago).

It looks like you have a lovely boot collection!

Both for me also! Plus, my feet are fussy and boots are the best for them (can wear socks and orthotics in them, and no hard edges to cut up my heels and feet.)

If the weather cooperated, I'd probably wear boots year round, so yes, they are definitely a big part of my style statement.

I am actually currently annoyed because two pairs of my tall boots (both lace up pairs) are unlined not very warm at all so I can't wear them right now. But I think I may have just found my cold-weather black boots! (They are Blondos, I tried them on in a store in brown but have ordered the black.)

Times spent on Pinterest reveal a lot of knee high boots worn regularly as a part of a look or style statement. Sometimes they are worn with skinny pants, sometimes with skirts, etc. Also, I note some folks on the forum are fans.

Below are pictures of my boots. I wear the Sorels regularly for shovelling snow, or when it is just plain cold (which it is regularly here) for grocery shopping, or running errands when I'm in jeans or cords. The to-the-knee Franco Sarto leather boots get worn on the commute to and from work most days from November to May through snow and cold, but I switch to shoes at work. The over the knee (faux leather) boots get worn when I commute on public transit because they are low heeled and non slip, and keep me super warm under a skirt or dress. I sometimes wear them under a skirt all day at work. But, I NEVER wear the taller boots when there is no snow on the ground.

The short boots get worn with pants, jeans, trousers, when I'm going building-to-car, or when I don't have to schlep through snow because it has been packed or cleared. I also wear the short boots during spring and fall, when there is no snow.

All the boots are low healed. The Steve Madden Chelsea boots (3 yrs old) get the most wear. The Russell and Bromley boots are new (September) and are the only short boots worn with skirts or a dress.

I'm thinking that if it wasn't for the weather (cold and snow) I probably would not wear boots for style, other than Chelsea boots, which I like quite a bit.

Do you wear boots because of weather dictates or as a style statement? Do you find tall boots comfortable to wear (vs other styles of shoes?)
